I was using both of them prior to upgrading my hardware without any problems. I was tracking RELENG_6 previously. I've tried setting the SATA controller to AHCI and IDE mode, and it hangs in the same place either way (not unexpected, since the kernel hangs long before ever getting around to probing it). I'm running Vista and planning to dual boot the machine (I'm running Vista Ultimate and tracking RELENG_6 on my Latitude D820 with no problems currently). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Hi I got some time ago same symptoms on 7-STABLE on Abit IP35-E.. when I upgraded to latest BIOS available from ABIT, and rebuilt kernel+userland from todays CVS.. it boots allright. Also I`ve set in BIOS those options that configure Mouse and Keyboard behaviour to "OS" option (defaults to "BIOS"). Don`t hesitate to contact me if u got other problems regarding this fantastic MoBo. If not, please accept my apologies and point me to the proper forum. I recently set up a server with 6.2-RELEASE. The machine has two hot-swappable SATA drives at /dev/ad4 and /dev/ad6. Adapting the instructions I found here: http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-45047.html I enabled drive-level (as opposed to slice-level or partition-level) mirroring with gmirror using the following commands: sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=16 gmirror label -v -b round-robin gm0 /dev/ad4 sed -i .orig 's%/dev/ad4%/dev/mirror/gm0%' /etc/fstab echo geom_mirror_load="YES" >> /boot/loader.conf I then rebooted, and started building the mirror with: gmirror insert gm0 /dev/ad6 The mirroring completes, and everything is grand. Now come the questions: (1) What is the procedure for swapping out a dead drive while the system is online? (2) Say a drive dies as a result of a power event, and does not respond to probing during the subsequent boot. Once I swap out the drive, (how) can I get the system to re-probe, recognize the new drive, and start reconstruction? (3) Will the stock bootloader and kernel be able to boot from just ad6 if ad4 dies, or is ad4 special because it was the original boot drive? (Or is this a function of the BIOS?) (4) Say I have two identical machines Foo and Bar, and four identical drives A, B, C, and D. I insert drive A into machine Foo as /dev/ad4 and install 6.2-RELEASE. I then insert drive B into Foo as /dev/ad6 and mirror using the procedure described above. When mirroring completes, I shut Foo down. Can I then pull drive B out of Foo:/dev/ad6 and install it in machine Bar:/dev/ad4, install drives C and D as /dev/ad6 on both machines to act as new mirrors, and effectively clone Foo's installation onto Bar? I am an educational customer so I can get a little bit of a discount. I need a system that will act as a host for my subversion repository and as the 'lab' web server (mix of static and dynamic pages) for me and my students. I will also need to use the system to host MySQL and PostgreSQL databases for students when I teach database courses. On occasion, a little bit of number crunching (triangular mesh processing) is done but nothing too terrible. I would like at least 4GB of RAM and at least two CPU cores. My storage needs right now are modest (10 GB) but I expect this to grow by at least 1 GB per semester. Currently I'm eyeing a Sun Fire X4200 M2, HP ProLiant DL365 or a Dell 2950. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Sounds like the bge(4) driver might work. Take a look at "pciconfig -lv"=20 to identify the chip and PCI vendor id. Try adding that information to=20 src/sys/dev/bge/if_bge.c::bge_devs[] and subsequent chip revision arrays. = =20 It's easiest to build a kernel w/o device bge and loading bge from=20 modules. This way you can cd to src/sys/modules/bge and "make load;=20 #test; make unload; #change source; #repeat" until it works. =2D-=20 /"\ Best regards, | mlaier@freebsd.org \ / Max Laier | ICQ #67774661 X http://pf4freebsd.love2party.net/ | mlaier@EFnet / \ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | Against HTML Mail and News --nextPart32384406.7d5tQoNgAs Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBHaml0XyyEoT62BG0RAu6JAJ4siW1lj/psgDkefZ4N5P+2FuYTOwCdFCu/ mdJ+XPLur18lW4v8MvAF4Jg= =tBtJ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart32384406.7d5tQoNgAs-- From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 21 07:15:44 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9EAFB16A41A for ; Fri, 21 Dec 2007 07:15:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rp_freebsd@mac.com) Received: from smtpoutm.mac.com (smtpoutm.mac.com [17.148.16.66]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 90EF613C44B for ; Fri, 21 Dec 2007 07:15:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rp_freebsd@mac.com) Received: from webmail039 (webmail039-s [10.13.128.39]) by smtpoutm.mac.com (Xserve/smtpout003/MantshX 4.0) with ESMTP id lBL7FgBk011410; Thu, 20 Dec 2007 23:15:42 -0800 (PST) Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2007 23:15:42 -0800 From: Ravi Pokala To: Ivan Voras , freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Originating-IP: 70.255.1.240 Received: from [70.255.1.240] from webmail.mac.com with HTTP; Thu, 20 Dec 2007 23:15:42 -0800 Cc: Subject: Re: Questions about gmirror X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 07:15:44 -0000 > From: Ivan Voras > Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2007 20:30:37 +0100 > To: > Conversation: Questions about gmirror > Subject: Re: Questions about gmirror > > Ravi Pokala wrote: >> (1) What is the procedure for swapping out a dead drive while the system is >> online? > > If the drive and the controller support hot swapping, remove it, put a > new drive in and do: > > # atacontrol reinit channel > # gmirror forget gm0 > # gmirror insert gm0 /dev/newdrive > > Not many ATA drive+controller combinations are hot-swap-able. > >> (2) Say a drive dies as a result of a power event, and does not respond to >> probing during the subsequent boot.
