I saw similiar problems on a old computer which had almost the same amount of memory, it would run out of those things pretty quick, especially when building heavy material like MySQL etc. Please do note from a security point of view that 6.0-R is no longer being supported, please ponder upgrading to 6.2-R. The attached patch adds the device id's of the smbus controller, ata controllers and NIC of the MCP61 (amongst others). The MCP19 version of the nForce NIC appears to have the MAC address stored in the correct order. Documentation suggests that others do not need the reversal, either. According to the Linux forcedeth.c driver, there's a bit (0x0008000) in the NvRegTransmitPoll register (base + 0x10c) in the PCI configuration, but I'm afraid I don't really know how to add this in FreeBSD. The hardcoded check on the MCP19 is certainly not the one that should be used if this is added to the tree. One thing I noticed with the nve on my chipset (nForce 6600 + 405), is that using NFS over UDP results in an almost instant panic (when writing a 256MB file, only 2~3 MB is received at the remote and before the machine crashes with a register dump). NFS over TCP is rock solid. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: Patch attached with submission follows: --- ./dev/ata/ata-pci.h.orig Sat Feb 3 22:09:45 2007 +++ ./dev/ata/ata-pci.h Sat Feb 3 22:11:20 2007 @@ -211,16 +211,19 @@ #define ATA_NFORCE_CK804_S1 0x005410de #define ATA_NFORCE_CK804_S2 0x005510de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP51 0x026510de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP51_S1 0x026610de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP51_S2 0x026710de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP55 0x036e10de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP55_S1 0x037e10de #define ATA_NFORCE_MCP55_S2 0x037f10de +#define ATA_NFORCE_MCP61 0x03ec10de +#define ATA_NFORCE_MCP61_S1 0x03f610de +#define ATA_NFORCE_MCP61_S2 0x03f710de #define ATA_PROMISE_ID 0x105a #define ATA_PDC20246 0x4d33105a #define ATA_PDC20262 0x4d38105a #define ATA_PDC20263 0x0d38105a #define ATA_PDC20265 0x0d30105a #define ATA_PDC20267 0x4d30105a #define ATA_PDC20268 0x4d68105a --- ./dev/ata/ata-chipset.c.orig Sat Feb 3 22:09:56 2007 +++ ./dev/ata/ata-chipset.c Sat Feb 3 22:11:54 2007 @@ -2823,16 +2823,19 @@ { ATA_NFORCE_CK804_S1, 0, 0, NV4, ATA_SA300, "nForce CK804" }, { ATA_NFORCE_CK804_S2, 0, 0, NV4, ATA_SA300, "nForce CK804" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP51, 0, AMDNVIDIA, NVIDIA, ATA_UDMA6, "nForce MCP51" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP51_S1, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP51" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP51_S2, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP51" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP55, 0, AMDNVIDIA, NVIDIA, ATA_UDMA6, "nForce MCP55" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP55_S1, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP55" }, { ATA_NFORCE_MCP55_S2, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP55" }, + { ATA_NFORCE_MCP61, 0, AMDNVIDIA, NVIDIA, ATA_UDMA6, "nForce MCP61" }, + { ATA_NFORCE_MCP61_S1, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP61" }, + { ATA_NFORCE_MCP61_S2, 0, 0, NV4|NVQ, ATA_SA300, "nForce MCP61" }, { 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0}} ; It worked perfectly until I migrated to 6.0 - StABLE. In 6.0 - STABLE, if the FreeBSD server reboots or some client lost its connection, the respective tun still actives and the ip address still actives too. The connection isn't killed by PPPoE Server and the client can't connect again. In 4.11 the same problem doesn't exists. It's a bug of pppd or some configuration changes since 4.11? I'm using radius to restrict double login. Thanks. Frederico Boechat >How-To-Repeat: make a PPPoe connection with any client, reboots with reset button the client or the server. The client can't connect again if simultaneous-use = 1 and the server is 6.x And try it again, with FreeBSD 4.x in the server side. >Fix: I believe that if it's a bug in the 6.x version, why not use the same 4.x version of pppd? >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 7 20:33:29 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B62E216A400; Wed, 7 Feb 2007 20:33:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6844113C481; Wed, 7 Feb 2007 20:33:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2.sentex.ca [199.212.134.9]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l17KXS9H075477; Wed, 7 Feb 2007 15:33:28 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l17KXSka055158; Wed, 7 Feb 2007 15:33:28 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 8A0B773039; Wed, 7 Feb 2007 15:33:27 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20070207203328.8A0B773039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 15:33:27 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version devel-20070108, clamav-milter version devel-111206 on clamscanner1 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on i386/i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2007 20:33:29 -0000 TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:04 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:04 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for i386/i386 TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:04 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:50 - checking out the source tree TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:50 - cd /tinderbox/HEAD/i386/i386 TB --- 2007-02-07 19:28:50 - /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2007-02-07 19:36:42 - building world (CFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2007-02-07 19:36:42 - cd /src TB --- 2007-02-07 19:36:42 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Wed Feb 7 19:36:43 UTC 2007 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> World build completed on Wed Feb 7 20:29:23 UTC 2007 TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:23 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:23 - cd /src/sys/i386/conf TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:23 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:24 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:24 - cd /src TB --- 2007-02-07 20:29:24 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Wed Feb 7 20:29:24 UTC 2007 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies [...] awk -f @/tools/makeobjops.awk @/dev/mii/miibus_if.m -h rm -f .depend mkdep -f .depend -a -nostdinc -D_KERNEL -DKLD_MODULE -I- -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -I. -I@ -I@/contrib/altq -I/obj/src/sys/LINT /src/sys/modules/fxp/../../dev/fxp/if_fxp.c ===> geom (depend) ===> geom/geom_apple (depend) @ -> /src/sys machine -> /src/sys/i386/include make: don't know how to make geom_apple.c. My server is IBM System x3250 with Intel xeon 3040(1.86GHz, dual core, 64bits). I want to install FreeBSD 6.2(amd64) on the server, but the problem occurs: system hangs when "shutdown –r now" or "shutdown –p now". I also try FreeBSD 6.1(amd64), but it also hangs when reboot. I guess ACPI causes the problem, but when I reboot freebsd with acpi disabled, the problem remain existence. I try to disable all special functions in BIOS, such as "Dual Core Processor Logic", "C1 Enhanced Mode", "EIST Function", "Serial Port 1", "Planar Ethernet", "Parallel ATA", "USB Support", "USB 2.0 Support". Then I find the system can reboot and power off without enabling "USB 2.0 Support". So, I estimate BIOS supporting USB 2.0 causes the problem. Maybe FreeBSD 6.2 doesn't deal with USB 2.0 well. I hope this info is helpfull of you. We are running a sendmail mailserver , and all user mail gets written to /var/mail directory as is usual, each mailbox file with the UID of the user. We have moved the server to FreeBSD 6, and straightaway noticed much higher CPU load while accessing that directory; a simple "ls -l" command would take over 10 seconds to complete on the new server where before it took less than a second. After replicating the problem on a test server, we were able to confirm that the issue only occured when there were multiple files owned by multiple UIDs in a directory, a thousand files of the same UID would take less than a second to list. After performing tests on multiple versions of FreeBSD we have narrowed it down to some change that occured between 5.0 and 5.1 and is still present in the latest 6-BRANCH RELEASE. We created a test script that creates 1000 users and creates a file owned by each of them in one directory. An ls -l command is then performed and timed. Here are the results with both FreeBSD 5.0 and 5.1 FreeBSD-5.0 RELEASE Creating 1000 users User: 01000 Doing a ls -l in /tmp/ownership-slowdown for 1000 users took ... 0.08s real 0.03s user 0.04s sys Chowning all files in /tmp/ownership-slowdown to nobody Doing a ls -l again in /tmp/ownership-slowdown for 1000 users took ... 0.03s real 0.00s user 0.02s sys FreeBSD-5.1 RELEASE Creating 1000 users User: 01000 Doing a ls -l in /tmp/ownership-slowdown for 1000 users took ... 12.43s real 1.57s user 10.79s sys Chowning all files in /tmp/ownership-slowdown to nobody Doing a ls -l again in /tmp/ownership-slowdown for 1000 users took ... 0.03s real 0.02s user 0.00s sys >How-To-Repeat: Create multiple files owned by multiple users in a single directory. time an ls -l on this directory. The fat32 system is one logical partition, not a primary partition. My disk table is like this: windows C:\ --- BSD slice --- windows D --- windows E the windows C:\ is ad0s1, the BSD slice is ad0s3 (and the ad0s2 is the windows extened partition), the windows D:\ is ad0s5, the windows E:\ is ad0s6. Strangely, the problem does not occur with ad0s6. And in my other PC, This problem never shows up. >How-To-Repeat: mount_msdosfs /dev/ad0s5 /mnt cd /mnt mkdir 1 2 mv 1 2 doscheckpath():.. not a directory? mv: rename 1 to 2/1: Not a directory >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 10 20:10:20 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 899B216A402 for ; Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A4D213C4B2 for ; Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l1AKAKPb020369 for ; Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l1AKAK9c020368; Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 GMT Message-Id: <200702102010.l1AKAK9c020368@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Joe Vender Cc: Subject: Re: i386/98154: 6-STABLE crashes when being online via modem (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A notebook) X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Joe Vender List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 20:10:20 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/98154; it has been noted by GNATS. From: Joe Vender To: bug-followup@freebsd.org, hm-gerhards@web.de Cc: Subject: Re: i386/98154: 6-STABLE crashes when being online via modem (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A notebook) Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 14:05:05 -0600 Well, I've set the tunable as suggested, configured KPPP and am using it now. So far, no problem, but I haven't been online for long either, so time will tell if thats the problem. I came across this which states that if you are using pppd, then you need to set the tunable to 0, if I read it correctly. http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/current/2004-08/2745.html This all makes me wonder, what is the advantage to having the debug.mpsafenet set to 1 as default, anyway, if the computer only has a single processor? Shouldn't the installer be smart enough to detect if the computer is single or multiprocessor, and set the tunable accordingly, at least until ALL of the network features are made MPSAFE so that it is no longer an issue? And, when installing FreeBSD 6.2, the kernel that booted from the install CD was GENERIC, but after the installation, the bootup showed that the kernel being used was SMP. Being that my computer is a single processor, shouldn't it default to the GENERIC kernel after installation, unless I request otherwise? Thanks, Joe
