The diablo links you provided sound good, wouldn't it be a good idea to mention them on pages like http://www.freebsd.org/java/ or http://www.freebsd.org/java/install.html? The only problem is that (http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/downloads/java.shtml) seems to support only FreeBSD 5.5 and up. You may be able to install software from ports as a user (eg, non-root) by changing some critical environment settings, but I've never done it... maybe someone else can say whether it is doable at all or not ? It is a 'virtual server', so it's not shared, but they still don't give me root or sudo privileges. They maintain the core in heavily standardized way so there's no chance to upgrade to a post-4.8 FreeBSD. >You may be able to install software from ports as a user (eg, >non-root) by changing some critical environment settings, but I've >never done it... maybe someone else can say whether it is doable at >all or not ? So I tried that in desperation, but that doesn't work: pair.com> pkg_add -r linux-xorg-libs Fetching ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-4-stable/Latest/linux-xorg-libs.tgz... Done. pkg_add: read_plist: bad command '@conflicts linux-XFree86-libs' OK, so I downloaded from http://cvsweb.freebsd.org/ports/x11/xorg-libraries/xorg-libraries.tar.gz?tarball=1 and tried to make it myself: pair.com> cd xorg-libraries pair.com> make "/usr/share/mk/bsd.port.mk", line 6: Could not find /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue pair.com> make install "/usr/share/mk/bsd.port.mk", line 6: Could not find /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue pair.com> ls /usr/ports ls: ports: Permission denied pair.com> ls -l /usr | grep ports drwxr-x--- 3 root wheel 512 Jan 8 2004 ports/ And no, I have no sudo privileges so I can't read /usr/ports. So I can't tell if pkg_add actually can install anything. It seems like all it needs is xorg-libraries but as you can see pkg_add -r is unable to locate it. Can you provide me with a URL to locate this? thanks, Steve ______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System. The Diablo packages you're attempting to install won't work. They were built for FreeBSD 5.x and simply won't work on FreeBSD 4.x (no operating system can be "future compatible"). Your options are very limited on such an old version of FreeBSD. If you can manage to get a new enough version of Linux emulation working well enough you may be able to run the Linux JDK. Once you've done that you may be able to manually compile a native JDK since that version of FreeBSD is notionally supported by the latest patchset (although noone has tested it on anything older than 4.11). Not being able to use the ports system or upgrade the version of FreeBSD being used really forces you into a difficult situation for Java support. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 13 18:14:30 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CB60C16A418 for ; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 18:14:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from steve@strassmann.com) Received: from mail166.messagelabs.com (mail166.messagelabs.com [216.82.253.163]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 9D1E313C428 for ; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 18:14:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from steve@strassmann.com) X-VirusChecked: Checked X-Env-Sender: steve@strassmann.com X-Msg-Ref: server-15.tower-166.messagelabs.com!1187028864!8386364!1 X-StarScan-Version: 5.5.12.11; banners=.,-,- X-Originating-IP: [193.253.159.194] Received: (qmail 19431 invoked from network); 13 Aug 2007 18:14:29 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO altair.orange.us) (193.253.159.194) by server-15.tower-166.messagelabs.com with SMTP; 13 Aug 2007 18:14:29 -0000 Received: from manchester.strassmann.com (unknown [192.168.174.82]) by altair.orange.us (Postfix) with ESMTP id A95A91883F1; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 14:14:24 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <6.2.3.4.2.20070813140950.047528d0@qs1473.pair.com> X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 6.2.3.4 Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 14:15:01 -0400 To: Greg Lewis From: Steve Strassmann In-Reply-To: <20070813175452.GA74143@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <20070813172021.50f1440c@localhost> <20070813233051.75256cd7@localhost> <6.2.3.4.2.20070813112406.0475e3f0@qs1473.pair.com> <20070813175452.GA74143@misty.eyesbeyond.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: trouble getting and installing FreeBSD-Java (2) X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 18:14:30 -0000 >I replied to an earlier email privately. Well, apparently Pair is in the process of upgrading all its machines to FreeBSD 6.2 (http://www.pair.com/support/notices/62-upgrade.html) I'll try to ask for my own server to be accelerated on this plan. Assuming I get FreeBSD 6.2 and can use ports, do you expect the diablo ports to work? Do you know why pkg_add -r xorg-libraries didn't work? ______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System. I've been having some email problems of my own, so I think the reply is actually on another machine :(. You'll need to get Linux emulation working to start with. There are sections on doing that in the FreeBSD handbook. Basically you need it compiled into the kernel or loaded as a module (if either of these are not the case and you don't have root access and can't change the kernel then you're stuck). You'll then need to install one of the Linux emulation ports to make use of it. Look for a package starting with 'linux_base' in the 4.x package sets. If you can get a new enough version of that installed and actually working then you should be able to get the Linux JDK 1.5 installed (use the java/linux-sun-jdk15 port, for example, or take similar steps to what it does). At this point you might be done. However, despite your best efforts you may find that the Linux JDK is quite unstable on that version of FreeBSD. If thats the case, it still might be stable enough to use to compile a native JDK 1.5. Use the java/jdk15 port if you can. If that fails then read the BUILD file in the patchset you have. One of your (many) problems with that set up is that the current ports tree doesn't work on FreeBSD 4.x. In fact, most of your problems stem from FreeBSD 4.x (and 4.8 even longer ago) have been end of lifed. A much easier path (from the Java perspective) would be to get it updated to a current version (e.g. 6.2) if you can. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 13 19:39:35 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C4EB16A418 for ; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:39:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (gerbercreations.com [71.39.140.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E7A7813C457 for ; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:39:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (localhost.eyesbeyond.com [127.0.0.1]) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3) with ESMTP id l7DJdX41074713; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:39:34 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3/Submit) id l7DJdXSi074712; Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:39:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) X-Authentication-Warning: misty.eyesbeyond.com: glewis set sender to glewis@eyesbeyond.com using -f Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:39:32 -0700 From: Greg Lewis To: Steve Strassmann Message-ID: <20070813193932.GA74694@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <6.2.3.4.2.20070813142755.04751eb0@wheresmymailserver.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <6.2.3.4.2.20070813142755.04751eb0@wheresmymailserver.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.2i Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: trouble getting and installing FreeBSD-Java (2) X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:39:35 -0000 On Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:31:47PM -0400, Steve Strassmann wrote: > >Not being able to use the ports system or upgrade the version of FreeBSD > >being used really forces you into a difficult situation for Java support. > > Well, apparently Pair is in the process of upgrading all its machines > to FreeBSD 6.2 > (http://www.pair.com/support/notices/62-upgrade.html) > I'll try to ask for my own server to be accelerated on this plan. > > Assuming I get FreeBSD 6.2 and can use ports, do you expect the diablo ports > to work? In short, xorg 7.2 only came out a few months ago - non existing in 4.8. Packages are,AFAIK, only created and uploaded to ftp*.*.freebsd.org for mantained versions of the OS - 4.8 is way out of date. I wonder why Pair wont give you root access if this is a 'virtual server' == jail . B _________________________ {Beto|Norberto|Numard} Meijome "Nature doesn't care how smart you are. Thanks for the explanation. >I wonder why Pair wont give you root access if this is a 'virtual server' == jail . It is part of Pair's policy which allows them to guarantee their ability to sysadmin. You can put anything you want in your homedir and run it, but you can't mess with the Apache config or the OS. Of course I've wished for sudo privileges many times, but I can appreciate it from their point of view. I've been with them for 10+ years and have had no QoS complaints. They've agreed to migrate to FreeBSD 6.2 at any time of my choosing (for free), with a predicted downtime of about 10 minutes. Once that is done, they've offered to install JDK 1.5 + Tomcat for me for their standard $50 "make changes to the core" fee. But there the gcc version does not matter. That is, on amd64 I was already able to build jdk15, even with the 'old' gcc. Last fragment of the i386 build typescript follows. I have been pouring through the archives, and I have seen many people wit similar problems. However, I have yet to find a solution. Before anyone suggests it, I cannot upgrade the OS. I have installed the jdk15 port after much difficulty (I could not install it in /usr as there is not enough space, so I had to install it on an nfs mount). Also, I am running the JVM in jail (not sure if that makes a difference). Anyway, here is the problem (I have also attached the .log file): # # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine: # # SIGBUS (0xa) at pc=0x2824c449, pid=12534, tid=0x827c400 # # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.5.0-p1-root_14_aug_2007_20_03 mixed mode) # Problematic frame: # V [libjvm.so+0x122449] # As suggested in other posts, it seems to be a thread issue, as the application I am trying to run relies heavily on threads. It always crashes at the same spot. Any help would be very appreciated. I tried already with the gcc 4.2.1 patch from =20 (http://people.freebsd.org/~kan/contrib-gcc421.tar.gz), but the build also breaks with optimization.
