See /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ataidle.sh for sample rc.conf settings to run ataidle on disk/s at boot. I'm now using 'ataidle -P 0 0 0' which disables APM altogether on ad0, after finding I'd used up 25% of my nominal lifetime allowance of ~2M Load_Cycle_Counts in just under a year powered up over about 18 months, so I was very glad to find out about this. (Fujitsu MHV2040AH) You'll need to run ataidle again in /etc/rc.resume if you're suspending your laptop. You could even run different settings on battery or AC .. I manage several remote boxes on verizon and sprint EVDO networks, and haven't really been able to get beyond 50 kbytes/s, but thats been ok for my needs so I haven't pressed it. You can modify the baud rate and I believe the real secret is in the modem initialization string where you should be able to modify the internal settings...which may be different for every model. Hope that helps, good luck. Robert Campbell PS. Be careful about using more than 5GB per month, at least Verizon will bring the hammer down, currently. I have a T61 with Core 2 Duo T7300 Widescreen with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140 running fine with RELENG_7. I specifically ordered mine with the Atheros-based MiniPCI card so wireless worked out of the box with the ath driver. Bluetooth works (BCM2045B), just need to add ubtbcmfw_load="YES" to loader.conf. Running Xorg 7.3 at 1680x1050 using nvidia driver from nvnews.net. Have not yet tested built-in firewire (fwohci) and LAN (em) ports but assuming they work since they are detected by the kernel. The only thing that doesn't work is the SD/MMC card reader (Ricoh chipset) but there was recently some noise in freebsd-mobile@ I think so it looks to be a work in progress. Mine also came with built-in WUSB but afaik there's no support for it yet. I get about 2 hours on the standard battery and have not played around with power settings just yet. You can load acpi_ibm for some additional knobs, have not looked into very much so not sure what you can do with that. > Also, anyone have any experience getting a Windows refund after > buying one of these? I guess it's not visible to the API > when the driver is attached or some such. I got an Option Globesurfer iCON 7.2 last week. I tried the similar usb_modeswitch program: http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/ I found out that the driver detach is not needed on FreeBSD, so I just ifdef:ed out that part of the code (including both *_np calls - see attached patch). It however seems that the ugen driver has to be attached to the device for libusb to find it. No driver or the umass driver results in the device not being found. I am working on another variant which uses the method for finding the device Rui Paulo wrote in his reply to your mail to make the program independent of loaded drivers. Then you need to add the vendor/product id:s to ubsa.c and usbdevs (second patch - apply in /usr/src/sys/dev/usb & make all install in /usr/src/sys/modules/{usb,ubsa}, or rebuild kernel if you have it built-in).
