I experienced the same problems under pixman 0.9.5, and found that they are fixed in 0.9.6. FreeBSD has since updated the related port to match the new version. In my case, evince and swfdec were causing the crashing pretty reliably. I originally attributed the problem to swfdec, but after some GDBing, I found that it was happening in pixman. You can boot with the serial console as the "primary" console and then launch Xorg -configure (generally using keyboard/ screen as "secondary" console is a supported configuration). If the reboot involves a panic you can easily log it and get a backtrace via the serial console. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: x11-fonts/XFree86-4-font100dpi description: XFree86-4 I have a couple of systems that use these cards as secondary displays in multihead configurations because they just worked. I would be more than happy to do some testing (may need a little hand holding). I am not subscribed to the list, so please cc me. I realize that support for these cards will not last forever, so I would be interested in hearing what AGP/PCI combinations people are using for their multihead configuration. -- Paul Boehmer From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 15 17:11:56 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8345516A4F8 for ; Thu, 15 Nov 2007 17:11:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fbsd@opal.com) Received: from smtp.vzavenue.net (smtp.vzavenue.net [66.171.59.140]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C05513C469 for ; Thu, 15 Nov 2007 17:11:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fbsd@opal.com) Received: from 98.79.171.66.subscriber.vzavenue.net (HELO homobox.opal.com) ([66.171.79.98]) by smtp.vzavenue.net with ESMTP; 15 Nov 2007 12:11:55 -0500 X-REPUTATION: None X-REMOTE-IP: 66.171.79.98 X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Filtered: true X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Result: Ah4FACMCPEdCq09i/2dsb2JhbACBXA X-IronPort-AV: i="4.21,421,1188792000"; d="asc'?scan'208"; a="170534531:sNHT22651497" Received: from linwhf.opal.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by homobox.opal.com (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id lAFHBrBe048151 for ; Thu, 15 Nov 2007 12:11:54 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from fbsd@opal.com) Received: from linwhf.opal.com ([192.168.3.65] helo=linwhf.opal.com) by ASSP-nospam; 15 Nov 2007 12:11:53 -0500 Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2007 12:11:49 -0500 From: "J.R. The pixel corruption consists of collections of lit pixels where there are no characters and, occasionally, also unlit pixels where there are characters. These corrupted areas scroll with the xterm. The corruption happens only on wide xterms, seemingly when columns >=3D 158, which is often the case for me as I use a 1600x1200 display and an xterm font size that can fit up to 175 columns in a maximized xterm window. It also seems to happen only at the left of the screen. An example of the corruption can be seen here: http://opal.com/jr/xterm-corruption.gif I have marked the corruption using red ovals. There are many red ovals! (NB: download and view this at full size to avoid further distortion due to your browser shrinking the image.) Is there a known solution for this? I experienced the same problems under pixman 0.9.5, and found that they are fixed in 0.9.6. FreeBSD has since updated the related port to match the new version. In my case, evince and swfdec were causing the crashing pretty reliably. I originally attributed the problem to swfdec, but after some GDBing, I found that it was happening in pixman. PR: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=117854 -- Coleman Kane Hi there, I've checked what I'm using and it is: pkg_info | grep pixman pixman-0.9.6 Low-level pixel manipulation library So I'm already using this version while experiencing those problems. I'm so glad I removed everything because now my workstation is stable again and that's a huge relief for me. Brgds Dino --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Finally had a chance to test the next part of this, and it turns out that the problem is with the new nvidia driver. If I roll back to 100.14.11 then all is well. My problem is, that the card does only 1152x768 when I start X. I can change to my desired resolution 1280x1024 with xrandr, but I don't think that this is the right way. I've put a Matrox G550 and a ATI Radeon 9250 into my system and both card showed exactly the same behavior. I've read that other people are expiriencing exactly the same problem and I'm wondering, if there is already a solution for that. Oddly enough, that's the one thing that worked just right here with xorg 7.3. My 1280x1024 monitor comes up in that mode. > My xorg.conf: > http://ihsan.dogan.ch/files/Xorg-7.3/xorg.conf That's an old-style xorg.conf, but both the mga and radeon drivers are xrandr-1.2. Some of the changes needing to be made are described here: http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 Note particularly the suggestions on removing HorizSync, VertRefresh, and ModeLines from the Monitor section. For a single monitor, I'd set the virtual screen size to the same size as the monitor: Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" SubSection "Display" Virtual 1280 1024 EndSubSection EndSection One thing that may have helped me is that I went through the logs and removed everything unnecessary or duplicated from my xorg.conf: http://www.wonkity.com/%7ewblock/mgapatch/xorg.conf A single monitor setup would not have that Option "Position" "1024 0" entry in the Monitor section. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA
