Something wrong with hardware? This is an ECC memory correction. It is OK to see it once in a while, since even 100% working DRAM has failures from time to time (called softerror rate) - therefor the need to have ECC in important systems If however you see a lot of them it is time to replace the faulty memory. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 7 15:40:33 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DBF216A473 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:40:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mexas@bristol.ac.uk) Received: from diri.bris.ac.uk (diri.bris.ac.uk [137.222.10.112]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 034D913C448 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:40:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mexas@bristol.ac.uk) Received: from seis.bris.ac.uk ([137.222.10.93]) by diri.bris.ac.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.67) (envelope-from ) id 1JN8rR-0002Nb-PJ; Thu, 07 Feb 2008 15:40:31 +0000 Received: from mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk ([137.222.184.33]) by seis.bris.ac.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.67) (envelope-from ) id 1JN8rQ-000246-Uy; Thu, 07 Feb 2008 15:40:25 +0000 Received: from mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m17FeOLu009716; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:40:24 GMT (envelope-from mexas@bristol.ac.uk) Received: (from mexas@localhost) by mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk (8.14.2/8.14.2/Submit) id m17FeOHG009715; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:40:24 GMT (envelope-from mexas@bristol.ac.uk) X-Authentication-Warning: mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk: mexas set sender to mexas@bristol.ac.uk using -f Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2008 15:40:24 +0000 From: Anton Shterenlikht To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20080207154024.GA9605@mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk> Mail-Followup-To: ticso@cicely.de, freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org References: <20080206121738.GA91825@mech-aslap33.men.bris.ac.uk> <20080207145311.GF24583@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20080207145311.GF24583@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.3i X-Spam-Score: -1.4 X-Spam-Level: - Cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: DS10L - "processor correctable error" X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2008 15:40:33 -0000 On Thu, Feb 07, 2008 at 03:53:12PM +0100, Bernd Walter wrote: > On Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 12:17:38PM +0000, Anton Shterenlikht wrote: > > > > "Warning: received processor correctable error." > > > > What is the meaning of this warning? Unfortunately not. IIRC Tru64 and VMS have support for this, but we never had enough information to handle this and this is board specific as well. > If I run SRM memexer I get: > > >>>show_status > ID Program Device Pass Hard/Soft Bytes Written Bytes Read > -------- ------------ ------------ ------ --------- ------------- ------------- > 00000001 idle system 0 0 0 0 0 > 000003ab memtest memory 6 0 0 5586812928 5586812928 > >>> > Processor correctable error through vector 630. > > Machine Check Logout Frame @ 0x6000 Code = 0x86 > > Alpha 21264 IPRs (CPU 0): > I_STAT: 0000000000000000 DC_STAT: 000000000000000C > C_ADDR: 00000000296287C0 DC1_SYNDROME: 0000000000000000 > DC0_SYNDROME: 000000000000008F C_STAT: 0000000000000003 > C_STS: 000000000000000A MM_STAT: 0000000000000000 > > >>> > > The message appears approx. once every other pass. > The address is always the same. Don't be worried too much about this. Alphas are using the memory in pairs and can correct multiple faulty bits in a single dataword. However - you could try to remove and reconnect the Modules, since it can happen that a contact isn't good after that many years. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 7 17:55:30 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF2ED16A419 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 17:55:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@sopwith.solgatos.com) Received: from schitzo.solgatos.com (pool-96-225-216-68.ptldor.fios.verizon.net [96.225.216.68]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92CFD13C45A for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 17:55:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@sopwith.solgatos.com) Received: from schitzo.solgatos.com (localhost.home.localnet [127.0.0.1]) by schitzo.solgatos.com (8.14.1/8.13.8) with ESMTP id m17HtTb9014298 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 09:55:29 -0800 Received: from sopwith.solgatos.com (uucp@localhost) by schitzo.solgatos.com (8.14.1/8.13.4/Submit) with UUCP id m17HtTK3014295 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 09:55:29 -0800 Received: from localhost by sopwith.solgatos.com (8.8.8/6.24) id RAA13888; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 17:52:54 GMT Message-Id: <200802071752.RAA13888@sopwith.solgatos.com> To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 07 Feb 2008 17:21:21 +0100." <20080207162120.GG24583@cicely12.cicely.de> Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2008 09:52:54 +0000 From: Dieter Subject: Re: DS10L - "processor correctable error" X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2008 17:55:30 -0000 > > > > "Warning: received processor correctable error." > > > This is an ECC memory correction. > > Can I know which DIMM (DS10L has 2 DIMMs) is faulty? > > The message appears approx. once every other pass. > > The address is always the same. If you decide to replace one, you could pick one at random and see if the error goes away. Since your error is repeatable you can run the test to see if you guessed right. Since there are only 2 DIMMs you have a 50% chance of guessing right the 1st time and 100% the 2nd time. > Alphas are using the memory in pairs and can correct multiple faulty > bits in a single dataword. I've always assumed that it was the standard single error > correction double error detection. It uses at least 128bit words - some alphas even uses 256 bit words. so there are 16 or even 32 bits for ECC and this allows correcting more than just a single bit. (some?) Alphas use a multi stage correction mechanism. The first stage is done in hardware and if the hardware fails to handle it, it is done in software by a palcode handler. Maybe even some non alpha systems do multi bit correction, since a modern i386/amd64 has at least 8bit for ECC, but I only know it for sure with alphas. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de
