Quite upsetting as I have always run FreeBSD but not the 64 bit version and its a bit too late to do an OS reload of 32 bit version. Can anyone help me to get MS frontpage extensions to install on this version of FreeBSD? The latest extensions are fp50.freebsd.tar.gz which can be found on most any google search. I did notice someone claim that it works on apache 1.3 only and that does not work with 64-bit OS. I am not sure if this statement is a fact or if they just could not get it working on a 64 bit OS. Anyone succeed with this install? Thanks, David ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. To simplify the install of the MS Frontpage Extensions, use theses retired ports from the ports CVS repository: www/frontpage www/mod_frontpage-rtr www/mod_frontpage2-rtr You'll need to use a date before 2006.12.12.16.38.12 which is when they were retired. I'd greatly appreciate > any detailed instructions. David- I'm sure I don't have all the right answers here, but I'm going to take a whack at this. I'm not sure how you did your upgrade, but I'm guessing it was a binary upgrade? Based on that error message I'm guessing you didn't install the 32-bit binary compatibility layer or the compat4x port. You might also consider recompiling your binary on your new system, but I'm not sure how easy that'll be. I'm assuming this was something in the ports collection that no longer exists? Where did the chgquota program originally come from? Just an FYI- It's generally a good idea when you do major version upgrades to rebuild all your ports, but this is not without potential pitfalls as you might not get the same options for your compiles. "portupgrade" can be an invaluable tool for this purpose. Anyway, I hope this helps some. I would be curious what happens with a newer snap (such as 6.3) and for a verbose dmesg from a boot with APIC enabled. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 26 22:40:17 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E3EC1065675 for ; Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:40:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulf@free.fr) Received: from smtp19.orange.fr (smtp19.orange.fr [80.12.242.17]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BC1A13C4CE for ; Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:40:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulf@free.fr) Received: from smtp19.orange.fr (mwinf1911 [172.22.129.39]) by mwinf1915.orange.fr (SMTP Server) with ESMTP id 7C4A45C11FAB for ; Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:46:12 +0100 (CET) Received: from me-wanadoo.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mwinf1911.orange.fr (SMTP Server) with ESMTP id 62C861C00055 for ; Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:46:11 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.0.15] (AGrenoble-152-1-68-10.w83-201.abo.wanadoo.fr [83.201.211.10]) by mwinf1911.orange.fr (SMTP Server) with ESMTP id 36E281C00042 for ; Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:46:11 +0100 (CET) X-ME-UUID: 20080226214611224.36E281C00042@mwinf1911.orange.fr Message-ID: <47C48A4C.8040102@free.fr> Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:53:16 +0100 From: Paul Floyd User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; SunOS i86pc; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20070606 X-Accept-Language: cy, en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: "freebsd-amd64" X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:40:17 -0000 Gerardo Meza wrote: > Friends, I need to install FreeBSD on an HP xw9400 workstation models, AMD64 opteron processor 2216, I downloaded version 6.3, I tried but I get the following message: > > can't load 'kernel' > OK > Can you to help me, please? There seems to be a problem with the boot code, concerning the 'SMAP info'. This hangs the boot process. I've been following the subject for about 5 months now, and nobody seems to be doing anything. Two apps which I feel will need this help are MS Frontpage extensions fp50. & Miva Empressa engine (mivavm which is compiled for 32 bit). After doing some reasarch, I found the following possibility although I could find no specific documentation what-so-ever. 1. cd /usr/src 2. make build32 3. make install32 4. ldconfig -32 /usr/lib32 My concern is whether this procedure overwrites any current libraries on the FreeBSD 6.2 64 bit system or attempts to change anything drastically (such as convert the system back to a 32 bit OS). Also, does this install modify the kernel? Does anyone have a better / safer idea on getting 32 bit apps to run under FreeBSD 6.2 amd 64? I do not have an extra system to test this on and was planning on installing it on a production live server. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Slightly harsh - it's been fully investigated and the cause of the problem found. From John Baldwin's email: "So the SMAP problem is that in the one BIOS I looked at, the SMAP BIOS call only works from real mode. Even if invoked from virtual 86 mode, the BIOS call fails. FreeBSD only calls the BIOS SMAP call from virtual 86 mode both in the loader and in the i386 kernel. The fix is quite complicated and involves rewriting the boot code to invoke BIOS calls from real mode rather than virtual 86 mode." -pete. Forgive me if this has already been asked, but I'm in the process of trying to teach myself some of the basics for the loader and boot, etc... on the powerpc port. I realize that this is platform specific and probably has zero bearing on anything I code specifically (since I'll have firmware to doodle with, not BIOS), BUT, from a general knowledge perspective, what advantages does virtual 86 mode have over real mode? Essentially, why did the FreeBSD project choose the virtual implementation? More portable? Easier to write? None of the above? Switching between protected mode and real mode requires a reasonable degree of voodoo which does not currently exist in the kernel (the loader handles the initial real to protected transition and the kernel then never leaves protected mode). Plus you need to either ensure that exceptions/interrupts won't occur or handle them in real mode. OTOH, virtual86 mode is part of the hardware - you create a task descriptor and set the VM86 bit. Any exceptions etc are delivered to the kernel. --=20 Peter Jeremy Please excuse any delays as the result of my ISP's inability to implement an MTA that is either RFC2821-compliant or matches their claimed behaviour. --k1BdFSKqAqVdu8k/ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHxa/C/opHv/APuIcRAgUeAKCTVGSNOk0mTV6OpXPdRpkg8BOVqgCfcR3q SmeCq7J+0bGmjJ8EuWiITWg= =dowN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --k1BdFSKqAqVdu8k/-- From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 27 20:44:17 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C66B01065671; All new hardware is shipped with DVD-players these days and the old stuff with CD players is becoming rather uncommon. //Lars Mani A skrev: > I tried to install FreeBSD-7.0 AMD 64-bit, everything went fine, > but is it wrong to select packages during install ? > The installer installed from CD-1, then asked for CD-2, then for CD-1.... > .... then CD-3 then CD-1... > I thought it would be better to get some advice. > > Best > > A.
