The issue is, the *only* comprehensive book on the design and the implementation of the FreeBSD kernel is published on Aug 2, 2004 covering then FreeBSD 5.2, and now nearly four years gone and the FreeBSD is evolved to 7.0/8.0. Since now it is understood the book does not represent accurately the latest development of the FreeBSD, what is now required is an addendum to the book either on online or otherwise. I would like to propose to the FreeBSD community to get such an addendum developed by Dr. Marshall Kirk McKusick. What we need is a sponsor to cover the costs. The FreeBSD foundation raised over USD 400,000/- for year 2007. Possibly FreeBSD foundation could come to help or FreeBSD foundation could help to find another sponsor. Any other thoughts or ideas? Kind regards Unga PS: Very sorry for posting to multiple mailing lists, I even learned empirically following the post is not easy when posts to multiple mailing lists. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Specific questions about using FreeBSD should be addressed to questions@, hence I've cc'd this reply there. Another couple of points; if you're using the digest, snip the previous stuff, we've seen it already. Also set an appropriate subject field for your question. As for your question, I think you are trying to configure your system from KDE or Gnome and there's probably some sort of permissions problem that I'm not familiar with since I don't use either. Or are you running X as root? If so, don't, run it as an ordinary user and su to root after you've started X. Try configuring your network etc. as root from the console following the instructions in the handbook. If that doesn't work then your security level is probably set to something inappropriate and you'll need to change it. Look at the manpage security(7). -- Frank Contact info: http://www.shute.org.uk/misc/contact.html From owner-freebsd-chat@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 31 23:29:00 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C1821065670 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2008 23:29:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from raven@apriliaforum.net) Received: from smtprelay11.ispgateway.de (smtprelay11.ispgateway.de [80.67.29.28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E8E3B8FC18 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2008 23:28:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from raven@apriliaforum.net) Received: from [91.18.97.56] (helo=Toy.Firlefanz.org) by smtprelay11.ispgateway.de with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.68) (envelope-from ) id 1JgTFk-00035G-6C for freebsd-chat@freebsd.org; Tue, 01 Apr 2008 01:17:24 +0200 Message-ID: <47F170FF.9060000@apriliaforum.net> Date: Tue, 01 Apr 2008 01:17:19 +0200 From: Raven User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 (X11/20080316) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Df-Sender: 501592 Subject: Gamepads X-BeenThere: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Non technical items related to the community List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 23:29:00 -0000 This is old news, but I searched like mad, and couldn't find anything on the web. Maybe some of you once have the same problem. I wanted to play a game under Wine, but it was nearly unplayable with the keyb controls. So I plugged in an USB gamepad . . . it didn't work. Time to hit the wonderful world of Google . . . As always, the combination of Wine + "Insert_topic_here" yielded nothing but "Linux - mainly Ubuntu" stuff. There are enough threads, but none that helps. Seems like Linux has /dev/input/js, I wonder if this is neccessary . . . The Wine wiki mentions a DirectInput registry key . . . Linux only. We have USB keyboards and mice, we should have a gamepad, me thinks . . . Lemme see, $ cat /dev/uhid1 . . nothing $ cat /dev/uhid2 . . there it is ! Me presses buttons, jerks sticks - terminal responds with weird output. Good ! Uh-huh, what about the joystick driver in ../xorg/modules/input ? $ man joystick There - everything is documented in all it's glory. $ sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf :snip Section "ServerLayout" .. InputDevice "Gamepad" .. .. Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Gamepad" Driver "joystick" Option "Device" "/dev/uhid2" Option "Buttons" "16" Option "many_more" EndSection :snap Guess what - it worked. This gave me some confidence. The slow update/repository server was an ache though; taking almost a day or two to fully update my system. For the update speed alone, I decided DesktopBSD would not do, and that I'd better now pluck up the courage to install v.6.2_RELEASE ... A false start later (messed up the Network Config), I got a working install of FreeBSD up and running - hip hip hooray! :) I've decided there is no use punishing myself so I have decided to put on a desktop - Gnome. I started this download/compile/install like about 24 hours ago, and it's still going strong. Now I understand the difference between precompiled packages and building from source, even if only in terms of the time & resource constraints! :( Anyway, it feels good to have my first 'matrix-like' computer screen, when the computer is actually doing something other than display a screen saver!! Fingers crossed I'll get a clean boot of Gnome within less than another few hours, and then I can take a peek at pf, and other gizmos, etc, hopefully, without taking too much of a lesson in CLI, first! NB: nice to notice there is some Linux/BSD overlap in terms of apps etc; a lot more than I'd realised! ;) Best, PP ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock. Take a look into a MySQL changelog, for instance, and tell me how MySQL under debian can be more stable than MySQL in any other linux distribution. It's plain impossible. The debian folks are patching their MySQL release (the one associated with the debian release), but in the end, they can't do anything about MySQL bugs. And yes, I know, it's time to move on to Etch (or maybe to Ubuntu LTS). My fact was: No Apache 2.2 in Sarge. That's it. Nothing wrong there. And if I disagree with their policy of having fixed versions of their software, it's up to me to say that. That's still no bashing.
