For starters: Overview HAL is a Hardware Abstraction Layer that attempts to "Make Hardware Just Work." http://www.ometer.com/hardware.html PolicyKit is a framework for defining policy for HAL. D-Bus is a message bus system that allows applications to communicate with each other. Enabling (in rc.conf) dbus_enable="YES" hald_enable="YES" polkitd_enable="YES" Basic Configuration adding a user to the operator group how to enable/disable automounting of removable media changing mount options for removable media /usr/ports/sysutils/hal-device-manager More Information http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/dbus http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal ...and that's pretty much everything I know about it, so someone else would have to expand on this. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 13 05:30:01 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A63D1065671 for ; I already have the Lucas book and it's actually a really good one .. Besides that, I also contemplated the idea of the "the print on demand places to get a cheap bound copy of the current online handbook" as a viable solution. But to be honest, I just wanted to be sure there was no FreeBSD Handbook 4th edition just around the corner before proceeding to the "cheap bound" solution. I was hoping that maybe there was a 4th edition on the way (near ahead) ... so I could hold my breath until it was out .. buy it and contribute with the FreeBSD project/foundation by doing so (something like buying 7.1 along with FreeBSD Handbook 4th tomes I and II) =) Thanks a lot for the answers ! And if there ever is a 4th edition on the way, please let it be known in advanced in here .. I think quite a few would hold their breaths too =) Blessings --- Gonzalo Nemmi On Saturday 12 April 2008 20:16:21 Glen Barber wrote: > On top of whatever 'real' answer you are provided here, may I suggest > taking a look at 'Absolute FreeBSD: 2nd Edition' by Michael W. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. It was very helpful reference when I installed Mathematica 6 on FB 6.2 & 6.3. But it doesn't work for FB 7.0 now. It seems that the difference between FB 7.0 FB 6.x makes the article out of date. I have no solution and hope very much that someone would fix it. We use to not commit changes to the content at the same time as changes to the layout. These changes must be done in 2 separated patches, well most of time we don't do the formatting changes or only when the file starts to be a mess.
