Cheese is a small GNOME app that drives webcams to take pictures and videos using gstreamer's video4linux plug-in. If you're familiar with MacOS's Photobooth, it's a lot like that. However, it won't work on FreeBSD as it stands now. The reason is we lack webcam support in our hal port. I do not have a webcam, so I have no idea how these devices look. If anyone out there has a webcam that works with FreeBSD, how do you use it? How is it identified as a webcam by the OS? What device node does it use? What applications currently work with it? If we do not have any GNOME webcam users, then cheese will not be part of our GNOME 2.22 port. I have RELENG_7 FreeBSD + recent Gnome from ports tree. Burning CDs is ok with both nautilus and burncd utility. But wen I've going to burn DVD I've had a problem - scenario was - loading atapicam (my favorite growisofs from sysutils/dvd +rw-tools does not support acd driver) At that point I had two cdrom devices /dev/acd0 and /dev/cd0. Then I've started to burn some data with growisofs (on /dev/cd0 + /dev/pass0) after burning some percents hald (or whatever) detects new disk in drive !!! and then tried to mount it. This leads to write failure by growisofs. Only solution I've found - is to stop hald before burning, but it looks ugly for me. Any other ideas ? -- Vladimir B. With the newest GNOME on FreeBSD (2.20) has anyone had luck using the GNOME cups clients to add/configure CUPS printers? My attempts all fail. I checked out the FAQs and browsed through this list but can't find anything relevant. It might have something to do with the authentication to root when I run it as a normal user: GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. Despite the message, the 'gnome-cups-add' interface proceeds to show the proper dialogs and everything seems normal - till the end - the printer is NOT added, and the error message is: ** (gnome-cups-add:20755): WARNING **: IPP request failed with status 1028 I researched that message, and got lots of hits, but nothing fits. It could be a bug upstream, and if so - I just want to know that. Using the web-based CUPS interface to add/configure/etc printers works fine, even without "root" access, so this is how I've isolated it to the GNOME CUPS clients. Thanks for any pointers. This error is harmless, you get that because your GTK app is running as in root. You will see a lot of that if you search in google. I never knew how > gnome-cups-(manager|add) are doing on FreeBSD with printer. Funny you should mention that. Samba is actually the source of my problem, and I tracked it down in the CUPS log in /var/log/cups/error_log: CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer client-error-not-possible: Bad device-uri "smb://MYDOMAIN\yhassan:mypasswd@PKFILE1/ENG_HP4000"! The reason it fails is because of the invalid characters, it seems. Still haven't figured out which but it's probably the '\'. Problem is, I know of no other way to pass domain information in the SMB uri. *This* URI does work in terms of not crapping out in gnome-cups-manager: "smb://PKFILE1/ENG_HP4000" However, I have to pass the domain information to get authenticated at work. I wonder if this URI-handling error is an upstream issue - it wouldn't make sense if it were just FreeBSD. So I mean to ask: how did you get your SMB printers installed into CUPS with GNOME's CUPS manager? With a simple URI as above, or do you know to send domain info in a more friendly way? ;) > > GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: > > Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols > > specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. > > This error is harmless, you get that because your GTK app is running as in > root. As for the domain, 'DOMAIN\username' is a correct way to do it. I can check in Ubuntu's packages again and see if I have missed patches or something else. The gnome-cups-manager port is based on all of patches from Ubuntu's packages. Or I just can poke around in WindowsXP and test to see if it works for me or not for your problem. This seems to be due to a miscompilation or mislinkage problem causing two nsObsoleteAString::sCanonicalVTable and two nsObsoleteACString::sCanonicalVTable symbols shadowing each-other respectively. To me this smells a a least bit like "you get what you asked for" though; I'm surprised their string code actually works somewhere. See the attachement for a patch that works around the problem by omitting the code in question. Dear gnome@ maintainers, could you please commit the attached patch and bump the PORTREVISIONs of the affected ports (the problem also affects at least www/firefox) or approve committing such a change?
