I finally got to opening a DVD I received for New Year and wanted to back it up before watching. I mounted the disk: /dev/acd0 on /cdrom (cd9660, local, read-only) and I can list the contents: env LANG=C ls -l /cdrom/ total 8 dr-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2048 Oct 6 2005 audio_ts dr-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2048 Oct 6 2005 jacket_p dr-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 4096 Oct 6 2005 video_ts But when I try to copy all that to a hard-drive, I get a ton of read-errors -- most of the many files on the disk are unreadable: ... g_vfs_done():acd0[READ(offset=4623824896, length=65536)]error = 5 acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG ILLEGAL REQUEST asc=0x6f ascq=0x04 g_vfs_done():acd0[READ(offset=4623828992, length=65536)]error = 5 acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG ILLEGAL REQUEST asc=0x6f ascq=0x04 ... ``dd'' refuses to read from /dev/acd0: dd: /dev/acd0: Invalid argument cat tries to, but fails: cat: stdin: Input/output error Is there a step I'm missing? It may be necessary to set the drive's region code to match the disc's before it allows you to read the track keys. There's an ioctl for that... First, for the archives, debug.psm.loglevel tunable is much more useful than a verbose boot for debugging PS/2 mouse issues. A good value is 2. Second, I fiddled with various probe methods to force them to "recognize" my mouse (by loosening their checks) and found out that the mouse works perfectly if it is treated as "IntelliMouse Explorer" (MOUSE_MODEL_EXPLORER). In this case everything is perfect: all buttons work, the wheel works, movements are correctly reported, no spurious packets. Tested both in console and in X. The trick was to change enable_msexplorer() so that in addition to aux id PSM_EXPLORER_ID=4 it also accepts PSM_MOUSE_ID=0. I am not sure if this is a too permissive check that could break things for other mice. Just in case: when I attempted to "hack" enable_groller() and enable_gmouse() I noticed that status returned by mouse_id_proc1() for this mouse was 0x00 0x03 0x64, or in other words status[1]=0x3 (note: integer), status[2]='d' (note: char). I see that Linux driver and FreeBSD driver are (mostly) equivalent in "IntelliMouse Explorer" detection. I wonder if Linux handles this mouse well, and if yes, then how. on 25/01/2008 14:35 Andriy Gapon said the following: > I've recently got a cheap PS/2 mouse A4 Tech OP-3D: > http://www.a4tech.com/EN/product2.asp?CID=114&SCID=115&MNO=OP-3D > > It looks like your regular mouse with a combined > middle-button/scroll-wheel. I compared FreeBSD and Linux sources more thoroughly and found the following: http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.24/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse-base.c#L464 static int im_explorer_detect(struct psmouse *psmouse, int set_properties) { struct ps2dev *ps2dev = &psmouse->ps2dev; unsigned char param[2]; intellimouse_detect(psmouse, 0); I.e., first thing the explorer probe does is massaging a mouse with IntelliMouse magic commands. I did the same in FreeBSD psm.c, i.e., added a call to enable_msintelli() at the very start of enable_msexplorer(). And voilą - everything is perfect, correct ID is returned, probing succeeds, the mouse works great. I think that this change is quite safe to make in FreeBSD, because with Linux user-base we can be 99% percent sure that this change won't break anything. >> on 25/01/2008 14:35 Andriy Gapon said the following: >>> I've recently got a cheap PS/2 mouse A4 Tech OP-3D: >>> http://www.a4tech.com/EN/product2.asp?CID=114&SCID=115&MNO=OP-3D >>> >>> It looks like your regular mouse with a combined >>> middle-button/scroll-wheel. It is even correct: A mouse isn't required to be able to jump straight into the Explorer mode, it is supposed to always go through the IntelliMouse mode. -- Vojtech Pavlik Director SuSE Labs From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 1 10:56:51 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AED7016A417; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 10:56:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from avg@icyb.net.ua) Received: from falcon.cybervisiontech.com (falcon.cybervisiontech.com [217.20.163.9]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 637A513C45D; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 10:56:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from avg@icyb.net.ua) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by falcon.cybervisiontech.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBA5F43E49F; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 12:56:49 +0200 (EET) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at falcon.cybervisiontech.com Received: from falcon.cybervisiontech.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (falcon.cybervisiontech.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id GdTgJbpazjiK; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 12:56:49 +0200 (EET) Received: from [10.2.1.87] (gateway.cybervisiontech.com.ua [88.81.251.18]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by falcon.cybervisiontech.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5336043C60D; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 12:56:49 +0200 (EET) Message-ID: <47A2FAF0.70001@icyb.net.ua> Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2008 12:56:48 +0200 From: Andriy Gapon User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 (X11/20080123) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Vojtech Pavlik References: <4799D78F.6000405@icyb.net.ua> <47A097FA.3090303@icyb.net.ua> <20080130164508.GC6257@suse.cz> <47A2E7E5.1040307@icyb.net.ua> <20080201093806.GA4632@suse.cz> In-Reply-To: <20080201093806.GA4632@suse.cz> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: mouse problems [A4 Tech OP-3D] X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2008 10:56:51 -0000 on 01/02/2008 11:38 Vojtech Pavlik said the following: > On Fri, Feb 01, 2008 at 11:35:33AM +0200, Andriy Gapon wrote: >> I did the same in FreeBSD psm.c, i.e., added a call to >> enable_msintelli() at the very start of enable_msexplorer(). No bootcamps, just insert, install and all the video, wifi, blutooth, trackpad, sound - working as in osx. do you see the wave of everybody having the daemon logo on macbooks at startup ? As a non-hardware nor kernel developer, what I can help with is creating apps that will expose services of each device in macbook to the end user. I have a macbook so I can help with testing of the provided drivers and corresponding APIs to access the newly fully supported component of the book.
