For example, if I type in my browser http://ftp.freebsd.org, I get the FreeBSD Project Page, whereas I would have expected a directory listing of the FTP tree (like http://ftp1.ro.freebsd.org/). I would like to know whether there is a specific reason why not many mirrors implement this. If there is no specific reason, could we perhaps make this „standard” for FreeBSD mirrors? The reason why I would like to see this implemented is because many times I had to install FreeBSD behind „unfriendly” NAT, which did not translate FTP. Not having HTTP connectivity is generally considered not having Internet connectivity, so HTTP access is guaranteed in almost any network. I cvsup'ed to a different computer (on a completely different network), and then rsynced it to cauchy.math.missouri.edu when the need arose. Here is a list of files where cvsup directly to cauchy.math.missouri.edu failed. Somehow I feel that the actual content of the file plays a role. The host is running RELENG_7, 1.3T, 1.5G of memory. CPU is a only 1.5GHz P4 but I would guess it works for smaller country surrounded by well-mirrored countries. It has 1G network interface. I have been trying to pull in FreeBSD from one of the closer mirrors, but it does not seem to be that simple: - Some FreeBSD mirrors do not have identical timestamps on files, causing rsync to recheck all files every time. This causes extra load, and apparently resulting very long rsync session seems to break to many sites. - Some do not seem to support rsync. It would seem that it would be better to either get access to master site or keep just one source for mirroring. We have enough capacity to most of Europe, so it does not really matter that much, anything close to Netnod in Sweden, Linx in UK or AMS-IX in Netherlands would work. Hello, if you have a plan to become an official mirror, I can allow an access to you on ftp-master.eu.FreeBSD.org located in Czech Republic. For tests, you can try to mirror from public ftp.cz.FreeBSD.org. -- Rudolf Cejka http://www.fit.vutbr.cz/~cejkar Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Information Technology Bozetechova 2, 612 66 Brno, Czech Republic From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 31 16:43:00 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 23E0216A468 for ; Thu, 31 Jan 2008 16:43:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yurtesen@iki.fi) Received: from turkey.ispro.net.tr (ns2.ispro.net [87.251.0.2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9CCF513C47E for ; Thu, 31 Jan 2008 16:42:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yurtesen@iki.fi) Received: from dyn-sparknet-utu.utu.fi ([130.232.254.32] helo=[10.7.252.190]) by turkey.ispro.net.tr with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.68 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1JKcCN-000LwH-8R; Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:23:35 +0200 Message-ID: <47A1F606.4050207@iki.fi> Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:23:34 +0200 From: Evren Yurtesen User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 (Windows/20071031) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Heikki Suonsivu References: <47A1E979.9080109@wlansystems.com> In-Reply-To: <47A1E979.9080109@wlansystems.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Setting up ftp mirror X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp" List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 16:43:00 -0000 Heikki Suonsivu wrote: > I have been setting up a mirror in Finland, as there currently seems to > be none alive.
