The console tty0 screen has been filling up with these kinds of messages since I updated to 6.x. It happened again in 7.0-STABLE and is still apparent in 8.0-CURRENT. I cannot say that this is not defective hardware. This is an old P166 machine that has literally been running 24/7 since 1997 and 2.2.5-RELEASE. It's very stable and reliable albeit slow. The motherboard want recognize big hard drives so I installed an IDE controller which worked with FreeBSD right out of the box for several years now. The controller card is a I/O Flex PCI Ultra DMA/100 Dual Channel IDE Controller Card, model #IOFLEX-571A. Here is a sample of the messages that have been printing on main terminal. Felipe, while looking at your dmesg, yes, I think you're experiencing a ht1000 related problem (unfortunately I've never seen such a controller and have zero experience with it). My limited memory tells me, the controller tries a DMA transfer (very long blocks or too fast, I can't remember the outcome of the analysis) and the driver or controller ends up in loosing data. A discussion about problems like these can be found in the archives (around 2007-12 / 2008-01). I've already emailed Soeren for your problem and I hope he has can share some deep insights on this particular problem with us. > I tried fresh install (minimum distribution set) with i386 and amd64 arch. If you want, I can install again (i386 or amd64). If you already made sure, you've got a fresh install on your disk and no old / wrong ARCH binaries are used, I don't think it will buy us anything if you try to reinstall again. Epler" To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/122462: Fails to boot from an usb harddrive Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:18:08 -0400 I too am experiencing this on a SuperMicro server chassis using IPMI to remotely mount an ISO image (The IPMI interface uses USB to interface for drive mounts, keyboard and mouse) I found that using a FreeBSD-8 boot only CD worked however: 8.0-CURRENT-200803-i386-bootonly.iso - I found this while searching Google, not sure the exact location. Booting that CD then changing the distribution to install FreeBSD7-Release allowed me to install properly. I hope this gets addressed soon!
