I am using Eclipse 3.2.2 with JDK 1.6.0 both from ports without any problems or instabilitites on a FreeBSD 7.0-RC2/amd64. That runs perfectly stable about one year now and is used mainly for Java Development including the Subversion plugin. The bad side... i played a bit with Eclipse 3.3 a few months ago and got a few crashes of the JDKs and/or Eclipse but some of them seemed to be related to FreeBSD-current/threading so i don't know if this is relevant anymore. Maybe you could be a bit more verbose on what environment you use. Apparantly it has been open since July 17th, 2007. I looked on http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java/2007-July/006476.html and 'State' is on 'open'. This issue is a bit of a showstopper for us at the moment; we are considering to move to another OS or another servlet container. Neither option appeals to us, but the 'random' crashes are getting annoying :-/ Any info/advice will be appreciated, Best regards, Eelco den Heijer From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 11 15:10:05 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E5FEB16A4EF for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D58FA13C45E for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m1BFA5xY033039 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m1BFA5j9033036; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:05 GMT Message-Id: <200802111510.m1BFA5j9033036@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org From: Tomas Verbaitis Cc: Subject: Re: java/114644: tomcat goes out of PermSpace, jvm crashes X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Tomas Verbaitis List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:10:06 -0000 The following reply was made to PR java/114644; it has been noted by GNATS. I looked on > http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java/2007-July/006476.html > and 'State' is on 'open'. Thanks for reminding about this issue. Problems with PermGen space are quite common for all contemporary Java applications, just google around for the "tomcat PermGen" and see... AFAIU the key is that by default Java allocates too little memory for object that are kept around permanently and not garbage collected. There is a workaround for this issue: specifying more memory. With Java 1.5 and 1.6 the following switches work good (for Eclipse; although my development Tomcat server, which has contexts reloaded often, crashes when running out of PermGen space, production machines have Tomcat 5.0 and 5.5 running for months without this problem): -XX:PermSize=3D128M -XX:MaxPermSize=3D512M The first option specifies starting PermGen space size, the second -- how big can it grow. Exact values depend on your application's object creation patterns. You should put these options into rc.conf variable tomcat55_java_opts. As Tomcat 5.5 port maintainer, I guess I could a pkg-mesg with the above information, at least. Specifying some default tomcat55_java_opts values seems a bit unreasonable, as -XX Java VM options may disappear without notice. --=20 Tomas "Verbaitis" Verbaitis ** http://megalogika.lt --uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHsGVETZzwEIgdOiYRAkICAJ4xDn5Z+aNQld/E0U21rxjxSjax6ACgq2aF vEJilgSbu0zkulbrU/7mwrc= =FDJL -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 11 15:26:30 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C146316A41B for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:26:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomasv@megalogika.lt) Received: from megalogika.stp.lt (megalogika.stp.lt [193.219.52.197]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 748E613C4DD for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:26:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomasv@megalogika.lt) Received: from pilvas.lan (pilvas.lan [192.169.1.86]) by megalogika.stp.lt (Postfix) with ESMTP id 255FF1CCC7; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 17:09:51 +0200 (EET) Received: by pilvas.lan (Postfix, from userid 1001) id F05F340D3; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 17:09:56 +0200 (EET) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 17:09:56 +0200 From: Tomas Verbaitis To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, white@gang.synchbox.com Message-ID: <20080211150956.GA89514@megalogika.lt> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm" Content-Disposition: inline X-URL: http://blog.hardcore.lt/ve/ X-PGP-Key: http://hardcore.lt/ve/pubkey.txt X-PGP-Key-Fingerprint: E8FB 7C13 99D9 ABDE 0494 B9F6 4D9C F010 881D 3A26 X-nic-hdl: TV13-LT User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.17 (2007-11-01) Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: java/114644: tomcat goes out of PermSpace, jvm crashes X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: tomasv@megalogika.lt List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:26:30 -0000 --uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable > Hi, does anyone know whether anyone is working/looking at this issue? > Apparantly it has been open since July 17th, 2007. Specifying some default tomcat55_java_opts values seems a bit unreasonable, as -XX Java VM options may disappear without notice. --=20 Tomas "Verbaitis" Verbaitis ** http://megalogika.lt --uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHsGVETZzwEIgdOiYRAkICAJ4xDn5Z+aNQld/E0U21rxjxSjax6ACgq2aF vEJilgSbu0zkulbrU/7mwrc= =FDJL -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --uAKRQypu60I7Lcqm-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 11 18:02:15 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40B8516A419 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 18:02:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (gerbercreations.com [71.39.140.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08E6F13C478 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 18:02:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (localhost.eyesbeyond.com [127.0.0.1]) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3) with ESMTP id m1BI2Drp061966; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 10:02:13 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3/Submit) id m1BI2COq061965; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 10:02:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) X-Authentication-Warning: misty.eyesbeyond.com: glewis set sender to glewis@eyesbeyond.com using -f Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 10:02:12 -0800 From: Greg Lewis To: Giulio Ferro Message-ID: <20080211180212.GA61796@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <47B01EBA.4030809@zirakzigil.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <47B01EBA.4030809@zirakzigil.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.2i Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Java desktop (eclipse) X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 18:02:15 -0000 On Mon, Feb 11, 2008 at 11:08:58AM +0100, Giulio Ferro wrote: > Is pretty much unusable. I'm running Eclipse 3.3 on FreeBSD 7/i386 without any problems. I'm using subclipse (not from ports). The project I'm working on has more than 900000 lines of code and things like refactoring run very well. I'm not sure if my eclipse runs on java 5 or 6. I have them both installed. Java -version gives me 1.5. I wil use 1.6 tomorrow. Maybe eclipse on amd64 runs different. Eclipse has native c(++) parts. Add -XX:MaxPermSize=256m to eclipse.ini (/usr/local/eclipse/eclipse.ini) to fix. Also you might want to bump -Xmx up to 512m or more. BTW it would be nice if this file was moved to /usr/local/etc and if it wasn't overwritten during a reinstall. > > > > I already submitted more than one report on this and got no reply. The problem with eclipse-devel is that it invokes realpath(3) with a NULL resolved_path parameter, leading to a segfault. One can easily trigger the bug by clicking File -> Open. This can be worked around by patching the appropriate files. Place the following file in eclipse-devel/files - this file patches the swt FileDialog class to correctly call realpath(3). http://unforgiven.student.utwente.nl/~pyotr/eclipse/post-patch-plugins-swt-gtk-swt-FileDialog.java Add the file to the post-patch part of the port. http://unforgiven.student.utwente.nl/~pyotr/eclipse/Makefile.patch i.e. cd eclipse-devel; patch < Makefile.patch Good Luck! -- Pieter de Goeje From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 11 23:51:19 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F380816A417 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 23:51:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from auryn@zirakzigil.org) Received: from aurynhome1sv1.zirakzigil.org (mail.zirakzigil.org [82.63.178.63]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 3471113C458 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2008 23:51:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from auryn@zirakzigil.org) Received: (qmail 13743 invoked by uid 98); 11 Feb 2008 23:24:35 -0000 Received: from 192.168.1.11 by aurynhome1sv1.zirakzigil.org (envelope-from , uid 89) with qmail-scanner-1.25 ( Clear:RC:0(192.168.1.11):. Do you have any problems with starting after initial startup such as delayed start? Recording of the PID in /domains/domain1/config/.__com_sun_appserv_pid? Did you build it inside jail environment? I've also successfully build it on FreeBSD in both jail and non-jail environment. The initial startup is OK (within 40 seconds) but every other startup there after takes very long (like 5 minutes). Also, the PID is recorded as -1 in pid file... I've tried this in both i386 and amd64 platform for a few weeks now to see what's the cause and I can't seem to find the problem. Which jdk are you running > it > with? I was only able to build SJSAS91 branches with java/jdk15 port. java/diablo-jdk15 failed because of missing sunpkcs11.jar in the jre/lib/ext. As for java/jdk16 failed at maven build stage. I did check the log file and that's the problem. The delayed process isn't logged to file. When the logging started, everything comes up within 30 seconds or so. After the glassfish startup is completed, I can log into the web console OK. However if I do 'asadmin list-domains' or 'asadmin stop-domain', it saids that no domain is running. When I tried to shutdown from the web console, it doesn't shutdown properly. Why not Update 4? Because the source code for Update 4 is not yet released. Its my understanding that it will be sometime next week, but Landon's excellent MacOS X had already waited long enough and I wanted to get it (and other features like NetBSD/amd64 support) out before the tree potentially destabilised due to Update 4 and FreeBSD/sparc64 hitting it. I have ASUS F3Jr notebook with Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and can't build native java from sources. Also I can't run diablo-jdk with same error as I got while compiling jdk15. Error message is: > Error: could not find libjava.so > Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment. In any case, I can run only linux-sun-jdk1[45] and nothing else. compiled package from old P4 system (same sources, same configs, but old single-core cpu) also doesn't work at notebook.. All logs and configs available at http://ns.fluffy.khv.ru/~fluffy.khv/ System is 8.0-CURRENT/i386, but same error I've got with any release - 6-stable, 7.0, 8.0, i386 and amd64 versions. -- Dmitry "Red Fox" Panov @ Home FreeBSD since September, 1995 Khabarovsk, Russia YaIM:redfox_dm | Jabber.org:fluffy | ICQ:1745024 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 15 15:40:02 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 897FE16A420 for ; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BD2913C45B for ; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m1FFe2BD005589 for ; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m1FFe1EC005588; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:01 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200802151540.m1FFe1EC005588@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Dan Nelson Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2A34B16A468 for ; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:35:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: from dan.emsphone.com (dan.emsphone.com [199.67.51.101]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EEA713C455 for ; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:35:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: (from dan@localhost) by dan.emsphone.com (8.14.2/8.14.2) id m1FFZrn4003975; Fri, 15 Feb 2008 09:35:53 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from dan) Message-Id: <200802151535.m1FFZrn4003975@dan.emsphone.com> Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2008 09:35:53 -0600 (CST) From: Dan Nelson To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Cc: Subject: java/120718: [patch] Completely remove jdk16 dependency on cups-base X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:40:02 -0000 >Number: 120718 >Category: java >Synopsis: [patch] Completely remove jdk16 dependency on cups-base >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-java >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: change-request >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Fri Feb 15 15:40:01 UTC 2008 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Dan Nelson >Release: FreeBSD 7.0-PRERELEASE i386 >Organization: The Allant Group >Environment: System: FreeBSD dan.emsphone.com 7.0-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.0-PRERELEASE #532: Mon Jan 28 09:37:54 CST 2008 zsh@dan.emsphone.com:/usr/src-7/sys/i386/compile/DANSMP i386 >Description: The jdk16 port currently requires the cups-base port to be installed to build, which causes havok for any machine not using cups, because cups-base installs incompatible lp/lpq/lpr binaries into /usr/local/bin . Luckily, the java source doesn't really require cups at all; it only wants to #include a few headers. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: The following patch adds the 7 cups headers used by CUPSfuncs.c to the files/cups/ directory and tells the build system to look there.
