My T43 "works" with CPUFREQ, but behaves very strangely. Without it I see: dev.cpu.0.freq_levels: 2000/27000 1750/23625 1600/22600 1400/19775 1333/19666 1166/17207 1066/16733 932/14641 800/13800 700/12075 600/10350 500/8625 400/6900 300/5175 200/3450 100/1725 Without it, I no longer see any energy values (all show '0') and going on/off battery sometimes does not switch powerd properly. Also the system will automatically drop the maximum speed to 800 MHz when on battery. This all happens without cpufreq. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Does your dmesg without cpufreq show acpi_perf? > Without it, (Your correction noted) > With it, > I no longer see any energy values (all show '0') and going > on/off battery sometimes does not switch powerd properly. Also the > system will automatically drop the maximum speed to 800 MHz when on > battery. Why 800MHz, I wonder? Maybe that's falling back to a BIOS setting? > This all happens without cpufreq. What values do you have for these (defaults from /etc/defaults/rc.conf)? performance_cx_lowest="HIGH" # Online CPU idle state performance_cpu_freq="HIGH" # Online CPU frequency economy_cx_lowest="HIGH" # Offline CPU idle state economy_cpu_freq="HIGH" # Offline CPU frequency The thing you've both noted about switching from AC to battery and back is likely /etc/rc.d/power_profile, using the above variables, fighting with powerd's notion of what cpu freq should be set according to load, which causes momentary variations on switching AC/battery profiles unless {performance,economy}_cpu_freq are set to "NONE". The default economy_ values were changed some time ago from "LOW" due to problems, I suspect because modern processors can go so slow like your 100MHz, even 75MHz, unless deliberately overridden with a higher minimum value to remove the lower speed entries from dev.cpu.0.freq_levels As this appears quite common, and poorly/un documented, I'm starting to wonder whether power_profile ought to specifically check if powerd is running before messing with dev.cpu.0.freq at all? I don't think that switching _cx_lowest causes any similar strange effects, and freq switch is just momentary until powerd reasserts itself, but it freaks people :) Thoughts? cheers, Ian From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 9 21:46:56 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 697E31065673 for ; Sun, 9 Mar 2008 21:46:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from osl1smout1.broadpark.no (osl1smout1.broadpark.no [80.202.4.58]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 257128FC14 for ; Sun, 9 Mar 2008 21:46:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Received: from osl1sminn1.broadpark.no ([80.202.4.59]) by osl1smout1.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-3.01 (built Jul 12 2007; 32bit)) with ESMTP id <0JXH00148DP2JA80@osl1smout1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Sun, 09 Mar 2008 21:46:14 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-work.kg4.no ([80.202.173.59]) by osl1sminn1.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-3.01 (built Jul 12 2007; 32bit)) with SMTP id <0JXH00JWEDOTHF60@osl1sminn1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Sun, 09 Mar 2008 21:46:14 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 09 Mar 2008 21:46:02 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-id: <20080309214602.5c65bb02.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> X-Mailer: Sylpheed 2.4.8 (GTK+ 2.12.8; i386-portbld-freebsd6.3) X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH Subject: Acer Aspire 5672 laptop and FreeBSD 7.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 09 Mar 2008 21:46:56 -0000 Hello, This is just a short update for the archives. I just "upgraded" the FreeBSD installation on my Acer Aspire 5672[1] laptop today, by installing FreeBSD 7.0-release / i386 on a partition. Previously the machine had a 6.3-prerelease installed, which wsn't usable as I had to disable acpi to get network connectivity. The hard, cold facts: I still have to disable acpi (by using hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" in /boot/loader.conf) in order to get the network interfaces (wpi and bge) working. If I boot with acpi enabled, the drivers don't attach. Sadly, using this laptop without acpi isn't possible, as both thermal control and cpu speed control also does not work with acpi disabled. More info and dmesg output etc on the web page[1]. Didn't work at all. Tried various configurations/settings; no go. But I have an "old" Netgear card; which is now working fine with FreeBSD 7.0. Strange enough to say, that on my other partition Ubuntu's 7.10 wifi is working out of the box. Any idea to get the "standard nowaday's Intel wifi's" running on FreeBSD? regards Michael * freebsd-mobile-request@freebsd.org [2008-03-10 12:00:14 +0000]: > Send freebsd-mobile mailing list submissions to > freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-mobile > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > freebsd-mobile-request@freebsd.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > freebsd-mobile-owner@freebsd.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of freebsd-mobile digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I even went out and bought an ath(4) to do this, only to be denied by my HP BIOS! Is this sort of feature technically possible, or was it only through the hardware interface exported by the ath binary HAL that this feature is possible? I notice no other wifi cards support hostap. I don't know. And what follows is more likely a description of problem "avoidance" rather than "solution." That said, if your pain level is high enough, "avoidance" may prove a viable strategy: What I do, on my laptop (which has a miniPCI wireless card that is recognized as wi0), is run FreeBSD 6-STABLE (actually, RELENG_6, tracked daily) on slice 1, RELENG_7 on slice 3, and HEAD on slice 4. I have things set up so that /usr/local is the same for all slices, and installed the misc/compat6x port while the machine was running 7-STABLE. All other ports are built & installed while the machine is running RELENG_6. In general, this approach works for me; YMMV. In particular, I verified that I was able to fire up bsd-airtools -- one of my access points at home is an Apple Airport, so bsd-airtools is the only mechanism I have for managing that device -- while running RELENG_7 and HEAD (each built as of this morning). Granted, I built the port under RELENG_6, so this may not be sufficient for your needs. (I was not able to verify that the program behaves properly, as I'm at work, where my Airport is not.) (Not that I have actually tried this.) Does xrandr work on the X61s? If so, this should also be doable by making the Fn+F7 trigger the appropriate xrandr command. Work fine on my T43. IBSS mode is possible but I don't believe hostap mode will be due to a lack of specs/firmware support. Looking at the Intel 4965 chipset aka iwn. Hostap support may be possible with this chipset though it' certainly not implemented at the moment. The connection stability degrades a whole lot. Just to rule out any weather conditions, bad antennas and so on, I'm rebooting with kernel.old. Both drivers suffer from the same problem and work-around cure: If it gets disassociated from the AP, it will go into 'no carrier' mode and after random (long) time has passed, the interface will mark itself as down. The cure is: ifconfig wpi0 down (if it isn't already) ifconfig wpi0 up list scan Anything else won't work. The new driver, will again warn about the timeouts for TX ring 1, 3 and 4 before marking itself up. Since the AP is a FreeBSD ath hostap running 6.3, I'm in pretty good shape to provide some more information. Just tell me what to look for and how to obtain it, since I'm not too familiar with the IEEE802.11 layer. -- Mel Problem with today's modular software: they start with the modules and never get to the software part. The good: - Switching off the radio and back on finally works - nice work. - Scanning seems faster (but see caveat below) - Association is MUCH faster (mind you, I don't use an encrypted AP). - The "failed to align memory" stuff when the driver loads up - fixed. - The fact that it reloaded in the kernel even if I manually kldunloaded if_wpi.ko - fixed The slightly wonky: - As reported by someone else: wpi0: timeout resetting Tx ring 1 wpi0: timeout resetting Tx ring 3 wpi0: timeout resetting Tx ring 4 appear on startup and occasionally on kldload - however they don't appear to adversely affect too much The ugly: - I can only do an ifconfig wpi0 scan every OTHER time - in between successful attempts, I get wpi0: fatal firmware error wpi0: timeout resetting Tx ring (or: timeout resetting Tx ring 0) wpi0: link state changed to DOWN This wouldn't be so bad since it works every other time, but the problem is that every time I do a scan, it sets the link state down, causing the connection to drop - doesn't seem normal. Of course then it comes right back up but the network interruption is not so great. Hmm - what else? The whole thing seems - livelier. I need to run some throughput benchmarks but traffic to/from the card on my local network seems faster and more responsive. Hopefully this isn't the placebo effect. ;) Great work to you & rest of team on this patch... it's more than usable at this point! --Yousif From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 13 01:56:06 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 965E91065671 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:56:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from takash-i@sophia.ac.jp) Received: from rockliff.cc.sophia.ac.jp (rockliff.cc.sophia.ac.jp [133.12.140.38]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 70E7C8FC1B for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:56:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from takash-i@sophia.ac.jp) Received: from heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp (heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp [133.12.138.37]) by rockliff.cc.sophia.ac.jp (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8A00B8AB819 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:56:05 +0900 (JST) Received: from koetoi.cc.sophia.ac.jp (koetoi.cc.sophia.ac.jp [133.12.138.216]) by heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp (Postfix) with ESMTP id 883CAB34048 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:56:05 +0900 (JST) X-AuditID: 850c8ad9-af4c8bb0000008b8-eb-47d889b5ff6e Received: from heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp (heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp [133.12.138.37]) by koetoi.cc.sophia.ac.jp (Symantec Mail Security) with ESMTP id 4C8334DC003 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:56:05 +0900 (JST) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (ph65019.ph.sophia.ac.jp [133.12.65.19]) by heuvers.cc.sophia.ac.jp (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40326B34048 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:56:05 +0900 (JST) Message-ID: <47D889B7.2040405@sophia.ac.jp> Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:56:07 +0900 From: Takashi Inoue User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; ja-JP; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041217 X-Accept-Language: ja, en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org References: <20080311203252.1C8894500F@ptavv.es.net> In-Reply-To: <20080311203252.1C8894500F@ptavv.es.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Brightmail-Tracker: AAAAAA== Subject: Re: ThinkPad x61s X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:56:06 -0000 > You should be able to use the key events trigger code to increment the > sysctl. I connected the two internal antennas the laptop has and the card if working fine, except that the laptop's "wireless switch" does not work. I cannot turn the radio off (better this than the other way round). I remember having read that this switch is connected to one of the mini-pci pins and signals the card to turn off the radio. Why doesn't it work then? Or is it a software / driver issue? My system is: 'FreeBSD kirika.zzz.de 6.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE #2: Mon Jan 21 23:49:38 CET 2008 root@zzz.de:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/KIRIKA i386' 'sysctl dev.ath.0' shows (amoung others): dev.ath.0.%desc: Atheros 5212 dev.ath.0.%driver: ath dev.ath.0.%location: slot=10 function=0 handle=\_SB_.PCI0.PCIB.MPC0 dev.ath.0.%pnpinfo: vendor=0x168c device=0x001a subvendor=0x168c subdevice=0x2052 class=0x020000 dev.ath.0.%parent: pci2 dev.ath.0.countrycode: 0 dev.ath.0.txantenna: 0 dev.ath.0.rxantenna: 1 dev.ath.0.diversity: 1 I am wondering as well: What are the countrycode, tx/rxantenna and diversity settings for? I found no documentation about these. Or are these settings read-only? How are the antenna numbers counted? Should I have 'txantenna=1'? What does the 'countrycode' do and should I set any value (like 49 for Germany)? Thanks Markus D. I that that madwifi.org is a Linux specific driver so I have ignored that site up to now. Setting 'countrycode=276' (Germany) allows the usage of the additional channels 12, 13. I found the answer to my antenna question on madwifi.org, too. Basically if 'diversity=1' I should let the hardware / driver select the antennas to use. If the switch is delivering a gpio interrupt then the current driver doesn't support that. What you need to do is identify the gpio pin+polarity and then add a handler to ath_intr to turn the radio on+off. If you want to pursue that contact me off-line for help (none of my laptops have this setup). > My system is: 'FreeBSD kirika.zzz.de 6.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE #2: Mon Jan 21 23:49:38 CET 2008 root@zzz.de:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/KIRIKA i386' > > 'sysctl dev.ath.0' shows (amoung others): > dev.ath.0.%desc: Atheros 5212 > dev.ath.0.%driver: ath > dev.ath.0.%location: slot=10 function=0 handle=\_SB_.PCI0.PCIB.MPC0 > dev.ath.0.%pnpinfo: vendor=0x168c device=0x001a subvendor=0x168c subdevice=0x2052 class=0x020000 > dev.ath.0.%parent: pci2 > dev.ath.0.countrycode: 0 > dev.ath.0.txantenna: 0 > dev.ath.0.rxantenna: 1 > dev.ath.0.diversity: 1 > > I am wondering as well: What are the countrycode, tx/rxantenna and diversity settings for? They define the set of channels and tx power caps for the device. It's possible to override them but your existing setup should give you coverage for Germany (google for help or look in my sam_vap branch in p4). Diversity controls rx diversity. If the hardware has fast diversity support then it'll be set; otherwise the driver will compensate w/ a software algorithm. This sysctl is r/w. txantenna controls whether a fixed transmit antenna is used on outbound frames. Leave it as zero so the hardware will automatically flip antenna ports on retransmits unless you've got an application that uses a single antenna (e.g. p2p link). rxantenna identifies the default rx antenna the hardware will use. When diversity is enabled this is not important. sysctl -d should give explanations of all sysctl knobs. There are plans to promote some of these sysctl knobs to the net80211 layer and expose them through ifconfig at which point they'll be documented in the man page. Driver-related stuff may be common given the (distant) shared ancestry but for some things freebsd has diverged. When the vap support comes into the tree freebsd will be a proper superset of madwifi.
