The label editor invoked through sysinstall already let me specify values with higher resolution. The problem is that that yields 2016 possible places where the FS could start. (As you pointed out, and as I suspected, you need to hit the right spot) And that's more manual labour than I'm willing to sacrifice. I tried three values, aligned to 1008 sectors. (1008 is the cylinder size) As I said in my other mail, I've no successfully installed FBSD on the Sparc again and I'm now backing it all up over FTP. > dm> I suppose T for toggle newfs=N will do the job, but I'm > dm> paranoid, so I want a second opinion. > > second opinion is, don't use the installer at all. Hmm, what I tried, AFAIK, was to make a dd (Dangerously dedicated) partition, ranging from absolute 0-the last sector. Since the relevant label was not the first one, I suppose it would be contained within the dd partition? Not that it really matters now... > # size offset > # ---------- ---------- > a: 20972448 0 > b: 2097648 41612 > c: 54757584 0 > d: 20972448 20806 > e: 737378208 43693 > > ^^^ this is a crazy disklabel with lots of overlapping partitions. > AFAICT it's not right. Actually, the only thing that's downright wrong is C, which overlaps other labels. The other labels add up just fine. Remember that offset and size are in different units. 1 cylinder = 1008 sectors. (Or whatever the units are) If you put the labels in the order a, d, b, e, and you'll see that it all adds up. /Didrik Madheden From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 20 22:47:29 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8B3171065684 for ; Sun, 20 Jul 2008 22:47:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from didrik@kth.se) Received: from smtp-1.sys.kth.se (smtp-1.sys.kth.se [130.237.32.175]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 535238FC0C for ; Sun, 20 Jul 2008 22:47:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from didrik@kth.se) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smtp-1.sys.kth.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5CAF62340C6 for ; Mon, 21 Jul 2008 00:46:58 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at kth.se Received: from smtp-1.sys.kth.se ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (smtp-1.sys.kth.se [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id AuWJnC-HFbTZ for ; Mon, 21 Jul 2008 00:46:56 +0200 (CEST) Received: from webmail.sys.kth.se (unknown [IPv6:2001:6b0:1:1300:214:38ff:fec5:5a2d]) by smtp-1.sys.kth.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id D34BD157807 for ; Mon, 21 Jul 2008 00:46:56 +0200 (CEST) Received: from 80.217.136.213 (SquirrelMail authenticated user didrik) by webmail.sys.kth.se with HTTP; Mon, 21 Jul 2008 00:46:56 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <28915.80.217.136.213.1216594016.squirrel@webmail.sys.kth.se> Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 00:46:56 +0200 (CEST) From: "Didrik Madheden" To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.5 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Importance: Normal Subject: Dead Sparc X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2008 22:47:29 -0000 During my experiments I happened to put in other RAM bricks from a PC. And then the Sparc died. (Died as in won't even make the PSU fan start spinning any more) Even if I put back the original RAM. The original RAM was 133 MHz, and the other one was 100 MHz. I don't see how that would kill the computer, probably it was just the PSU that died co-incidentally. (I'll try manually starting the PSU later) Still, it's a strange coincidence. Can you tell xc> me more about your configuration? Yes, it was 7.0R/i386 (server)<->7.0R/ia64 (client), mounted over TCP. Doing "cvs co src" from the server triggered the panic. I tried NFS over UDP (default) and one over TCP, the former has no problem under the same load. The mount_nfs options were "-T,ro,bg,intr,noinet6" and the difference was the transport protocol only. Maybe it is because TCP mount uses a larger block size than UDP by default. 7.0R/sparc64 can trigger it with the same configuration as I reported. I am not sure if 7.0R/ppc does, though. In i386<->i386 and i386<->amd64 case, TCP mount seems to work fine, but it is probably because i386 does not throw exception due to misaligned access. -- | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Sat_Jul_26_12_53_42_2008_510)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (FreeBSD) iEYEABECAAYFAkiKn8YACgkQTyzT2CeTzy3VzQCgt79j0Kuo/dheT0WYEQnmMqrj 72UAnivj4DN56ZhhoOpkRqPItsXZ3Ozl =c6mJ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Sat_Jul_26_12_53_42_2008_510)---- From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 26 16:06:56 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C97F1065674; Sat, 26 Jul 2008 16:06:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xcllnt@mac.com) Received: from asmtpout013.mac.com (asmtpout013.mac.com [17.148.16.88]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 774338FC0A; Sat, 26 Jul 2008 16:06:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xcllnt@mac.com) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Received: from [192.168.1.102] (209-128-86-226.BAYAREA.NET [209.128.86.226]) by asmtp013.mac.com (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-6.03 (built Mar 14 2008; 32bit)) with ESMTPSA id <0K4M00K6ZFFJKP10@asmtp013.mac.com>; Sat, 26 Jul 2008 09:06:56 -0700 (PDT) Sender: xcllnt@mac.com Message-id: <7DAAC9F7-0827-4D64-B700-F224BBE30849@mac.com> From: Marcel Moolenaar To: Hiroki Sato In-reply-to: <20080726.125342.231202831.hrs@allbsd.org> Date: Sat, 26 Jul 2008 09:06:54 -0700 References: <20080725.142554.124338824.hrs@allbsd.org> <20080725.161039.177339309.hrs@allbsd.org> <20080726.125342.231202831.hrs@allbsd.org> X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.928.1) Cc: freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: 7.0R panic in nfs_readdirrpc() X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 26 Jul 2008 16:06:56 -0000 On Jul 25, 2008, at 8:53 PM, Hiroki Sato wrote: > Marcel Moolenaar wrote > in : > > xc> > xc> On Jul 25, 2008, at 12:10 AM, Hiroki Sato wrote: > xc> > xc> > Almost the same panic occurred on sparc64, too. Similar to me: o i386/7-STABLE server, o ia64/8-CURRENT client (which at the time of 7-release was therefore running 7-release). o I switched from UDP to TCP when TCP became default. I guess if UDP vs TCP is the problem, then it must be fixed already because I don't see the misalignment panics. I just don't know when it was fixed... -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com
