When I started, I read diffs from FreeBSD's ulpt to NetBSD's, and concluded that FreeBSD's was a lightly-modified (kernel infrastructure issues) version of an older version of NetBSD's. I think a remerge is in order. Support non-blocking reads from USB printers. With this, escputil can query the printer model, and I can print a test page with gutenprint 5.1 and cups. Add many comments explaining why the support is not quite right. (This change is quite a bit less invasive than a "correct" fix, and thus more reasonable to pull up to netbsd-4.) Rototill debugging, so that all DPRINTFN have a level, and so that the message is printed if the debug level is >= the number in the source code. Document debug level plan. Fix bug where only one status change would be printed (by inspection, not tested). Document scheme for reading/discarding data when ulpt(4) is opened for write only. Delete dead code. Plan and patch posted on tech-kern without objections. (I need to boot from the CD=B4s). Anyone know? I have seen some signs of this on Linux via a framework called usb-=20 gadget. I think some people one The BlackDog project have made a driver that =20 does exactly what I want, but its via their special device (just to install =20= drivers) and they don't make it anymore. :( Regards, =D8ystein Andreassen =20= From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 9 06:28:32 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B400F16A419; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:28:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from weongyo@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 78E8413C45D; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:28:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from weongyo@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (weongyo@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m096SWGp074763; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:28:32 GMT (envelope-from weongyo@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from weongyo@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m096SWa7074759; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:28:32 GMT (envelope-from weongyo) Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:28:32 GMT Message-Id: <200801090628.m096SWa7074759@freefall.freebsd.org> To: weongyo@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org, weongyo@FreeBSD.org From: weongyo@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: usb/117150: [zyd] usb zyd device under moderate load panics system X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 06:28:32 -0000 Synopsis: [zyd] usb zyd device under moderate load panics system Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-usb->weongyo Responsible-Changed-By: weongyo Responsible-Changed-When: Wed Jan 9 06:28:01 UTC 2008 Responsible-Changed-Why: Grab this PR. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=117150 From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 9 08:12:34 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 557C316A41A for ; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 08:12:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: from agora.rdrop.com (agora.rdrop.com [199.26.172.34]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 167B213C467 for ; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 08:12:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: from agora.rdrop.com (66@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by agora.rdrop.com (8.13.1/8.12.7) with ESMTP id m098CUot084998 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NOT); Wed, 9 Jan 2008 00:12:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by agora.rdrop.com (8.13.1/8.12.9/Submit) with UUCP id m098CUmx084997; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 00:12:30 -0800 (PST) Received: from fbsd61 by pluto.rain.com (4.1/SMI-4.1-pluto-M2060407) id AA24367; Wed, 9 Jan 08 00:00:23 PST Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2008 23:58:33 -0800 From: perryh@pluto.rain.com To: hselasky@c2i.net Message-Id: <47847ea9.q4PXj00IxpTQPRWF%perryh@pluto.rain.com> References: <477a00ea.73gFojnRSqtUufCO%perryh@pluto.rain.com> <200801011109.12871.hselasky@c2i.net> In-Reply-To: <200801011109.12871.hselasky@c2i.net> User-Agent: nail 11.25 7/29/05 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ZyXEL Omni 56K Plus USB/serial modem X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 08:12:34 -0000 Hans Petter Selasky wrote: > On Tuesday 01 January 2008, perryh@pluto.rain.com wrote: > > Has anyone tried, either successfully or not, to > > use a ZyXEL Omni 56K Plus modem with recent FreeBSD? > > ... > > We need a dump of the USB descriptors to say for sure. > See "/usr/ports/sysutils/udesc_dump" and "man ugen". charset="koi8-u" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline = I'm trying to port a suit called "barry", which provides a library and some = utilities to work with RIM's BlackBerry devices. = It compiles cleanly, but fails to find a connected device at run time. In = fact, it fails to find _any_ devices, even though ``usbdevs -v'' lists = several including the BlackBerry Ok, I see, what's happening... The current implementation of libusb's BSD support (bsd.c) ignores all devices other than ``ugen'': if (strncmp(di.udi_devnames[0], "ugen", 4) != 0) { /* best not to play with things we don't understand */ continue; And BlackBerry is identified as ``umass'' here :( Not sure, how best to solve this -- commenting out the above-quoted "if" simply leads to a failure later, because the code will look for /dev/umassX, which simply would not exist -- umass0 is da3 here. But it might be da0 somewhere else, and there is no way to know, which is which :-( But even if one could figure this out and specify the device to the tool explicitly, daX will not understand ugen's ioctls anyway... What a retarded mess... We really need the low-level (ugen?) interfaces available for all USB-devices -- even those, which are /also/ handled by higher-level interfaces (like ulpt, uscan, umass). As things stand, the higher-level ones are "greedy" and will prevent ugen from appearing, even if one wanted to. Their names may reflect their additional capabilities (ulpt may also print, uscan may also scan) but they must all understand ugen's ioctls. The only work-around is to not have umass, etcaetera in your kernel, but that sucks, because one may want to be able to access /some/ devices as mass-storage, and some others as merely generics... Hans, any hope? That would indicate that you have got a modem endpoint. --HPS From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 9 19:34:22 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3BF7A16A420 for ; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 19:34:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hselasky@c2i.net) Received: from swip.net (mailfe14.swipnet.se [212.247.155.161]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99BD313C455 for ; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 19:34:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hselasky@c2i.net) X-Cloudmark-Score: 0.000000 [] Received: from [85.19.218.45] (account mc467741@c2i.net [85.19.218.45] verified) by mailfe14.swip.net (CommuniGate Pro SMTP 5.1.13) with ESMTPA id 25545122; Wed, 09 Jan 2008 19:34:18 +0100 From: Hans Petter Selasky To: Mikhail Teterin Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 19:34:53 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.7 References: <200801090114.56195@aldan> <200801091015.17730@aldan> In-Reply-To: <200801091015.17730@aldan> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200801091934.54053.hselasky@c2i.net> Cc: johnjen@reynoldsnet.org, R.Tobin@ed.ac.uk, usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: BlackBerry (Re: using libusb) X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 19:34:22 -0000 On Wednesday 09 January 2008, Mikhail Teterin wrote: > = I'm trying to port a suit called "barry", which provides a library and > some = utilities to work with RIM's BlackBerry devices. > > = It compiles cleanly, but fails to find a connected device at run time. And this is not very far away from happening. I've wanted to do this for a long time, but have found no time yet. My plan is to extend /dev/usbX so that it becomes a so-called clonable device. When you open up "/dev/usb0.2.3" for example, you open up the device having index 2 on USB bus 0 and endpoint 3. This will need some modifications in libusb. Ugen will still be there, but I plan to move the functionality over to "usb.c". Accessing endpoints will then work regardless of what drivers are hooked on. Some open problems that needs to be resolved: Should we allow parallell access to USB interfaces? And what about rights management? > > Hans, any hope? I must admit, that /dev/umass2 looks better than /dev/usb0.2, but I don't=20 really care :-) Other than that you will, probably, have to take over=20 maintainership of the libusb port... Maybe, even to the point of bringing i= ts=20 relevant bits and pieces into the src-tree. There is simply too much stuff being written for Linux that uses the libusb= =20 API to ignore it... I think the initial revision should probably be "no" but to keep in mind that it may be needed at a later date. One thing to think about is that I recall some third party printer management tools that needed "ugen" in order to pass through specific usb commands, but then wanted to actually use the "ulpt" device afterwards. It might make sense to have a range of ioctls that should "pass through" all usb devices if possible, sort of like how socket options can be passed down through the socket layer and into the protocol, ie. TCP_NODELAY. As far as rights, for the time being root is probably OK, don't get caught up in details. :) -Alfred From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 10 00:13:32 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1CB216A46C for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 00:13:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xiaofanc@gmail.com) Received: from wa-out-1112.google.com (wa-out-1112.google.com [209.85.146.180]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D29013C4D1 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 00:13:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xiaofanc@gmail.com) Received: by wa-out-1112.google.com with SMTP id k17so775862waf.3 for ; Wed, 09 Jan 2008 16:13:32 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; bh=79cNyGnJZWILO1uXzJWMcEbx/et1XaEOSPrO4j0NuEU=; b=g1/cQRM/CieH1KIp9cf5nwb97dvtWpweHegUpf63ZChViTAxMlIqpQkUqPiekmfEfk4dycHlzJXKn7q1bAlhgNe8LsREivdhcW3J1W2wuYHfLQIoXPbKb9/+1+ASU4lq4f1FVCpKk5/2zVWtJUnqsuxoBYf4P0mGW79ZWFlZrNQ= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=SuulWTAdPprWHP0GmnYyS/22iKjDLfi68OQG093tPnjFU4b87vPDU7Vv/u8nJ87TycubVsQfANC0AxgG1HzjEapL/tTm2sugGNMSUAcUfmiPELNPQewuxKfdRqekU/tJzblJCDaKocWBZUy2nRNI/x3EAOZWKo9Fas8WeEERS3Y= Received: by 10.114.183.1 with SMTP id g1mr1525239waf.3.1199923078639; Wed, 09 Jan 2008 15:57:58 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.114.174.8 with HTTP; Wed, 9 Jan 2008 15:57:58 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 07:57:58 +0800 From: "Xiaofan Chen" To: "Hans Petter Selasky" In-Reply-To: <200801091934.54053.hselasky@c2i.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <200801090114.56195@aldan> <200801091015.17730@aldan> <200801091934.54053.hselasky@c2i.net> Cc: johnjen@reynoldsnet.org, R.Tobin@ed.ac.uk, Mikhail Teterin , usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: BlackBerry (Re: using libusb) X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 00:13:32 -0000 On Jan 10, 2008 2:34 AM, Hans Petter Selasky wrote: > On Wednesday 09 January 2008, Mikhail Teterin wrote: > > We really need the low-level (ugen?) interfaces available for all > > USB-devices -- even those, which are /also/ handled by higher-level > > interfaces (like ulpt, uscan, umass). If you can get this done for FreeBSD, it will be wonderful. On the Linux libusb front, there are two new things going on. One is that the new libusb maintainer will be Daniel Drake and he will use his fpusb as the base for libusb 1.0 and get rid of the old 1.0 code. The 0.1 branch may also get some fixes. http://www.nabble.com/libusb-future-to14571903.html http://reactivated.net/fprint/wiki/Fpusb The other development is OpenUSB (under Solaris and Linux) mainly sponsored by Sun. http://openusb.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page So you might look into these two. > Some open problems that needs to be resolved: > > Should we allow parallell access to USB interfaces? Hi, I think the best will be to write a small C-program: Here is the basic: if (argc < 2) { err(1, "Usage: ./a.out /dev/ugen0.1"); } f = open(argv[1], O_RDWR); if (f < 0) { err(1, "Cannot open '%s'", argv[1]); } /* allow short transfers */ error = 1; error = ioctl(f, USB_SET_SHORT_XFER, &error); if (error < 0) { err(1, "Cannot set short XFER\n"); } error = 1000; error = ioctl(f, USB_SET_TIMEOUT, &error); if (error < 0) { err(1, "Cannot set timeout"); } error = write(f,"AT\r\n", sizeof("AT\r\n")-1); while (1) { error = read(f,buf,1); printf("%c", buf[0]); } You have to modify the above before it compiles. --HPS From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 10 18:50:03 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5462B16A419 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E42A13C455 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m0AIo2Ut090012 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m0AIo2kl090011; Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:02 GMT Message-Id: <200801101850.m0AIo2kl090011@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org From: Baldur Gislason Cc: Subject: Re: usb/119509: USB flaky on Dell Optiplex 755 X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Baldur Gislason List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 18:50:03 -0000 The following reply was made to PR usb/119509; it has been noted by GNATS. If I boot the computer without a keyboard attached and only attach a keyboard after boot I don't seem to have any problems. Same if I install an additional USB controller which the BIOS doesnt use. It is not difficult to modify the code to which you refer; you must *add* branches for the other drivers, and make sure that ugen-specific code later in the function (and in the calling function) is exercised only for ugen. > But it might be da0 somewhere else, and there is no way to know, > which is which :-( > It might be da0 tomorrow. Devfs has a mind of its own. > But even if one could figure this out and specify the device to the > tool explicitly, daX will not understand ugen's ioctls anyway... > Exactly. Modifying libusb as I described above is an exercise in futility (at least on FreeBSD). I made such modifications a few weeks ago, while attempting to deal with similar problems, but finally allowed csup to overwrite them. All you get is a list of device driver names, and you really don't need libusb for that. In fact, libusb is old and krufty, especially the BSD code, and is intended for Linux, which tends to eschew the Unix I/O model (devices as files). They tell us quite clearly that "GNU's not Unix...is not Unix...is not...[insert infinity symbol here]". If you need to scan for devices, much simpler code will do that. > What a retarded mess... > > We really need the low-level (ugen?) interfaces available for all > USB-devices -- even those, which are /also/ handled by higher-level > interfaces (like ulpt, uscan, umass). As things stand, the > higher-level ones are "greedy" and will prevent ugen from appearing, > even if one wanted to. > I agree completely. It seems to me that, so long as we continue to use (and need) so much Linux application code, which almost always wants ugen, we need some way to allow ugen to attach to *every* device, but withut trashing the Unix-style drivers. Just as you said. The current usb code allows devices which advertise multiple function interfaces to attach to drivers for all of them, but if any one of them attaches, the generic driver is excluded. I have an HP C5240 printer which hooks up as ulpt0, umass0, and would also hook up as uscanner0 if the interface info were added to uscanner.c. It has four interfaces, with class, subclass and protocol ids for each of those items. The fourth interface has class 0xff, subclass 0xff, and protocol 0xff, (vendor defined class) which suggests to me that it might be allowed to also hook up as ugen. The problem is that the ugen driver appears to move in with plow and dozer blade and won't play nice with the other interfaces. I don't know enough about the usb code yet to tame it (or even know if it can be tamed). Does anyonw (Hans?) know whether the ugen driver can be altered to attach to a single interface, just like any other driver, leaving other interface setups alone? > Their names may reflect their additional capabilities (ulpt may also > print, uscan may also scan) but they must all understand ugen's > ioctls. > > The only work-around is to not have umass, etcetera in your kernel, > but that sucks, because one may want to be able to access /some/ > devices as mass-storage, and some others as merely generics... > A similar problem occurs to many of us who have HP printers which hook up (quite properly, it seems to me) on ulpt0. Mine also hooks up on umass0 (to service the flash memory card slots), and would hook up on uscanner0, too, if uscanner.c were modified to recognize it. If we want to use HP's software (HPLIP) to drive the printer we must arrange arrange for it to be ugen. It's easy to leave ulpt out of the kernel config, and apparently some people have solved their HPLIP problems that way, but also leaving umass out and loading it as a module later (which works to connect the printer via ugen). You could try leaving umass out of your config, and loading it as a module, but when I do that, devfs refuses to notice the "hardwired" USB flash memory reader on the computer, and the one on the printer doesn't exist anymore; I lose them both. I am currently using a modifed quirk system which allows a device to be named UGEN_ONLY; all specific interfaces will be ignored and the device will attach as ugen. It is also necessary to add an option (UGEN_ONLY_QUIRKS) to the kernel config to enable this. You're right, this sucks, but at least I can use my printer. I can use the computer-based flash memory slots, too, if if leave cards in the slots at boot time. (That's another issue). > Hans, any hope? When I try to connect it to an already booted machine, however, I am getting device recognized (there is an umass: message on console), then, after a delay of around 10-20 seconds, the machine panics, like that: http://www.tobez.org/scratch/lacie_freebsd.jpg I've tried it on a CURRENT from the beginning of October and on CURRENT from the end of December, with the same results. As to the original issue, I reported the same thing with my Olympus camera. It used to work fine, so this is a regression. It crashes current but simply fails when I use the HPS USB stack. (After a few seconds, the camera simply turns itself off.) As the original posted offered, I can provide a dump and posted the backtrace. Maybe we should move to the model where we attach drivers to interfaces or even particular endpoints? What about sharing the control endpoint? Did NetBSD do any progress in this area? (I can see their current USB and Bluetooth stacks are more advanced then ours). And what wonders me most - we are lucky if we end up with a standard tty or storage interface in the end, but what userland interface should we give for example to SANE? sanei_usb interface defines : "usb_write_bulk", that goes as a simple write() to our /dev/uscanner, "usb_read_bulk" - simple read(), "usb_read_int" (not supported with /dev/uscanner), "usb_control_msg" that sends a message to a control pipe (USB_DO_REQUEST of ugen, available to uscanner only if you patch it). My scanner (HP3300C) needs to talk to the control pipe to read/write its registers for example. --Marcin From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 11 17:50:18 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A91B16A41B for ; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 17:50:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hselasky@c2i.net) Received: from swip.net (mailfe14.swip.net [212.247.155.161]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C314813C469 for ; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 17:50:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hselasky@c2i.net) X-Cloudmark-Score: 0.000000 [] Received: from [85.19.218.45] (account mc467741@c2i.net [85.19.218.45] verified) by mailfe14.swip.net (CommuniGate Pro SMTP 5.1.13) with ESMTPA id 27858330; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 18:50:15 +0100 From: Hans Petter Selasky To: perryh@pluto.rain.com Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 18:50:58 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.7 References: <477a00ea.73gFojnRSqtUufCO%perryh@pluto.rain.com> <200801101638.19620.hselasky@c2i.net> <47871344.bvH7YPY9QJF3xIgB%perryh@pluto.rain.com> In-Reply-To: <47871344.bvH7YPY9QJF3xIgB%perryh@pluto.rain.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200801111850.59173.hselasky@c2i.net> Cc: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ZyXEL Omni 56K Plus USB/serial modem X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 17:50:18 -0000 On Friday 11 January 2008, perryh@pluto.rain.com wrote: > > > > To me it looks like they are using some kind of propritary > > > > protocol. What about sharing the control endpoint? Hi, The control endpoint is already shared and we do already support per interface driver attach. What is missing is some glue between userland and the USB kernel. Extending my previous idea: /dev/usb... If the iface is 255 then the iface number is ignored, and we are opening a raw endpoint. Only the super user is allowed to do this. Else the rule becomes that endpoints on an interface can only be opened when no other kernel driver is attached to that particular interface, unless you are super user. What do you think ? --HPS From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 11 18:24:04 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9014D16A418 for ; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 18:24:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mi+kde@aldan.algebra.com) Received: from aldan.algebra.com (aldan.algebra.com [216.254.65.224]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41DE913C4D3 for ; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 18:24:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mi+kde@aldan.algebra.com) Received: from aldan.algebra.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by aldan.algebra.com (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id m0BINwSl001985 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 11 Jan 2008 13:24:01 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mi+kde@aldan.algebra.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [[UNIX: localhost]]) by aldan.algebra.com (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id m0BINwAF001984; Fri, 11 Jan 2008 13:23:58 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mi+kde@aldan.algebra.com) From: Mikhail Teterin To: Hans Petter Selasky Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 13:23:57 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.7 References: <200801090114.56195@aldan> <47877B84.9050106@system.pl> <200801111910.41509.hselasky@c2i.net> In-Reply-To: <200801111910.41509.hselasky@c2i.net> X-Face: %UW#n0|w>ydeGt/b@1-.UFP=K^~-:0f#O:D7whJ5G_<5143Bb3kOIs9XpX+"V+~$adGP:J|SLieM31VIhqXeLBli" Cc: Marcin Cieslak , freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: BlackBerry (Re: using libusb) X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 18:24:04 -0000 On =D0'=D1=D4=CE=C9=C3=D1 11 =D3=A6=DE=C5=CE=D8 2008, Hans Petter Selasky w= rote: =3D /dev/usb... If we want to use HP's software (HPLIP) >> to drive the printer we must arrange arrange for it to be ugen. I think "must arrange to be ugen" is I think too much - shouldn't we say "should we make this interface think it is talking via libusb to the proper endpoint"? I guess there are two problems with getting libusb-only applications to work on whatever shiny new USB stack we come up: 1. Get the scanning and device detection properly 2. Provide nice way to use control and interrupt endpoints using FreeBSD syscalls. I've had a quick look at sane, libgphoto2 and hplip they don't really use all very complicated logic - they just plain write to the pipes. For sane it is a matter of getting sanei_usb interface right - for libgphoto2 everything is in one file only (libgphoto2_port/usb/libusb.c), hplip has interesting stuff in io/hpmud/musb.c. I think those above are two different problems - solving #1 in a nice way - for example by doing bus enumeration usb(4) controller interface and then access provided via FreeBSD devices - will allow us to keep existing /dev/umassX naming scheme without the need to provide raw /dev/usbX.Y.Z access. I think it is realistic to have our own "libusb" (API-compatible but does not have to be related to the original project). > If both are currently available via the same USB cable, then it is already a > good improvement /and/ it should be easy to add ugen to the mix too -- we > might not need to wait for Hans' full and comprehensive rework to get > this... I have looked at the berry code and what I see is that most of the controller.cc and usbwrap.cc job is already done by the FreeBSD kernel and actually we probably might need a tiny Blackberry driver doing something like probe.cc and plug this easily into the application. A real test how nice is C++ object encapsulation :-) Can you send the udesc_dump (in ports/sysutils) output of a Blackberry and multifunction HP devices? My dream solution for control/interface would be if we could provide chipset-specific interface on top of our stack like ECP (/dev/uprinter0.ecp or whatever) or chipset support (/dev/uniash0), providing just "write register" and "read register" like operations. --Marcin From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 12 09:02:56 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2AC3116A41B for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 09:02:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: from agora.rdrop.com (agora.rdrop.com [199.26.172.34]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C00713C458 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 09:02:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: from agora.rdrop.com (66@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by agora.rdrop.com (8.13.1/8.12.7) with ESMTP id m0C92qTu079908 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NOT); Sat, 12 Jan 2008 01:02:52 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from perryh@pluto.rain.com) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by agora.rdrop.com (8.13.1/8.12.9/Submit) with UUCP id m0C92qPL079907; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 01:02:52 -0800 (PST) Received: from fbsd61 by pluto.rain.com (4.1/SMI-4.1-pluto-M2060407) id AA00536; Sat, 12 Jan 08 00:57:50 PST Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2008 00:54:24 -0800 From: perryh@pluto.rain.com To: hselasky@c2i.net Message-Id: <47888040.JTeoxrD2xSYlFttA%perryh@pluto.rain.com> References: <477a00ea.73gFojnRSqtUufCO%perryh@pluto.rain.com> <200801101638.19620.hselasky@c2i.net> <47871344.bvH7YPY9QJF3xIgB%perryh@pluto.rain.com> <200801111850.59173.hselasky@c2i.net> In-Reply-To: <200801111850.59173.hselasky@c2i.net> User-Agent: nail 11.25 7/29/05 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ZyXEL Omni 56K Plus USB/serial modem X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2008 09:02:56 -0000 > > Either the device doesn't like this sort of thing, > > or I did something wrong: > > > > # ls -l /dev/ugen* > > crw-r--r-- 1 root operator 1, 15 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ugen0 > > crw-r--r-- 1 root operator 1, 16 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ugen0.1 > > crw-r--r-- 1 root operator 1, 17 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ugen0.2 > > crw-r--r-- 1 root operator 1, 18 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ugen0.3 > > crw-r--r-- 1 root operator 1, 19 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ugen0.4 > > Hi, > > It is strange that you cannot open "/dev/ugen0.X". A PC has not the required hardware to do so. There are USB devices and USB hosts. You can only connect a single USB host to many devices, but not two hosts together. There are interlink cables on the market, but those present an USB device to both sides and are not generic to do anything else than the profile they are build for. Hans Petter however did implement USB device software support to allow FreeBSD beeing used as a device. It at least supports the AT91RM9200 internal USB device controller, but I don't know if it supports anything else. And I think he just did implement a CDC ethernet device and not umass, so software needs to be written anyway. I've CC'ed him, since he can answer about other hardware that he possibly supports. I would have liked to offer the AT91RM9200 based board we produce ourself, but it wasn't designed for this purpose so our current board has no device ports. But we are planning an extended version, so this might change in the near future. There a USB device controllers that can be added to PCs, but most of them are more designed for teaching purpose. For example I'd seen PDIUSBD11 chips hooked up to printer ports, but this chip is not being manufactured anymore and this type of interfacing is very slow. The situation is much better if you use SCSI. You can interconnect two SCSI controller together - given that the addresses on both controller are not configured to be the same. FreeBSD has code for emulation disk drives with target capable SCSI controllers, which at least is supported by the ahc(4) driver. The controller on the other box can just be of any kind. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 12 11:54:24 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD6EC16A417 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 11:54:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from raven.bwct.de (raven.bwct.de [85.159.14.73]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2D75D13C506 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 11:54:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely5.cicely.de ([10.1.1.7]) by raven.bwct.de (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id m0CBsM9k079388; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 12:54:23 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely12.cicely.de (cicely12.cicely.de [10.1.1.14]) by cicely5.cicely.de (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id m0CBsBpZ035041 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Sat, 12 Jan 2008 12:54:11 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: from cicely12.cicely.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cicely12.cicely.de (8.13.4/8.13.3) with ESMTP id m0CBsAcV094313; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 12:54:10 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso@cicely12.cicely.de) Received: (from ticso@localhost) by cicely12.cicely.de (8.13.4/8.13.3/Submit) id m0CBsA6S094312; Sat, 12 Jan 2008 12:54:10 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ticso) Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2008 12:54:10 +0100 From: Bernd Walter To: ahmad badri Message-ID: <20080112115410.GJ79270@cicely12.cicely.de> References: <3b9a81b00801071919n589cac56uf9a47f167a1e6f84@mail.gmail.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <3b9a81b00801071919n589cac56uf9a47f167a1e6f84@mail.gmail.com> X-Operating-System: FreeBSD cicely12.cicely.de 5.4-STABLE alpha User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.4 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED=-1.8, BAYES_00=-2.599 autolearn=ham version=3.2.3 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.2.3 (2007-08-08) on cicely12.cicely.de Cc: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Driver needed X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: ticso@cicely.de List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2008 11:54:24 -0000 On Tue, Jan 08, 2008 at 11:19:14AM +0800, ahmad badri wrote: > driver win XP / Vista for ST268 USB NIC This list is about FreeBSD a free operating system. Hi, The current implementation of USB device support only implements CDC ethern= et.=20 Adding support for a mass storage device is not a big deal. I had the same problem with this digital camera, but a little bit different solution. The main idea is to leave the old "wildcards" unchanged, 'cause we've got at least two success stories in the hardware compatibility list (Asahi Optical Optio 230 & 330). And we don't know for sure whether changing proto would have negative impact on devices of those two models.
