One of the things that I've been working on with someone (whose name escapes me) and Bruce Evans is trying to address these issues. One problem we have today is that when the device return ENXIO, the buffer cache retries the operation rather than failing it upstream. There are a number of issues with doing this, including fixing all the filesystems to cope with errors. I've committed a number of 'keep the system from panicing' type fixes, but much works remains to be done. And my time this month is very limited, as will next month's because work is being insane. This system is not able to boot a FreeBSD installation CDROM or floppy drive from any USB device (I tried three). It boots and installs fine from an IDE CDROM drive. The problem is before it even gets to the 10 second countdown screen, the screen goes crazy fast scrolling unreadable error dumps. After installation via IDE CDROM, the system can use USB normally and even mount the USB CDROM just fine. # dmesg | grep usb usb0: on uhci0 usb0: USB revision 1.0 uhub0: on usb0 usb1: on uhci1 usb1: USB revision 1.0 uhub1: on usb1 usb2: on uhci2 usb2: USB revision 1.0 uhub2: on usb2 usb3: EHCI version 1.0 usb3: companion controllers, 2 ports each: usb0 usb1 usb2 usb3: on ehci0 usb3: USB revision 2.0 uhub3: on usb3 I tried primarily a 7.0-RC1 cdrom, but also a 6.2-STABLE boot cdrom. Well, unflushed buffers will obviously be discarded, but this scenario is focused on small umass devices, which should be mounted with -o sync. In this case, everything will typically already be written to disk. The in-flight I/O part used to be a cause of crashes, but this should work now, with the patches that Warner has already committed to 8.0-CURRENT. > This problem is one of a number of problems within FreeBSD where there > is a disconnect between the people who want the problem solved and those > with the skills to actually solve the problem. It just means that sometimes I have to be the one who volunteers a solution. Ideally, that solution would then be reviewed and either committed to the tree or rejected for a valid technical reason. Unfortunately, there are few volunteers for this part of the process :-( On Sat, 2008-01-26 at 20:40 -0700, M. I'd like to think that I'm "someone" :-) While I agree with you that there is still work to do, I think most of it would actually be side issues not directly related to usb/46176 or usb/84336. Things should be working for USB memory sticks and cameras, but perhaps flash cards still trigger it, or file systems other than msdosfs have problems, or the fix happens to introduce a memory leak. All of these problems would be better handled with more specific PRs. Writing as the guy who actually spent two and a half hours in a futile attempt to reproduce this problem with all patches applied, I'd say that the usb/46176 problem has passed on. It is no more. It has ceased to be. This is an ex-bug! At least until someone tells me why I'm a fool! :-) /Henrik P.S. I will post a link to this message at the usual place ( http://www.gulbra.net/freebsd-usb/ ), so you can find it when it's needed. Now, back to our regular program: On Sat, 2008-01-26 at 20:40 -0700, M. Warner Losh wrote: > And my time this month is very limited, as will next month's because > work is being insane. I appreciate the fact that you still take the time to comment, since I would normally get a long email backlog under similar circumstances. Anyway, whenever you or someone else gets the time to think about this again, it might be a good idea to have a look at the scsi_da.c patch. This email will give some extra motivation for it. My memory is already starting to fade, but according to my handwritten notes, the chain of events is as follows: The umass detach correctly triggers the following sequence: umass_cam_detach_sim(umass_softc *sc) xpt_bus_deregister(cam_sim_path(sc->umass_sim)) cam_sim_free(ss->umass_sim, TRUE) ...and the only serious bug remaining is that a later unmount will try to close the da device via daclose, which will access the SIM that has already been released. Actually, it calls cam_periph_lock(), which will try to lock a mutex located in the SIM struct. Now, as you may recall, the SCSI subsystem has actually been designed to handle disappearing devices, presumably for things like hot swapping, so the xpt_bus_deregister() call has already invoked this call chain: xpt_bus_deregister(cam_sim_path(sc->umass_sim)) xpt_async(AC_LOST_DEVICE, &bus_path, NULL) daasync(...) cam_periph_async(...) cam_periph_invalidate(...) daoninvalidate(...) disk_gone(softc->disk) [in geom_disk.c] xpt_print(periph->path, "lost device\n") The xpt_print(...) gives us some feedback to the /var/log/messages file, so we know where we are in the process. Under normal circumstances, when there is no mounted file system to interfere with things, the call stack would return to cam_periph_invalidate() and do the following: cam_periph_invalidate(...) camperiphfree(periph) dacleanup(periph) [called as periph->periph_dtor(periph) ] xpt_print(periph->path, "removing device entry\n"); disk_destroy(softc->disk) [in geom_disk.c] ...shimmering GEOM magic... At this point, the disk is gone, and the periph struct will be released. Unfortunately, in our case the file system still holds a reference to the periph, which keeps it from being freed in cam_periph_invalidate(). Instead, we end up with an existing device that holds an invalid pointer to the already released SIM struct, ultimately leading to system panic. My patch for this problem simply adds an extra explicit daclose() call, immediately after the "lost device" printing listed above, and sets the periph pointer in our disk struct to NULL. Some of you may be worried about that disk_destroy() call. At least, it suddenly made me worried, so I just double-checked it. It's true that having a destroyed disk is potentially dangerous, since the file system will normally access this during the unmount. However, it turns out that GEOM is already prepared for this case and has a special check in g_disk_access(), so the second call to daclose() will never actually be made. The alternative option would have been for GEOM to recognize the extra disk reference and keep the struct alive until daclose(). In that case, the first statement in that function would already be checking our periph and return ENXIO when it's NULL, so we would still be safe. >From a system design perspective, it would be cleaner if the daclose() call originated from the same layer as the original daopen(), but under the circumstances I don't think this is too bad. It's hard to avoid... Finally, take the above description with a grain of salt, since I had to reconstruct some parts of it that were not found in my notes. Also, when I tested the disk_destroy() stuff a few minutes ago, I realized that the msdosfs_vfsops.c patch is as vital as the scsi_da.c one, which probably means that the -o sync option is equally vital, since the msdosfs fix is intended to be restricted to that. It looks like GEOM has another ENXIO problem in this area, but I'm not planning to investigate that today... /Henrik From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 27 18:49:48 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B035F16A41A; Sun, 27 Jan 2008 18:49:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from harmony.bsdimp.com (bsdimp.com [199.45.160.85]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B95C13C459; Sun, 27 Jan 2008 18:49:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by harmony.bsdimp.com (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id m0RIlE0S099151; Sun, 27 Jan 2008 11:47:14 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2008 11:47:20 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <20080127.114720.-1001128995.imp@bsdimp.com> To: henrik@gulbra.net From: "M. Seems like disabling USB when 1.5G is plugged in works, but then I loose my working USB which I use for my working memory stick and floppy drive. Enabling and disableing ACPI had no effect. When I enable usb, dmesg is the same up to the point of hanging with the exception of the mem and iomem fields in the "atapci0" and "atapci1" lines. With 1.5G and usb enabled, my hung kernel says: atapci0: ...mem 0x80207600 - 0x802077ff... the port locations are the same atapci1: ...mem 0x80207400 - 0x802075ff... the port locations are the same Attached are full dmesg outputs of configurations that work, i.e. no hang: "dmesg_0.5G" - 0.5G memory, full usb, full ACPI (6.3 .iso kernel) "dmesg_1.0G" - 1.0G memory, full usb, full ACPI (6.3 .iso kernel) "dmesg_1.5G_nousb" - 1.5G memory, no usb, full ACPI (6.3 .iso kernel) I also tried 6.2 .iso kernel from the install CD and it still hangs with 1.5G. I do not know how I can provide you with a full dmesg when the system hangs. Can you tell me how I can log output of a boot sequence that hangs for later analysis? I have no shells in which to run dmesg. Extended logging does not help as I still do not know how to log it. -----Original Message----- >From: Remko Lodder >Sent: Jan 27, 2008 5:44 AM >To: Kenneth Freidank >Cc: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org >Subject: Re: kern/120034: 6.2 & 6.3 hangs on boot at usb0: OHCI with 1.5 G memory, works with 512 M > >Kenneth Freidank wrote: > >Could you disable USB support in the bios and see where that leads >up to? could it be that the additional memory kicks in the USB >controller? and/or perhaps any other region? > >You did not provide a full boot dmesg btw; just giving parts of >it makes it very hard to see what might be going on, in addition >it could be interesting to start the freebsd installation without >acpi support, and doing a boot verbose (that's 2 additional things >we might like to see). > >Thanks, >remko > >-- >/"\ Best regards, | remko@FreeBSD.org >\ / Remko Lodder | remko@EFnet > X http://www.evilcoder.org/ | >/ \ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | Against HTML Mail and News ------------OIMQJV4d8WPYIxnea41D38 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="dmesg_0.5G" Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name=dmesg_0.5G Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Copyright (c) 1992-2008 The FreeBSD Project. I have successfully used the patches by Henrik Gulbrandsen (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=46176&cat= ) to avoid kernel panic after device removal, and the only problem remaining is cache management. If the device is mounted without the sync option, the performance is perfect, but hot removal sometimes causes data corruption on the flash disk. If sync option is used while mounting the device, write performance becomes terrible (20 KB/s). Is there any way to improve write performance with sync option or prevent data corruption without it? I understand that umount should be used to completely avoid these problems, but in my case it is not possible to invoke it, since the users will not be given shell access. With best regards, P. Peter, I think you may be overly optimistic here. The patches that you are referring to (those that have already been committed to the tree) are only part of the full solution. Even if you integrate the full set of current patches (from http://www.gulbra.net/freebsd-usb/ ), things have only been alpha-tested on 8.0-CURRENT. Older kernels will have their own ways of failing, and I guess even 8.0-CURRENT will have regressions as it starts changing. Just so you know what you're into, the partial fix may seem to work, but can give you a system panic after up to a few hundred detach attempts. Or after less than ten attempts. It's really a random timing issue. That doesn't mean that it is impossible to fix the bug for FreeBSD 6.3. It just means that (a) you're basically on your own, and (b) you will have to test it very carefully. 1000 attach/detach cycles take about 2-3 hours of manual testing. You really don't want to do it. If you're about to do it anyway, I'd recommend having some good background music... > If the device is mounted without the sync option, the performance is > perfect, but hot removal > sometimes causes data corruption on the flash disk. If sync option is used > while mounting the device, > write performance becomes terrible (20 KB/s). Is there any way to improve > write performance with sync option > or prevent data corruption without it? No idea. I guess you can always use a noasync mount and regularly call sync(8) to limit the time before it's safe to detach the disk. That may work if users know that they must wait x seconds after finished writing. However, you should know that an msdosfs will try to write the "clean" bit back to disk at unmount. Besides the fact that this writing will obviously fail when the disk is gone, the combination of writing and releasing of kernel structures will exercise other parts of the code, which probably means an increased likelihood of system panic. This is handled in a patch for -o sync, but may give problems without it. > I understand that umount should be used to completely avoid these problems, > but in my case it is not > possible to invoke it, since the users will not be given shell access. Again, be careful! If possible, I would recommend avoiding hot removal for the moment. With the right kernel version, patches, and testing, it will be stable enough for a personal desktop or an internal server, where an occasional crash is not a catastrophe, but keep in mind that this is very much CURRENT code and definitely not STABLE... /Henrik From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 28 21:03:36 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.Org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6281E16A420 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 21:03:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from w8hdkim@gmail.com) Received: from py-out-1112.google.com (py-out-1112.google.com [64.233.166.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0F57213C4E5 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 21:03:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from w8hdkim@gmail.com) Received: by py-out-1112.google.com with SMTP id u52so2620549pyb.10 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:03:35 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; bh=AnIsX1z9UlH/eo1ZV8by2CTSbvgWv419ytBckTrGyEs=; b=FF6fY7IXirtmPDW0edWnK4xh7LGRBoylq9vm5Yg5bU/Fw5biYBne3frucBqnZxwmGRdbHz56oI/CclAyp1phsrmW8txBBmr32d/5X0FTRvcSJYWLNRZ/xYdFG3y3e/cu6VYGhK8yy8W8lJcnH48tMGjKXsN2mpbdODvCzzotUrI= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=q7Fkdfnl2AlQLWekrx7FRT/oLg8oNCsMuOleoq1g3GgzjvXfMIqQt27IbV6dWkbZeiqbAW4StF/bCNneFFQ0ZKTQHc0DqVDUCTbXjENFzG5xlgsjM5WcfZxrm3cSXgk5wXQCprnNFSvTLi/W5KDj8kStnfP6xkwXsYHTimH9HDg= Received: by 10.65.15.19 with SMTP id s19mr12393360qbi.17.1201554214599; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:03:34 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.65.219.2 with HTTP; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:03:34 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <89dbfdc30801281303q416cd4a3s36b499c37b8f2a4a@mail.gmail.com> Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 16:03:34 -0500 From: "Kim Culhan" To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.Org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Cc: Subject: rum0 page fault on FreeBSD 7-PRERELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 21:03:36 -0000 Using a Hawking HWUG1 with rum0 running FreeBSD 7-PRERELEASE cvsup'd to releng_7 on 1-27-08. rum0: on uhub5 rum0: MAC/BBP RT2573 (rev 0x2573a), RF RT2528 rum0: Ethernet address: 00:0e:3b:08:d0:e6 rum0: if_start running deferred for Giant When the machine is booted rum0 immediately attaches to an AP. It's really a random timing issue. In my case system stability is not the key issue, since I am just setting up a terminal to be used by students. But I will print warnings everywhere... Just a small suggestion for your patch set. The /etc/devd/umass script contains the following: # Verify that there is a slice to mount if [ ! -e /dev/${drv}s1 ]; then exit 1; fi I have seen some flash drives which do not contain any partitions, i.e. they look like a big floppy. In this case one should not look for /dev/daXsY, but mount /dev/daX. To get it, the FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE will be used to test. I'll download it from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/7.0/ burn it to a CD, and attempt to install it on a Supermicro motherboard via a USB-CDROM. If it works, I'll pay the bounty. :) If it is a patch somewhere on the site but not incorporated into the FreeBSD 7.0 RELEASE ISO, the bounty is not offered. RELEASE is getting close, the RC1 did not past the test! UPDATE, the bounty is now $70 in honor of FreeBSD 7.0! Thanks for the reminder! I know I've seen this mentioned somewhere else, but I guess I was hoping that someone with access to one of those drives would submit a tested patch, so I wouldn't have the risk of leaving some stupid mistake in the code. Yes, the console now reports ucom0: FIDI usb serial converter, rev 1.10/4.00, addr 3 and /dev contains: crw-rw---- 1 uucp dialer 1, 23 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/cuaU0 crw-rw---- 1 uucp dialer 1, 24 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/cuaU0.init crw-rw---- 1 uucp dialer 1, 25 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/cuaU0.lock crw------- 1 root wheel 1, 20 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ttyU0 crw------- 1 root wheel 1, 21 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ttyU0.init crw------- 1 root wheel 1, 22 Nov 24 21:17 /dev/ttyU0.lock so apparently the combination of uftdi and ucom picked it up. (I already had ucom loaded from the earlier attempt to get the modem recognized as a USB <==> serial device.) Short of guesswork, or loading everything, how would one go about figuring out which of the various uxxx shims is going to be needed to connect a given serial device to ucom? I notice that "man uftdi" does not mention "FIDI" (granted "FTDI" is close). The best way of matching a USB device to an unloaded driver, is to check for the VID (Vendor ID) and PID (Product ID) of the device and compare them to those listed in the various drivers. Doing a BUS_DMASYNC_PREREAD in usbd_start_transfer() fixes the problems, see this patch: http://people.freebsd.org/~raj/patches/misc/usbdi-bus_dma-fix.diff I'd like to hear comments from people knowing other architectures if they have any comments/objections. I figure a first step in that direction is to get it recognized as a uhid device. I find it hard to believe that I am the first person to do this on a freebsd box, yet googling the only hits I get are about xbox360 gamepad support. uhub7: on uhub1 uhub7: 3 ports with 2 removable, bus powered id->bInterfaceClass 0x58 ugen0: on uhub7 the "id->bInterfaceClass 0x58" is from a printf I added after line 208 in /sys/dev/usb/uhid.c /* The Xbox 360 gamepad doesn't use the HID class. */ printf("id->bInterfaceClass 0x%x\n",id->bInterfaceClass); if (id->bInterfaceClass != UICLASS_VENDOR || id->bInterfaceSubClass != UISUBCLASS_XBOX360_CONTROLLER || id->bInterfaceProtocol != UIPROTO_XBOX360_GAMEPAD) return (UMATCH_NONE); My idea was maybe I could just add a case for this controller. AFAIK, the USB mass storage protocol is basically SCSI over USB. Is there a way to access the disk's SMART data over SCSI / USB? Perhaps as mode pages? Has anyone tried this? The reason I'm asking is this: http://www.sharkoon.com/html/produkte/externe_gehaeuse/sata_quickport/index= .html This could be extremely useful to quickly extract SMART error logs from failing disks after you've replaced them, not to mention wipe them before RMAing them. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an eSATA connector.
