That was without moused. Enabling moused solved that problem, although then you're running moused. The reason I'm tacking this onto the "slow switch to X" thread is that it seems to be affected by moused. With moused enabled, switching from console to X is as fast as ever. There's some interaction between the system, moused, hald, and X that's unclear to me. Seems like X shouldn't need moused. Also seems like moused shouldn't affect the switch from console to X. Some odd interaction with hald, maybe. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 23 00:45:28 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B71E11065681 for ; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 00:45:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from delphij@delphij.net) Received: from tarsier.delphij.net (tarsier.cn.freebsd.org [211.166.10.234]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 609738FC15 for ; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 00:45:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from delphij@delphij.net) Received: from tarsier.geekcn.org (tarsier.geekcn.org [211.166.10.233]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-CAMELLIA256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by tarsier.delphij.net (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4F3AF28448; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:44:57 +0800 (CST) Received: from localhost (tarsier.geekcn.org [211.166.10.233]) by tarsier.geekcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 02FD9EBB398; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:44:57 +0800 (CST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at geekcn.org Received: from tarsier.geekcn.org ([211.166.10.233]) by localhost (mail.geekcn.org [211.166.10.233]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id zMg35VKVupri; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:44:48 +0800 (CST) Received: from charlie.delphij.net (71.5.7.139.ptr.us.xo.net [71.5.7.139]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by tarsier.geekcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id E0C3EEBB345; Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:44:47 +0800 (CST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; s=default; d=delphij.net; c=nofws; q=dns; h=message-id:date:from:reply-to:organization:user-agent: mime-version:to:cc:subject:references:in-reply-to: x-enigmail-version:openpgp:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=r/f+qyzWvuYzCAYMD0D+ZpzCh9m/1EHH6lJucTvjZTZkOLlclPMz9wRWluFJK+j5H N4Ls2Dkwr4fWcEgHAGKEA== Message-ID: <48867EFC.7010701@delphij.net> Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2008 17:44:44 -0700 From: Xin LI Organization: The FreeBSD Project User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 (X11/20080616) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Robert Noland References: <4886689F.7030501@delphij.net> <1216773074.1944.2.camel@wombat.2hip.net> In-Reply-To: <1216773074.1944.2.camel@wombat.2hip.net> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.95.6 OpenPGP: id=18EDEBA0; url=http://www.delphij.net/delphij.asc Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, d@delphij.net Subject: Re: [PATCH] Update xf86-video-intel to 2.3.2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: d@delphij.net List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 00:45:28 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Robert Noland wrote: | On Tue, 2008-07-22 at 16:09 -0700, Xin LI wrote: | Hi, | | Here is a patch, may I commit against ports@? You must have AIGLX for google earth to work on intel/ati hardware. You probably should be using the xf86-video-intel driver with your hardware, and updating your ports would probably help a lot. robert. When moused has been run from boot with moused_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf, switching from a text console to xorg with Alt-F9 is quick, a couple of seconds or less. When moused has been disabled with moused_enable="NO" in /etc/rc.conf, switching from a text console to xorg takes much longer, up to ten seconds before the screen becomes active. Note that moused still gets started in the background by either HAL or xorg. The delay is similar on both a Thinkpad T42 and an Athlon 3000 desktop. It doesn't seem to be hardware-specific. Testing is a little complicated because just killing or enabling and starting moused is not enough to duplicate the problem. Reboot does it. Probably restarting one daemon would be enough, although I haven't found which. I don't think there's enough information to file a PR; if anyone can confirm or deny the problem on another system, or find a more specific daemon/system to blame, it would help. Possible areas: moused, syscons, HAL, xorg-server.
