The problem exists (as already reported above) with 7.1-R and also with the recent 7.2-images I just downloaded and tried. However, from the thread above I cannot figure out what the recommended solution is. Install 7.0 (which has been reported to run) and upgrade to -current (is the matter fixed there?)? Install 7.0 and upgrade to 7.1 or 7.2 patching out the strcmp() checks in the loader? I can vouch that -CURRENT runs on that board. I didn't do the install on it though, just slide the vb8001 into a working system while the original motherboard is being RMA'ed. I'm sure it's too late to get the fix into the 7.2 release, but it'd be nice to see it move into -STABLE as sono as it's legal. g. I can confirm that 7.2-RELEASE-amd64-livefs.iso downloaded this morning does not boot on the VB8001. It gets to Bootng [/boot/kernel/kernel]... then bails with CPU doesn't support long mode g. Unfortunately not really an option here, since this is a new system (without CD and Floppy, I rely on install via usb stick with bootonly image and continue via net). I tried to use 7.0-AMD64 to get started. Booted fine, but refused to get anything useful out of the vge interface. :-( Then I installed 7.2-i386 which booted fine and works with vge. Right now I'm doing a cross-build to amd64 after having modified /usr/src/sys/boot/i386/libi386/bootinfo64.c by hand. GH> I'm sure it's too late to get the fix into the 7.2 release, but it'd GH> be nice to see it move into -STABLE as sono as it's legal. Yes, that would definitely be nice. Do you have any further experience with the mainboard? From my first glance everything else seems to work nicely. However, I didn't try padlock, cpufreq/powerd and stuff like that so far. cu Gerrit From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 4 11:07:40 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BD06106564A for ; Mon, 4 May 2009 11:07:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 57C648FC08 for ; Mon, 4 May 2009 11:07:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n44B7eTm098359 for ; Mon, 4 May 2009 11:07:40 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n44B7dSo098349 for freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 4 May 2009 11:07:39 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 4 May 2009 11:07:39 GMT Message-Id: <200905041107.n44B7dSo098349@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 04 May 2009 11:22:13 +0000 Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 04 May 2009 11:07:40 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). As I found little information about how to upgrade i386->amd64 in-place, I thought it would be easier to install the new amd64 system on a usb stick first. Well, I tried several instructions (e.g. Warner's instructions under and ) which all boil down to the same steps more or less. However, I cannot get my newly installed system to boot from the stick. The bios does not even list the stick as bootable usb media. It was no problem to put the cd images on the stick and boot from it for the installation in the first place (using Dario's conversion script ). I have tried everything I could think of to make the new amd64 system on the usb stick boot - without any success. Does anyone here have an idea why this thing won't boot? luna# ll /dev/da4* crw-r----- 1 root operator 0, 97 May 5 00:02 /dev/da4 crw-r----- 1 root operator 0, 98 May 5 00:02 /dev/da4s1 crw-r----- 1 root operator 0, 99 May 5 00:02 /dev/da4s1a crw-r----- 1 root operator 0, 100 May 5 00:02 /dev/da4s1c luna# fdisk -p da4 # /dev/da4 g c974 h255 s63 p 1 0xa5 63 15647247 a 1 luna# bsdlabel -A da4s1 # /dev/da4s1: type: SCSI disk: da5s1 label:=20 flags: bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 63 tracks/cylinder: 255 sectors/cylinder: 16065 cylinders: 974 sectors/unit: 15659008 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # milliseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds drivedata: 0=20 8 partitions: # size offset fstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] a: 15647231 16 4.2BSD 0 0 0=20 c: 15647247 0 unused 0 0 # "raw" part, don't edit bsdlabel: partition c doesn't cover the whole unit! bsdlabel: An incorrect partition c may cause problems for standard system utilities Actually it should also be possible to boot into a different disk from the loader prompt. Somehow I seem to have a bad day, because I cannot get this to work either. So I do also gratefully accept any hints how to boot into that system on the usb stick from the loader prompt. lsdev comes up with 6 disks there (probably the cf card I installed the i386 system on, the usb stick I installed the amd64 system on and 4 further disks (da0-da3 in the booted i386 system above) I intend to use for data later - disk0 and disk1 are listed with ffs file systems, so these are probably the cf card (ad13 in the booted i386 system above) and the usb stick (da4 in the booted i386 system above)).
