I had however one other HP165G5 (8 Gb ram) which had sporadic boots and re-boots; also sporadic install failures. One would expect that it had a memory problem, yet memtest, run for 5 days straight didn't have a singe glitch. Since FreeBSD is not a 'supported' OS for HP, I was stuck with their tech support because they wouldn't help me, leaving it to my own devices. I had to get an OS which HP -did- support to garner their help. So I downloaded SuSe Live 64-bit 11.1 (and now they have 11.2). To make a long story short, SuSe Live would not boot, and with its help I found one stick of ram which was bad. Replaced that stick and everything works as expected. Since I have isolated the bad stick with a 'supported' OS, HP replaced it no problem. Running memtest on that one bad stick found ZERO errors on the stick. So, SuSe Live 64 bit CD has become my memory tester of choice. FreeBSD is my OS of choice. So, perhaps, your Thinkpad simply has bad memory? And a SuSe live may help you find that out. - Jim Pazarena famd64@paz.bz From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 29 18:46:16 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DC78E106568B; After creating fdisk slices and FSs the installator tries to do newfs and says "Can not find device node /dev/aacd0s1a" (but it just was created). Tried to install not on the ARRAY, but on SATA HDD attached directrly to motherboard controller, but had the same message. Configuration: M/B Supermicro X7DBE-X, Intel X5410, Adaptec 2820SA (PCI-X). Next: Tried to upgrade successfully installed 7.2 to 8.0. After rebooting with new kernel it can not find root FS and I can not find it too in the list of possible mount devices (i.e. no aacd0s1a, just aacd0a). Assuming you want to completely wipe out your 7.2 installation, you may need to dd a bunch of zeros onto the first few sectors of the disk so that 8.0 can properly re-create the partition. If you do want to keep the existing partitions, then you may be able to do: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/aacd0s1a bs=512 count=1 seek=1 That has usually solved my 7.2 -> 8.0 issues that have the same symptoms as you're describing. BE CAREFUL and make sure you have backups of everything you want to save! Note that this is related to the switch from GEOM_PART_BSD to GEOM_PART_GPT in the kernel. You could also build a custom kernel with GEOM_PART_BSD instead of GEOM_PART_GPT, but my understanding is that support for the former will go away soon. michael From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 1 19:24:48 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FC26106568F; During boot it is detected as: CPU: VIA Esther processor 1000MHz (997.51-MHz 686-class CPU) Origin = "CentaurHauls" Id = 0x6a9 Stepping = 9 Features=0xa7c9baff Features2=0x181 VIA Padlock Features=0x3fcc As far as I understand, this processor should support 64-bit mode and I should be able to boot amd64 FreeBSD. Playing with memstick image for amd64 I get: "CPU doesn't support long mode" As far as I've checked, I'm missing AMDID_LM flag, as the expression from bootinfo64.c: /* Check for long mode. */ do_cpuid(0x80000001, regs); return (regs[3] & AMDID_LM); Returns 0, as regs[3] is 0. As far as I've checked the mailing lists, there was an issue with missing support for CentaurHauls vendor, but this is not the case, as the failing check is later in the code. Do anyone has any experience with this family of processors? Are they different brands (supporting 64-bit mode and not)? I tried to look for some magic settings in BIOS, but none of it looked, like it could change anything here. Any hints?
