In section "15.6.1.4 Upgrading", it details how to perform an upgrade and rebuild world for the jails. Unfortunately, the "skeleton" file set that was described in "15.6.1.2 Creating the Template" isn't referenced and the skeleton files remain unchanged (these are the template files for /etc and such like in the jail, and probably should be updated). Just thought that it should either be detailed, or warned about in the docs. I don't know how they are edited, but if you wish, I'm willing to do the amendments. Best wishes, Peter From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 22 06:38:51 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4E49A1065672 for ; Sun, 22 Feb 2009 06:38:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from minimarmot@gmail.com) Received: from wf-out-1314.google.com (wf-out-1314.google.com [209.85.200.171]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 22A818FC14 for ; Sun, 22 Feb 2009 06:38:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from minimarmot@gmail.com) Received: by wf-out-1314.google.com with SMTP id 27so1606704wfd.7 for ; Sat, 21 Feb 2009 22:38:50 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:in-reply-to:references :date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=JFbWWFcGUPafo4AF3ulzWktMCsLcLby1nJpEAxKC/5Q=; b=Vhwsxxpno9vU+78MZm6XvQqkAOUJSRw4MfdtkXIPwfRmbuVg8EpElfaJ38syZUD8n0 EtRBgh6IU+aS7QubshB7ZfaQdOyucUsqVSJwGCt51PgpnjSR4V+NneDjtngfPFiefRyB iK4WOyi5HvUJ1hegkJvwp4+rUMY7hqYSNfUzk= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=L+yMerwlrmAkBzcq/abdAL1V1Y4lnM9wqHVAvxcMwMic6uNQ6WSwwy5rcOBg1R16CV JO6MAdviFGXgO1Zry1K26NYd0D3rVeErMZ1ohXXcb0gFA1iM75pBetDeYOpxw66WWabR AZL61P5KJvql+xk7yL0mSWbjkerY6xjA+nWJ0= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.143.2.19 with SMTP id e19mr1304259wfi.96.1235283010879; Sat, 21 Feb 2009 22:10:10 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <7731938b0902211810tfa5926dxf064041079fbe90c@mail.gmail.com> References: <7731938b0902211810tfa5926dxf064041079fbe90c@mail.gmail.com> Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 01:10:10 -0500 Message-ID: <47d0403c0902212210s634a21c4i913c05bbaaa7e8cb@mail.gmail.com> From: Ben Kaduk To: Peter Maxwell Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Omission in FreeBSD Handbook documentation (Jails/Application of) X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 06:38:51 -0000 On Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 9:10 PM, Peter Maxwell wrote: > Hi, > > I've used the very useful guide at > http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/jails-application.html > to setup multiple jails on a server, and have just realised there is a > possible ommission (or something that's just been glossed over) in the > guide. > > In section "15.6.1.4 Upgrading", it details how to perform an upgrade > and rebuild world for the jails. Hi Peter, If you're serious about doing the amendments in the "most proper way", you can check out the FreeBSD Documentation Primer, here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/index.html That will show you how to check out the sources for the FreeBSD documentation, and you can make your changes and see how they look, then submit a patch. Of course, that's a lot of work, and we don't expect that out of everyone! Feel free to just write up some text about how you think it should look, and submit a PR with it --- we can take care of the markup if you're not feeling up to it. So two questions: - do we have a nice definition of the MFC process (possibly in a larger release process doc of which I am unaware)? - where should we put a link to this so that it can be found more easily? The port "man2web" gives an error message of "(/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libc.so.6" not found, required by "man2web")" After a couple of hours of frustration, I believe a better solution should be available from your "better minds"... (at lease a search term linked to "libc.so.6") Just WHAT should I be searching for? "linux"?, "freebsd 6"?, "lib.so"?, "???"... The utility "sysinstall" gives no help, nor does maillist searches. A "FAQ" item would be a great help. >How-To-Repeat: Install man2web port under FreeBSD_7.1-RELEASE. >Fix: A "FAQ" entry... Please know, this is NOT an insult in any way on your great work... It shouldn't actually be possible to have ended up in the situation you are in. The port is trying to use libc.so.6, which is a library from FreeBSD 6. - If this machine used to run FreeBSD 6.x and was upgraded through one of the standard methods, you should still have this library, as it won't have been deleted. This would only matter if the port was originally compiled under 6.x, and hasn't been reinstalled since the upgrade to 7.x. - If this machine was upgraded from 6.x to 7.x, and the port was then compiled or otherwise installed, then the port should be linked against libc.so.7, the version of libc supplied with 7.x. - If the machine was a clean install of 7.x then it will have never had a copy of libc.so.6, but that won't matter as the port should never have been linked against it in the first place. The most likely cause is that you are trying to use a 6.x version of the port on a 7.x machine, and either libc.so.6 has been deleted, or it never existed in the first place. So, how did you install the port, and have you upgraded the machine since? In 7.1-REL if you "cd etc/" the "make distribution" fails. It only works from /usr/src now. Maybe take that step out and make a foot-note for "if running version prior to 6.0" would cause less confusion. The man page does not have the "cd etc/" step: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=jail&sektion=8 so no update required there. >How-To-Repeat: Install 7.1-REL and don't skip the "cd etc/" step in: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/jails-build.html. >Fix: Take the "cd etc/" step out and make a foot-note for version prior to 6.0. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 26 03:00:18 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8409A1065680 for ; Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bounces@bounces.jaxtr.com) Received: from smtp154.sv.jaxtr.com (smtp154.sv.jaxtr.com [74.201.86.154]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 638D98FC0A for ; Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bounces@bounces.jaxtr.com) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha1; d=jaxtr.com; s=dkim1024; c=simple/simple; q=dns/txt; i=@jaxtr.com; t=1235617218; h=From:Resent-From; bh=3NlHapBSEWL9eQoS/yTEF8U3aF8=; b=OWMPfCe4eCyRjUewDn2bKU1V9eS4WYHMauq9T/REPY4XIKFstXuv0ab4rd2Texwz dfVg2pxzES7wSMyZP8ID9TrlpbgxOQHE92SSZ8JRG4mDfq7y51AaKx2K1r7T99Ki WBZMRmpopgdydNHBtcKiKcpI1o5IvFunOeYWZ334YDY=; DomainKey-Signature: q=dns; a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; s=dk1024; d=jaxtr.com; h=Received:Resent-From:Date:From:To:Message-ID:Subject:MIME-Version:Content-Type:X-Sysflow; b=RzVf/VA5+u56TqLqxhd/VeGoX7Y6B05GR0LeTRlC0KyylBnSnwrvhMxokmOXdysk ea4w9tYpd33wKtIk7aN62WCtLDQQjw7GF3FUD39CBc7BJMEkHWZToDRxlaywD9Vr 1TBzv8jUWJgDPXQzvMA4Ceny41h8gebHjX/mUkYbQJQ= Received: from [74.201.86.160] ([74.201.86.160:35928] helo=que1.sv.jaxtr.com) by smtp1.sv.jaxtr.com (envelope-from ) (ecelerity 2.2.2.31 r(24168/24420)) with ESMTP id 73/93-19916-2C506A94; Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 +0000 Resent-From: bounces@jaxtr.com Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 +0000 (GMT) From: jaxtr To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <1006506132.3408511235617218106.JavaMail.tomcat@que1.sv.jaxtr.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Sysflow: cv,20090225t2239,ev5982.tawima,331410643 Resent-Message-Id: <20090226030018.638D98FC0A@mx1.freebsd.org> Resent-Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 +0000 (UTC) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Last 3 days of FREE CALLING X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 03:00:18 -0000 Hello preman, We wanted to remind you that you can still double your talk time for FREE with our special Valentine's offer. Clive Craske (Beachdown Festival (RadioReverb Bar), Reverb Roadshow & Cheeky Looks, Glastonbury Festival (Glade stage) The Zero Cash Remix is a real peaktime number that went down a total storm at Cheeky Looks (RadioReverbs new clubnight) when I did my headline set. The time signature changes and distortions sent the crowd wild. Takeshoot is a more predictable number but still with that cut-in-cut-out edginess that makes this EP so unique. (I don't know the exact explanation, I've just looked up the mail archives.) Now, I've made a patch to re-enable it and I've tested this stuff. It seems to be working without any problems on 7.X. I haven't had any opportunity to try it out on -CURRENT, but I've made available the patch for 8-CURRENT. It turns NLS on and adds some new catalog files. I think it would be nice to have this enabled if it seems to be stable, since we have a lot of folks making a good job on translating various FreeBSD documents to other languages and I think it would be great to extend our language support to this new area. I've put the patch here: http://kovesdan.org/patches/nls.diff Sorry for cross-posting to doc@, but there are a lot of translators there, who might be interested in this. While this is probably true (I haven't checked), a far more common reason for getting EPERM is that the firewall denied the packet. If you attempt to use send, sendto or sendmsg and the firewall denies the packet, you'll get EPERM. You can test this by firewalling some IP address and then trying to ping it from the same machine. You'll get "sendto: permission denied" out of ping. I propose the wording be changed to something like: The packet was rejected for sending due to firewall rules on the local machine, or the process using a SOCK_RAW socket was jailed and the source address specified in the IP header did not match the IP address bound to the prison. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 28 11:30:02 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21719106566B for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F1F798FC1A for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n1SBU1XM005100 for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n1SBU1p6005099; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:01 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200902281130.n1SBU1p6005099@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Frank Staals Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B31DE106566B for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:24:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A159F8FC13 for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:24:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n1SBO9mA070786 for ; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:24:09 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n1SBO9C5070779; Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:24:09 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200902281124.n1SBO9C5070779@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:24:09 GMT From: Frank Staals To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.1 Cc: Subject: docs/132193: description in the malo(4) manpage incorrect X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:30:02 -0000 >Number: 132193 >Category: docs >Synopsis: description in the malo(4) manpage incorrect >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sat Feb 28 11:30:01 UTC 2009 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Frank Staals >Release: FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE >Organization: FStaals.net >Environment: FreeBSD Lucy.FStaals.net 7.1-STABLE FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE #0: Sat Feb 28 03:38:16 CET 2009 root@Lucy.FStaals.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 >Description: The text in the description of the malo(4) manpage is incorrect.
