This time I wanted to link linux.ko. The man page for 'linux' suggests to put "options COMPAT_LINUX" in KERNCONF. I did exactly so, only to see build failure. Failure says unknown option COMPAT_LINUX. With little poking around I figured out the options is COMPAT_LINUX32 and this did make sense as only i386 Linux binaries are supported. I guess man page is in error and needs some love. This sentence can be eliminated. "For the loaded firmware to be enabled for use the license at" Should probably be changed to "For the IBM firmware to be enabled for use the license at" Also, the references to ipwfw(4) in the SEE ALSO section should be removed. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 3 22:50:32 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5DB0010656A4 for ; Sun, 3 Jan 2010 22:50:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0314F8FC19 for ; Sun, 3 Jan 2010 22:50:31 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o03MoVTd001406 for ; Sun, 3 Jan 2010 15:50:31 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) with ESMTP id o03MoV7M001403 for ; Sun, 3 Jan 2010 15:50:31 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Sun, 3 Jan 2010 15:50:31 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; format=flowed; charset=US-ASCII X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.3 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Sun, 03 Jan 2010 15:50:31 -0700 (MST) Cc: Subject: ipw(4)/iwi(4) reference obsolete ipwfw(4) X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 03 Jan 2010 22:50:32 -0000 I just submitted a followup to docs/110376 about these outdated references to ipwfw(4). I cannot resolve the phrase "make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL". I know that MYKERNEL refers to the name I give to the new kernel I want to build but neither buildkernel nor installkernel exists in the make command. Can you clear this up for me. I'm trying to add the IPDIVERT option to a new build so I can implement NAT. I cannot seem to figure this out and yes, I am very new to Linux. However, I've been in the computer world since 1977 and have mastered 14 computer languages so I'm not exactly a rookie at these things. This thing though, has got me stumped. Thanks in advance. I know that > MYKERNEL refers to the name I give to the new kernel I want to build but > neither buildkernel nor installkernel exists in the make command. Can you > clear this up for me. I'm trying to add the IPDIVERT option to a new build > so I can implement NAT. I cannot seem to figure this out and yes, I am very > new to Linux. A) This is not Linux, it's FreeBSD. Both are open source Unix operating systems, but they have very different infrastructures. B) As far as I can see you're seriously overthinking this. Let's say that your kernel config file is named FRED. You would do this on the command line: make buildkernel KERNCONF=FRED That's it. It would probably be a lot easier for you to put the following in /etc/src.conf: KERNCONF= FRED You should read 'man src.conf' for more information. C) Unlike Linux, you really don't want to build just the kernel, unless you are sticking with the same set of sources that match the system you already have installed. Then, at minimum you'll still have to build the necessary infrastructure in the object tree to be able to build the kernel. Your best bet is to do 'make buildworld' first, then edit src.conf as described above, then do 'make kernel'. good luck, Doug -- Improve the effectiveness of your Internet presence with a domain name makeover! http://SupersetSolutions.com/ Computers are useless.
