LSI cards I found very clumsy to manage using the cli or web based interface, not to mention the bios. The above are all experiences I had with Raid Cards on FreeBSD since = 5.2. My Favourite is still 3ware 9550 for stability not speed and Areca was = too pricy. Most of what I've decided upon / has been suggested is at http://dan.langille.org/2010/02/10/the-file-server/ In short, I'm pretty much decided upon this case: * Athena Power CA-SWH01BH8 Pedestal case * http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811192058 * contains 2 SATAx4 Hot-Swap HDD bays * sounds like good value for a case with hot swap * got a better case? Various suggestions have been made for the motherboard and HDD. I'm asking you folks for suggestions based on what you know. Here's the list of items to be selected, but feel free to suggest stuff not listed: * mother board * power supply * hard drives * RAM * perhaps a caching SSD If the motherboard lacks the SATA connections, I'm probably going to use the Syba PCI Express SATA II 4 x Ports RAID Controller Card SY-PEX40008: http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Express-Ports-Controller-SY-PEX40008/dp/B002R0DZWQ/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258452902&sr=1-22 Thanks. I would probably go for a SuperWorkstation (www.supermicro.com), like =20= this one for example: = http://www.supermicro.nl/products/system/4U/7046/SYS-7046A-6.cfm It's more expensive, for sure, than a combo of Athena case / MSI =20 board, but it surely rocks. From Newegg, it's $900 : http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101241 Considering the case I wanted is $270. Going with rough guesses: * add PSU - $140 * add M/B - $200 And we're at $610 But the M/B I'm getting with the Supermicro is actually a $500 m/b. > As a cheaper alternative, you might want to consider buying a SuperMicro > (or Tyan) motherboard to put into your Athena case. FreeBSD sees is as a 4-processor motherboard. Its low power consumption is a good candidate for = a quiet case. You can get them for less than USD 100,- with processor in the USA (tax included). You just need to add memory and a disk for a complete system. For my benchmark: it compiles Openoffice in 6 to 7 hours :-) Not bad for a 20W motherboard... We noticed that in VMware (both Workstation and ESX) the SCSI controller is showing up as mpt0... so it seemed only natural to probe it with mptutil. For about 1 second, it looks ok (see below)... but what happened, in fact, is that the VM went down pretty much instantly (nothing on console... no panic, nothing). [root@newercastle ~]# mptutil show adapter mpt0 Adapter: Board Name: 0 Board Assembly: 0 Chip Name: C1030 Chip Revision: 0 Read from remote host 169.254.222.65: Connection reset by peer Connection to 169.254.222.65 closed. Behavior confirmed in both ESX and Workstation. Any help with this would be appreciated. I'd be glad to test patches or whatever. Also FYI, we're working with IBM hardware (xSeries 3550) with an actual mpt-based RAID setup, and am seeing symptoms similar to that described in this thread http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?4B56CD4C.80503 . It actually seemed fine at first (we could create and remove volumes at will, fail drives, etc.) but now most commands except "show adapter" result in segfault. We'll be gathering debug info possibly testing the patch that John Baldwin posted. Preemptive suggestions welcome. All of the above using FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p2. For what it's worth this is the usual response of VMWare to any situation it can't handle - instant VM kill. To its credit, it doesn't appear to affect the host / hypervisor itself. > Behavior confirmed in both ESX and Workstation. Any help with this > would be appreciated. I'd be glad to test patches or whatever. What are you expecting to do with mptutil? Hardware diagnostics itself should be done on the VMWare host side. As the installer runs it notes the presence of /dev/mpt0 and then uses "mptutil show adapter" and other commands to determine type of controller, state of volumes (if appropriate), etc. A perfectly reasonable use-case, in my opinion. But, in general, VMware is an important enough platform that I suggest that mptutil should made to play nice. While it was working properly we created and removed volumes several times, force-failed drives, and just generally put it through its paces... and all seemed fine. Then, after a reboot, it suddenly started failing with segfault as described, and nothing we do has helped to get it out of this state (including trying to use the LSI in-BIOS manager to create/delete volumes -- which in and of itself works fine). We found recent thread http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?4B56CD4C.80503 and hoped that it might somehow relate... and even tried the patch that John Baldwin posted, but to no avail. Has anyone seen this behavior and/or have a suggested fix or workaround? Here's the output of "mptutil show adapter": mpt0 Adapter: Board Name: SR-BR10i Board Assembly: L3-25116-01H Chip Name: C1068E Chip Revision: UNUSED RAID Levels: RAID0, RAID1, RAID1E RAID0 Stripes: 64K RAID1E Stripes: 64K RAID0 Drives/Vol: 1-10 RAID1 Drives/Vol: 2 RAID1E Drives/Vol: 3-10 This work is being done using FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p2 + PAE.
