I got past the no disk found issue by running the livefs cd/dvd and entering into the fixit environment. I used a dd command and ran newfs; then went back into sysinstall on "disk1" and was able to partition/label with no problem (well, the disk was found). However, once I go through and commit the install, after the partitions and labels are created, the machine reboots without warning. I am wondering - a) is that enough info to garner a guess as to the problem? b) how do I capture useful information regarding this event? Thank you, Brett -- B. I think Marcel will be very interested in this. He's been trying to debug this probably for six months now. I don't remember having spontaneous reboots at this point. I'm not sure if newfs is the right tool. You need to create GPT on the disk and then add partitions. All should be done with gpart(8). At what point precisely does the box reboot? Straight after you hit commit? I think the partitions are not really created prior to that point, but I might be wrong. sorry for not being of much use anton -- Anton Shterenlikht Room 2.6, Queen's Building Mech Eng Dept Bristol University University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TR, UK Tel: +44 (0)117 331 5944 Fax: +44 (0)117 929 4423 From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 28 16:24:08 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3993F106567D for ; Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:24:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from estrabd@cs.uh.edu) Received: from x2045.x.rootbsd.net (x2045.x.rootbsd.net [208.86.227.221]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CEB478FC18 for ; Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:24:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from x2045.x.rootbsd.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by x2045.x.rootbsd.net (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o6SGMmxl042425; Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:22:48 GMT (envelope-from estrabd@cs.uh.edu) Received: (from estrabd@localhost) by x2045.x.rootbsd.net (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id o6SGMmZN042424; Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:22:48 GMT (envelope-from estrabd@cs.uh.edu) X-Authentication-Warning: x2045.x.rootbsd.net: estrabd set sender to estrabd@cs.uh.edu using -f Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:22:48 +0000 From: "B. I'll look more into it; it solved the issue of sysinstall not seeing the drive, but it may just have been the initial `dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/da0 count=1` > > At what point precisely does the box reboot? > Straight after you hit commit? It shows sysinstall creating the parition and running newfs - in fact, it appears to finish this process. It is either immediately after or during this process that it reboots. > I think the partitions are not really created > prior to that point, but I might be wrong. On subsequent sysinstall attempts, going to create the labels does show the partitions; they have just not been specified with mount points. For this machine or a general issue? As far as I know several rx2600, rx2620 and rx2660(?) with Madison and Montesito processors are known to be stable. My work rx2600 fbsd server can stay up for months under daily and occasional heavy use. However, we get spontaneous reboots whenever we try to start portscluster build. It booted off the netinst CD and the install appears to have gone through fine. However, when the system rebooted at the end of the install, the EFI menu had not been updated with a FreeBSD boot option. I have never installed FreeBSD onto an ia64 system before, but the other OS I have installed have done that, so I just presume FreeBSD does it as well. I'm not the original owner of this system, so it's very likely that firmware has never been updated. I'm wondering if the firmware currently installed is defective or somehow incompatible with the FreeBSD/ia64 installer such that the boot menu is not getting updated. Also, what's the general recommendation regarding firmware on the rx2600, and are any additional steps required to update the EFI boot menu. For firmware updates, I recommend getting the latest. As for the EFI menu: FreeBSD can be added manually by selecting loader.efi under /boot on the EFI system partition. At the EFI boot menu I selected CDROM. The FreeBSD/ia64 loader displayed. A= fter it loaded the kernel into memory it briefly offered me the opportunity= to select a non-default boot config. I let this pass. The display then transferred from the VGA console to the serial console whe= re standard kernel messages appeared as part of a standard bootup. As I previously had Ubuntu installed on this system, I re-partitioned the d= isk as follows. 0: /efi (default size) 1: swap (16gb, 2xRAM) 2: / (3gb) 3: /var (3gb) 4: /usr (~47gb) I pulled an IP address from DHCP and I enabled IPv6. I selected the Developer install set. I created one non-root account. I enable SSH but no other services. I installed no packages but did install the ports collection. At the end I selected to exit sysinstall which initiated a reboot. That's a rough account of how it went. --- On Fri, 7/30/10, B. Estrade wrote: > From: B.
