But there is OS FreeBSD-8.0 on it (I don`t try this patch on FreeBSD-8.1 yet). Now I haven`t got "GET BUF" error while booting my server. I have completed 3 tests: 1. version of igb divers - 1.7.3 - there are no problems; 2. version of igb divers - 1.7.4 - there are no problems too; 3. version of igb divers - 1.8.4 - there are some problems - I can explore only "yandex.ru" site (maybe another too, but I try to explore mail.ru, speedtest.net, google.com, youtube.com - nothing. But I can ping these sites by DNS-name and can see the replies from this sites through utility "tcpdump"). Very strange. Now I apply this patch on our working server. I hope there are no any problems in production. I can send you result as soon as possibly. Since then I lost the harddisk and the crash-dumps weren't part of my backups. Currently not running a bridged network and Windows 7 clients are fine. And running 8.0-p3 (via 7.2 upgrade).... Was contemplating bridging the wired and wireless networks again. I'll try and find some time to change my configuration and retest on 8.0-p3 first to see if I can reproduce it there. Then I'll try reproducing it on 8.1-RC3 without and with patch. Kind regards, Spil. I. Background An mbuf is a basic unit of memory management in the FreeBSD kernel inter-process communication and networking subsystem. Network packets and socket buffers are dependent on mbufs for their storage. Data can be embedded directly in mbufs, or mbufs can instead reference external buffers. The sendfile(2) system call uses external mbuf storage to directly map the contents of a file into a chain of mbufs for transmission purposes. The mbuf object supports a read-only flag that must be honored to prevent modification or writes to buffer data in cases like these. II. Problem Description The read-only flag is not correctly copied when a mbuf buffer reference is duplicated. When the sendfile(2) system call is used to transmit data over the loopback interface, this can result in the backing pages for the transmitted file being modified, causing data corruption. III. Impact This data corruption can be exploited by an local attacker to escalate their privilege by carefully controlling the corruption of system files. It should be noted that the attacker can corrupt any file they have read access to. NOTE: While systems without untrusted local users are not affected by the security aspects of this issue, the potential for data corruption implies that this should still be treated as a critical erratum. IV. Workaround No workaround is available. V. Solution Perform one of the following: 1) Upgrade your vulnerable system to 7-STABLE or 8-STABLE, or to the RELENG_8_1, RELENG_8_0, RELENG_7_3, or RELENG_7_1 security branch dated after the correction date. 2) To update your vulnerable system via a source code patch: The following patches have been verified to apply to FreeBSD 7.1, 7.3, 8.0 and 8.1 systems. a) Download the relevant patch from the location below, and verify the detached PGP signature using your PGP utility. # fetch http://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-10:07/mbuf.patch # fetch http://security.FreeBSD.org/patches/SA-10:07/mbuf.patch.asc b) Apply the patch. Finally I had some time to look into it (sorry for long delay). 1. Slow start isn't used on recent FreeBSD versions for initial snd_cwnd calculations as long as you have rfc3390 support switched on (default since Jan 06 23:29:46 2004, at least in 7.*). It effectively sets initial snd_cwnd to 3*MSS on common networks and shouldn't cause any problems. Slowstart_flightsize only affects connection restarts. 2. Due to bug in syncache code (patch below) all accepted connections has their snd_cwnd reset to 1*MSS (since r171639, 7.0+ AFAIR). 3. Support for rfc3465 introduced in r187289 uncovered (2) as ACK to SYN/ACK no longer causes snd_cwnd increase by MSS (actually, this increase shouldn't happen as it's explicitly forbidden by rfc 3390, but it's another issue). Snd_cwnd remains really small (1*MSS + 1) and this causes really bad interaction with delayed acks on other side. As a workaround to delayed acks interaction problems you may disable rfc3465 by setting net.inet.tcp.rfc3465 to 0. Correct fix would be to apply the patch below. To Andre Oppermann: could you please take a look at the patch and commit it if found appropriate? # HG changeset patch # User Maxim Dounin # Date 1279028684 -14400 # Node ID 93699203f408fa8e22c971769bde9c26bd14d410 # Parent e2cf8c51a6294a0d09d5628d96c6ab3ab626957e Fix cwnd resetting problem introduced in r171639. The only remaining situation that panics is when plugging it directly into a HP laptop, but it doesn't appear to do so with FreeBSD's default settings. I suspect this is from some non-default setting we use in pfSense, just haven't figured out what that is. The actual e1000 code isn't modified in any way from stock FreeBSD. It's not as easy to trigger with default/normal settings as I initially thought, now trying to figure out what can be changed to make that happen, or what difference in configuration is causing it. A tarbal of the latest sources of > the module is available under I've already emailed you about the alignment warnings. The returned error value is an SNMPv2 error (SNMP_ERR_INCONS_VALUE) which causes v1 requests to error out. Is it at all possible to return something valid if a v1 request is made? snmpwalk'ing to inspect what -is- returned fails, even when querying in v2 mode: BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfaceDot11nRIFS."wlan0" = INTEGER: false(2) BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfaceDot11nShortGI."wlan0" = INTEGER: false(2) BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfaceDot11nSMPSMode."wlan0" = INTEGER: disabled(1) Error in packet. Reason: (genError) A general failure occured Failed object: BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfaceDot11nSMPSMode."wlan0" The daemon logs errors when features aren't supported by the underlying driver (eg querying TDMA stats on a non-TDMA interface.) This may hide any actual underlying issues. It isn't immediately clear which parameters are related to station and which are related to hostap. Eg, wlanIfaceBeaconMissedThreshold. Is that the station threshold or the AP threshold? Would it be worthwhile creating separate branches for different stat types (station, ap, TDMA AP, dot11n stuff, etc, etc?) rather than whacking it all together in one tree? I've not seen binary string indexing values on tables before. Eg: BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfacePeerAddress."wlan0".'...$..'.61 = STRING: 0:11:24:c7:e4:3d BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfacePeerAddress."wlan0".'..#2'.'.219 = STRING: 0:23:32:27:fc:db BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfacePeerAssociationId."wlan0".'...$..'.61 = INTEGER: 2 BEGEMOT-WIRELESS-MIB::wlanIfacePeerAssociationId."wlan0".'..#2'.'.219 = INTEGER: 1 Is that going to be portable to different utilities? Some of the code I've seen (and written!) expect numeric table indexes rather than what I see above.
