Worked great with 9.0-CURRENT (from earlier this month) and version 1.1.2 and 1.1.2_1 of the port. I seem to remember it breaking sometime before (can't remember when) due to an update to 1.2.1 (?). I guess the driver version was downgraded in ports and things worked well again. Intel's killing off non-GEM support slowly and surely, so we have to port GEM or die a slow and painful death on Intel accelerated hardware: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=3Dnews_item&px=3DNjc2NA , http://software.intel.com/sites/oss/project_spotlight.htm . Kind of sad now that anholt is no longer really a contributing member to FreeBSD. Or I suppose I could cough it up to ancient hardware to... ;) The last Intel driver I remember working seamlessly with my i845G with no known side effects and without HAL was 2.3*. After that it somehow became very dependent on HAL and if compiled without HAL would pretty much disable you(being me) from switching from X to the console and back again resulting in a reboot after a borked screen. Just for kicks I installed xfce4-session and ran it. It doesn't require the rest of xfce4 to run. Unfortunately, it worked for me without any error. It even started the sessions I had saved from the time when I was using xfce4. Have you tried deleteing .xfce4, Torfinn? Another point which I should mention is that I did a completely clean install of all my ports when I updated to Xorg 7.5. This guarantees that there isn't any random junk left around. -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 21 11:36:21 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2AE6B106566B; Sun, 21 Mar 2010 11:36:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yanefbsd@gmail.com) Received: from mail-px0-f184.google.com (mail-px0-f184.google.com [209.85.216.184]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6C5D8FC16; Sun, 21 Mar 2010 11:36:20 +0000 (UTC) Received: by pxi14 with SMTP id 14so2768565pxi.15 for ; Sun, 21 Mar 2010 04:36:20 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:in-reply-to:references :date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=6t4uWDnkH2SgZjb4WT4QgGbsbBnu/5aAVz/VUDE3OFs=; b=kkgN6cwX/N1nLXqD/KEhTvwgtJWgxscJzt7GT4N8Bn6QDcY99/Fs38ai1ZH12zKv+f fCMDgwlF+z4PqRMkg+or850JQQUUTBBqN+NSQqj1l1LtO6QsBIvqzwVcnIl7vrvzKsA2 d/s2qW1RM56yil7xIcWemEZGUZ+TVWeC4Tn6M= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=hvOfWiYvUMQvaF+ZZATPMVbMJnO2gR3Nh0Mn7cviGyx26aFPCDauA8XXzRGQbGUttj yv90QxxB7RYEP2pKfKrN7xi/f3F1VF6hld+XcaxsANfkEzXl4ksSLluo/jEo0r9BBn8a 6aFIlZXa92JF2EJFW1cUcrfcJ9yulsn4HYiqQ= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.143.136.7 with SMTP id o7mr416238wfn.101.1269171380341; Sun, 21 Mar 2010 04:36:20 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20100321111419.7a2179f3@ernst.jennejohn.org> References: <20100311134413.GH19740@bsdcrew.de> <20100319110349.1214be6d@ernst.jennejohn.org> <20100320113316.5cebf060@ernst.jennejohn.org> <20100320132603.3ca7292e@ernst.jennejohn.org> <20100321111419.7a2179f3@ernst.jennejohn.org> Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2010 04:36:20 -0700 Message-ID: <7d6fde3d1003210436xa8d0082ld52dec8c2297a757@mail.gmail.com> From: Garrett Cooper To: gary.jennejohn@freenet.de Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: ports@freebsd.org, Jeremy Messenger , Torfinn Ingolfsen , x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [Call for Testing] X.org 7.5 for FreeBSD X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2010 11:36:21 -0000 On Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 3:14 AM, Gary Jennejohn wrote: > On Sat, 20 Mar 2010 12:45:56 -0600 > "Jeremy Messenger" wrote: > >> On Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:47:22 -0600, Torfinn Ingolfsen >> wrote: >> >> > Update >> > >> > On Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 1:26 PM, Gary Jennejohn >> > wrote: >> > >> >> >> >> Well, I don't know whether this is really relevant, but I noticed tha= t >> >> xfce4-session actually depends on dbus-glib and not dbus. =A0It might= be >> >> necessary to reinstall dbus-glib with DBUS_DISABLE_CHECKS set. >> >> >> >> This is easily done by modifying devel/dbus-glib/Makefile to set >> >> --enable-checks=3Dno at line 320. >> >> >> > >> > Ok, I tried that too. They keep removing code and making it that much more difficult to keep things going. The situation that I generally find myself in, is that in order to give radeon users newer/better code, I have to break Intel. You said that X also crashes when this happens, correct? If so, rebuild xorg-server with -DWITH_DEBUG. ssh into the machine and "gdb startx -- :0", or If you can get X running before starting xfce4-session, just attach gdb to the running Xorg server. You must do this from a second machine or you will just lock everything up. When the server exits, your screen will freeze and you will be able to get a backtrace from gdb. Since several other people have already reported success with xfce, I suspect something went wrong during the Xorg upgrade on your machine. Some port(s) might have been built with old headers, old libraries or linked with both old and new libraries. If you don't want to spend any time trying to figure out the exact cause, the one sure-fire way to resolve this is to delete all your packages, then delete everything under /usr/local (backup what you still need!) and reinstall everything. If you do want to figure it out you could look at the output of "ldd /usr/local/bin/xfce4-session" and see if it links to different versions of the same library. I'm running current amd64 with the following patch : drm-radeon-test.patch (the freeze occurs also without this patch) I'm using ati 6.12.4 drivers with xorg 7.5 (IIRC I was having the problem with xorg 7.4 too). I'm unable to get a kernel core dump, the box locks up completely, no reboot, no panic, no ctrl-alt-esc, no remote debugging possible... I have no problems with radeonhd driver, I can restart X multiple times. The same hdd and the same graphic card on an other computer works fine. I have the latest bios available for the problematic computer.
