I would like some coments on this . Have I failed to set up a Library-path somewhere ? Is this a problem for only the AMD64 arhictecture ? Does the javavmwrapper package need to be updated ? Regards Lars Tunkrans Enterprise Unix & Virtualization Fujitsu Sweden. Does not boot on a very standard hardware. I attach lshw in html (all Linux kernel do work and have been for a very, very long time). >Description: I can't boot Free BSD at all. I have pretty much standard computer hardware. Nothing exotic. Just C2D with Intel chipset (ICH8) and NV 8400M GT. I attach "lshw" in html for easier reading. Having tried many, many Linux distros, I AM VERY CURIOUS. But how can I try BSD if it does not work even for the basic hardware? I would like to, but how? Description: After a bunch of code, and loading something from DVD, I am presented for 3s with some options, i.e. the "bootloader choice". Shouldn't it be the other way? First show me what I want to load, and then I chose what to load, and after my choice the system loads? Why is it the other way round? Every Linux distro does this. Should be: 1.Load the options 2.Chose the option from install/live/this kernel/that kernel/this desktop environment/ that desktop environment etc. 3.Then load what I have chosen. 4.Load the system Is: 1.Something loads, arrow is spinning... 2....still loading... 3."bootloader choice" appears for 3s 4.I hit enter (I chose 1st option if I am that fast to catch that 3s gap) 5.The system restarts the computer >How-To-Repeat: study the lshw output. Something is not right with the BSD kernel. >Fix: Fix BSD kernel. For real. Even with a very old Linux kernel. I have never had such issue. Patch attached with submission follows: kernel

What I tried doing (everything as root, so no rights issues...) was to = first manually deinstall my old versions of php4 (and extensions), mysql = 4.0.x and Apache 2.2.x. No problem. Then, I updated the ports tree ('all' collection) using the standard = call: /usr/local/bin/cvsup -g -L 2 /root/ports-supfile Again, no problem and the tree refreshed just fine. Then, the problems started to arise when I tried to 'make' the = mysql55-server port, as it buggered out (regardless of what make target = I used) stating: # cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql55-server # make config "Makefile", line 48: Could not find bsd.port.options.mk make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue After searching using Google I found out that that file should be = present in /usr/share/mk and that it was not there! No idea why it was = missing (I think all, or most of the other ones were there), but copying = it from /usr/porst/Mk to that directory at least resolved this issue. Now then... with all seemingly fine, I tried to make it using the = following call:=20 make INSTALL_MYSQLDATADIR=3D/usr/local/mysql WITH_CHARSET=3Dutf8 = WITH_XCHARSET=3Dall WITH_COLLATION=3Dutf8_unicode_ci install However, it again buggers out, after having downloaded the package. A = 'make clean' also doesn't help. This time it complains about the = checksum. As per the below output: make INSTALL_MYSQLDATADIR=3D/usr/local/mysql WITH_CHARSET=3Dutf8 = WITH_XCHARSET=3Dall WITH_COLLATION=3Dutf8_unicode_ci install =3D=3D=3D> Vulnerability check disabled, database not found =3D=3D=3D> License check disabled, port has not defined LICENSE =3D=3D=3D> Found saved configuration for mysql-server-5.5.9 =3D=3D=3D> Extracting for mysql-server-5.5.9 =3D> No suitable checksum found for mysql-5.5.9.tar.gz. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/databases/mysql55-server. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/databases/mysql55-server. Does this = sound like the mysql-server-5.5.9 port is perhaps flaky, or is my system = messed up or too outdated or so?!? You're not done yet. Your system is no longer supported - meaning the ports tree may expect the system to provide things aren't there on your system, like: > Then, the problems started to arise when I tried to 'make' the mysql55-server port, as it buggered out (regardless of what make target I used) stating: > # cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql55-server > # make config > "Makefile", line 48: Could not find bsd.port.options.mk > make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue > > After searching using Google I found out that that file should be present in /usr/share/mk and that it was not there! In 5.4, ports were checksumed with MD5. Since then, they've pretty much all transitioned to SHA256, and no generally longer bother including the MD5 checksum. 5.4 doesn't have a tool to do SHA256 checksums, so you can't verify the checksum that the port has. > Previously I never had issues such as the above with this system and the ports structure and this is issue nr. 2 already in a single port :( > > Does anyone know what might be going on, and more importantly, how to fix this (if necessary by reinstalling the entire ports tree)? Does this sound like the mysql-server-5.5.9 port is perhaps flaky, or is my system messed up or too outdated or so?!? You got it with the last one. Your system is too outdated to run a current ports tree. FeeBSD 5.4 was EOL'd in 2006, and 5.5 in 2008. You'll should probably update to a supported version of FreeBSD (meaning *at least* 7.3). Alternatively, try checking out a five-year old copy of the ports tree and building with that - but that's *still* unsupported software. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Software developer/SCM consultant, email for more information. No, I'm not going to 'patch it in place' using an old = ports tree. There's nothing of vital importance on the machine, so I can = either go two ways: 1) Upgrade the system. 2) Do a clean install. Nr. 2 is of course a (for me) proven route to success, but how about = upgrading everything: is that easier to do? I presently have a custom = kernel on that machine which was back then necessary for supporting the = DVD burner and (IIRC) the Adaptec 2200s SCSI RAID controller. When doing = a clean install I'll probably have to take the machine out of the server = rack and do all this stuff from home; incl. some nasty sendmail daemon = splitting etc.=20 If a good update mechanism exists that leaves my Sendmail, SVN, Trac, = and some other installations in place, that could be preferrable... Do you know if there are any good guides for this, or is this perhaps a = route that I'd better not take? Thanks again and cheers! No, I'm not going to 'patch it in place' using an old ports tree. There's nothing of vital importance on the machine, so I can either go two ways: > 1) Upgrade the system. > 2) Do a clean install. Well, I understand there's now a binary upgrade path - but you'd have to update your kernconf and rebuild your kernel, and if that kernel is required to talk to part of the system, then you may be stuck. Updating from source is possible, but I don't think skipping releases is recommended, so you'd wind up needing to do multiple updates. But let's look at this: > If a good update mechanism exists that leaves my Sendmail, SVN, Trac, and some other installations in place, that could be preferrable... > Do you know if there are any good guides for this, or is this perhaps a route that I'd better not take? Assuming those are all equally old, there's a fair chance your current configs won't work if you update to current versions of that software anyway. You can run the old versions by installing all the appropriate misc/compat?x ports, but it was wanting to update one of those that started this. Because of things like these, I'm a big fan of doing clean installs. I do them when changing major version. But I do it by dual-booting the system during the process. I'll detach a disk from the root RAID or mirror, install on it, and then rebuild & config things with the old system mounted for reference. This might take a couple of days on production systems, since I have to do this work after hours, rebooting the production system during the day. I then put the new system in production and let the users shake it out before putting the RAID back together based on the new install. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Software developer/SCM consultant, email for more information. So, sorry if it's not the ood one. I had a kernel crash with a 64bits machine running 8.2-RELEASE. The message was: panic: kmem_malloc(1048576): kmem_map too small: 8658309120 total allocated I have 16GB of RAM and sysctl reports vm.kmem_size=3D16624558080. some guys on freebsd-fs mailing list recommends me to grow kmem_map to twice my memory (32GB) for ZFS and I will test that, but the question is why my kernel crashed at around 8GB while kmem_map is set to around 16GB ? Do you have any idea ? Thanks a lot.
