E.g. Gigabyte GA-D510UD. Attempting to boot the system while the USB stick is connected will cause the BIOS to fail - the failure mode depends upon the bug in the BIOS. The Gigabyte GA-D510UD will lock up completely when it runs into a GPT partition table of this kind. The pmbr does not match the CHS setup that the BIOS expects. Related bug: bin/115406: [patch] gpt(8) GPT MBR hangs award BIOS on boot >How-To-Repeat: - Download 9.0-BETA2 USB installation image, install on USB stick - Connect USB stick to system with GPT issues, attempt to boot the system - Boot fails Compare this to the 8.2-RELEASE image, which uses MBR and thus boots correctly. >Fix: This problem can only be fixed by trying to circumvent the buggy BIOSes. The most reliable way would be to revert the USB image to MBR format. Another alternative is to ensure that the pmbr of the GPT partition table contains a correct CHS configuration, but the GPT pmbr may still cause problems on some BIOSes. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 18 14:46:00 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E94D71065673; Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C09618FC13; Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:00 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p8IEk0xq004975; Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:00 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p8IEk0uN004970; Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:00 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:00 GMT Message-Id: <201109181446.p8IEk0uN004970@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org From: linimon@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: kern/160802: [install] USB installation image fails to boot if BIOS is not GPT compatible - 9.0-BETA2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2011 14:46:01 -0000 Old Synopsis: USB installation image fails to boot if BIOS is not GPT compatible - 9.0-BETA2 New Synopsis: [install] USB installation image fails to boot if BIOS is not GPT compatible - 9.0-BETA2 Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-amd64->freebsd-bugs Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Sun Sep 18 14:44:50 UTC 2011 Responsible-Changed-Why: Problem most likely affects more than just amd64. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=160802 From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 19 11:06:59 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6B79106567D for ; Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:06:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBF688FC0C for ; Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:06:59 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p8JB6xnr073428 for ; Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:06:59 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p8JB6xP9073426 for freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:06:59 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:06:59 GMT Message-Id: <201109191106.p8JB6xP9073426@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:07:00 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). Unfortunately fixing this issue by installing zfsboot from 9.0-BETA2 was a surprising amount of work, because of an incompatibility between the 9.0 USB installer GPT and the BIOS on this system. It took quite a while to recognize the root cause for that one. I simply cannot boot the system in question with the GPT pmbr used on the memstick of 9.0. The BIOS locks completely. I am very reluctant to risk breaking my currently running system, the previous boot failure caused almost two weeks of downtime. Does the 8.2-stable memstick image still use MBR? If so, I could conceivably try to copy the 9.0 zfsboot version to the 8.2-stable memstick and test both.
