I wonder if there's a way we > can improve the documentation to make it clear that these values aren't > necessarily preprocessor definitions? o Use the braces in the thousands of places that they are needed instead of in only a few places. o Document them in intro.2 if not already. o Remove the compile-time constant values, especially for things like {OPEN_MAX} which were never constant in BSD, so that things break properly when variables are misspelled as constants It would be nauseating to expand {FOO_MAX} in the thousands of places where the limit might be variable. > I've attached a patch to sysconf(3) which adds documentation of > {HOST_NAME_MAX} and others. The patch also replaces "cpu" by "machine". But "machine" is similar to "cpu" and is identical with the CPU name in many contexts, e.g.: - the MACHINE make variable on i386 systems, er machines, is i386 - for uname(1): - uname -m gives the machine name, which is something like i386 - uname -p gives the machine processor name, which is also something like i386 - uname -n gives the system name, which is normally the host name So gethostname(2) returns a system name, not a machine name, according to the terminology of uname(1). POSIX doesn't use this terminology for gethostname() however. The host name can be anything you want, although other entities may want it to be what they want or what it was. Changing it from my fake internet domain name to i386 works here according to hostname(1). I didn't keep this setting for long or test it with other entities. The details of what uname -n returns are undocumented in in uname(1), but uname(3) and says that the struct member `nodename' contains the "Network [node] name". POSIX says that `nodename' contains the "name of this node within an implementation-defined communications network". But uname(1) is not required to print the same strings that struct utsname holds, except as en extension, since there are large unportabilities in this area. The part with reflections in the red ball is all screwed. Gimp says something like "error line 16: entity name is unknown" when opening. Rendering in firefox or internet explorer do the same thing. I downloaded the svg several times to see if it was not corrupt. So I think there is a problem with the .svg on the site, and thought someone have to tell you about it. BTW, you are doing a great job supporting and promoting FreeBSD. Thanks for this. P.S. : included a png showing the rendering in gimp -- Johan VAUCOURT ********************************* This message and any attachments (the "message") are confidential and intended solely for the addressees. I don't know of a better one. I wouldn't worry too much about the downloads either. It's a public web server, hosting a utility that is supposed to be *useful* to people. The number of FreeBSD users who will download this are going to be a _subset_ of all the users who install FreeBSD, so what sort of user are we looking at? A few thousands every year? I'm guessing pretty much any modern web server can handle that load and not even blink. As you mentioned, TCP|UDP|SCTP can initiate this rate-limiting function. Yet, all possible replies that this code handles are either ICMP or TCP. For example the current code does not handle SCTP ABORT, it *does* handle the case of an ICMP response generated by SCTP. There must be some other problem, either with the way you checkout the files or with your environment. Normally, I build using this method (which requires having a local mirror of the cvs repo): http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/fdp-primer/the-website.html#THE-WEBSITE-CVSUP But you may also use the simple csup method here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/fdp-primer/the-website.html#THE-WEBSITE-CSUP (as I recall, this was my write up...) I tried this on my second system today and it stopped because CVSROOT was pointing to some non-existent directory (leftover in my environemt). But setting CVSROOT to the same directory as the checked out files worked fine. So, just for testing, and to rule out any software problem, try using this sample supfile: *default host=cvsup10.FreeBSD.org *default base=/var/db *default prefix=/home/eitan/build *default release=cvs tag=. *default delete use-rel-suffix *default compress doc-all www ports-base (Note: you may have to run csup as root or adjust permissions on /var/db/sup to run as user. In any case just do a chown -R eitan ~/build to make sure you can write there) Then (assuming bash) export CVSROOT=/home/eitan/build cd ~/build/www/en make all and it should all work fine.
