And it's very easy to search successfully the interwebs for this particular distfile. In such a case I see no reason to remove the port if it works (under condition one gets the distfile). I myself have it (and I even host it privately). And reading mailing lists reveals there are many people using the port. In regards to new Skype version -- it's not available yet and from what I know it needs PulseAudio which may be a drawback for many. I personally would prefer this classic OSS version. So pls do not deprecate and surely do not remove the port! The thing is that it's not only about myself -- whenever I would install FreeBSD (or PC-BSD) to someone and they would ask about Skype (which is very often) I would have to get the old port and distfile, which complicates things just a bit more. Also new users checking on what FreeBSD provides find that Skype is deprecated and that may be one more reason for them to avoid FreeBSD. I believe the project should make it easier, not more difficult, for people to get onboard. Even Linux distributions that want to keep their main repos clean of non-free software have "problematic" stuff in a "non-free" repo easily available. It is not general policy to allow manual fetches unless a seriously major (ie Java) component requires it. Skype does not fit that mould; there are plenty of viable alternatives. I'm not trying to brush you off; I'm just pointing out that the Project will not deliberately breach licensing conditions to make things easier for new users, neither is there a 'probably broken' part of the Ports tree -- the closest thing to a different repo is a separate tree, for example [1]. Again, if you want skype, go on skype's forums and bug them about supporting FreeBSD or at least OSS suport. I somehow thought my linux-v4l2-8-test.patch would also apply on 8.2 but of course it doesn't so I now also made q&d versions for that version: http://people.freebsd.org/~nox/dvb/linux-v4l2-8.2-test.patch and the same with Linux 2.6.17 videodev2.h: http://people.freebsd.org/~nox/dvb/linux-v4l2-2.6.17-8.2-test.patch And I also don't want to keep back ae@'s version which builds as a seperate kld the way I did it for the Linuxolator dvb handler that is now in ports as multimedia/linux_dvbwrapper-kmod: http://people.freebsd.org/~ae/linux_v4l2_kld.tgz Maybe we should turn this into a port too for easy user installation until the patches get committed and for people on (current) releases? (See http://people.freebsd.org/~nox/dvb/ for the others versions.) I now tested skype 2.1.0.81 on 8.2 with the above patch and avg@'s sys/dev/sound/pcm/dsp.c one-line patch [1], and found sound doesn't work when running skype from nfs without locking (wtf!), after extracting the skype tarball [2] locally it started working. I installed these ports: multimedia/webcamd net/skype (for the deps [3]) audio/linux-f10-alsa-plugins-oss (if you use the default /compat/linux/etc/asound.conf don't forget to switch skype's audio input/outputs from `default' to `oss', and if your mic isn't on the default soundcard you also need to add that to the Linux config [4] ^ and select it in skype) audio/alsa-plugins (I already had it installed among other things, might not actually be needed) dns/linux-f10-libasyncns multimedia/linux-f10-libv4l (for the Linux v4l2convert.so that my cam needs) And again I ran skype out of the extracted tarball: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so ./skype_static-2.1.0.81/skype --resources=$PWD/skype_static-2.1.0.81 (I also tested the latest beta [5] using a pcbsd 9.0 liveusb snapshot but it still didn't want to work for me, something about kwm@'s setup must really be `special', he's the only one I know of that has it working...) I committed the patch to -current. MFC after a month. I didn't bump the FreeBSD revision, so if you want to provide a v4l2 kld, there is no way to know if the kernel has support already or not (but as this is -current, I would say people should update and the port should work only for <9). You could "fix" this by creating an sglist (via sglist_build()) and an OBJT_SG VM object that the d_mmap_single callback returned. I wish there was a cleaner way to just create a VM object and populate it with pages though, and then use vm_map_insert() to map it into the kernel rather than the more roundabout method of OBJT_SG. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 6 22:16:15 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A774106566B; Fri, 6 May 2011 22:16:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nox@jelal.kn-bremen.de) Received: from smtp.kn-bremen.de (gelbbaer.kn-bremen.de [78.46.108.116]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 373A88FC17; Fri, 6 May 2011 22:16:14 +0000 (UTC) Received: by smtp.kn-bremen.de (Postfix, from userid 10) id C523C1E00231; Sat, 7 May 2011 00:16:13 +0200 (CEST) Received: from triton8.kn-bremen.de (noident@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by triton8.kn-bremen.de (8.14.4/8.14.3) with ESMTP id p46LMaq5022982; Fri, 6 May 2011 23:22:36 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from nox@triton8.kn-bremen.de) Received: (from nox@localhost) by triton8.kn-bremen.de (8.14.4/8.14.3/Submit) id p46LMaRR022981; Fri, 6 May 2011 23:22:36 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from nox) From: Juergen Lock Date: Fri, 6 May 2011 23:22:36 +0200 To: Juergen Lock Message-ID: <20110506212236.GA22733@triton8.kn-bremen.de> References: <20110503215642.GA26299@triton8.kn-bremen.de> <20110504111252.11606aa6la3gcsso@webmail.leidinger.net> <4DC11B6D.7000205@yandex.ru> <20110504115312.223533eznfjofcow@webmail.leidinger.net> <20110504182740.GB58980@triton8.kn-bremen.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20110504182740.GB58980@triton8.kn-bremen.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Cc: kwm@FreeBSD.org, Alexander Leidinger , hselasky@FreeBSD.org, avg@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.org, ae@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: skype 2.1.0.81; alternate versions of the Linuxolator v4l2 patches X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 06 May 2011 22:16:15 -0000 On Wed, May 04, 2011 at 08:27:40PM +0200, Juergen Lock wrote: > On Wed, May 04, 2011 at 11:53:12AM +0200, Alexander Leidinger wrote: > > > > Quoting "Andrey V. The grabber is great, but unfortunately it only has listings for a limited number of the TV channels available here. So, I use the tv_grab_no grabber in addition. It is old, the author has deprecated it, and you must write the config file manually[1] because the "get channels" doesn't work anymore. But - tv_grab_no works, and it has more channels than tv_grab_no_gfeed. Attached is two patches which does the following: - re-enables the tv_grab_no grabber - corrects the URL the grabber uses - adds a some more channels to the grabber Simply put the two files in the ./files directory (yes, patch-Makefile.PL replaces the one currently there) and your port is updated. I haven't fixed pkg-plist, but that should be simple enough. Any interest in updating the port with this? References: 1) the web site changed, the new URL is http://www.dagbladet.no/mobil/tv/ and I can't figure out how to get a listing of available channels from it. -- Regards, Torfinn Ingolfsen --20cf3071ca6a04407d04a2a436e3 Content-Type: application/octet-stream;
