I've found that it's definitely due to the compiled in sound.ko; no panic if I remove those options from my kernel config (which unfortunately means I can no longer use freebsd-update for my kernel) I'm not overly concerned about my own position, but there are two options for how we could fix this: - Revert r222980 and go back to requiring people to kldload the correct drivers (ouch :() - Add a note to pkg-message (perhaps even require confirmation-- panics aren't good!) about the need to compile a kernel with no sound driver added Chris http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/sys/amd64/conf/GENERIC?revision=222980&view=markup From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 28 07:39:38 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F228C106566C; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 07:39:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@freebsd.org) Received: from mail.vnode.se (mail.vnode.se [62.119.52.80]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A14F98FC17; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 07:39:38 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail.vnode.se (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.vnode.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2441AE3F07A; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 08:21:39 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at vnode.se Received: from mail.vnode.se ([127.0.0.1]) by mail.vnode.se (mail.vnode.se [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id AhSGst5ZSIGQ; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 08:21:35 +0100 (CET) Received: from goofy01.vnodelab.local (unknown [212.247.52.12]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mail.vnode.se (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 3206AE3F079; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 08:21:32 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 08:21:26 +0100 From: Joel Dahl To: Chris Rees Message-ID: <20111228072126.GH40260@goofy01.vnodelab.local> References: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Cc: re@freebsd.org, rwatson@freebsd.org, multimedia@freebsd.org, Jung-uk Kim Subject: Re: Enabling sound by default (Was: svn commit: r222980 - in head/sys: amd64/conf i386/conf) X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 07:39:39 -0000 On 27-12-2011 11:51, Chris Rees wrote: > Hi all, > > While I can certainly see the strong argument for sound 'working out > of the box', it unfortunately causes panics if one then tries to > kldload osscore.ko from audio/oss. > > I've found that it's definitely due to the compiled in sound.ko; no > panic if I remove those options from my kernel config (which > unfortunately means I can no longer use freebsd-update for my kernel) > > I'm not overly concerned about my own position, but there are two > options for how we could fix this: > > - Revert r222980 and go back to requiring people to kldload the > correct drivers (ouch :() > > - Add a note to pkg-message (perhaps even require confirmation-- > panics aren't good!) about the need to compile a kernel with no sound > driver added I had to give this some thought before replying because I haven't used audio/oss since 2007 (we've had our own audio sub-system for 15 years after all :-). Anyway, I remember me and ariff@ talking about how OSS had become close to invisible back in 2006, and shortly after that they released the code and triple licensed it in a last desperate move. Now, it took us more than 6 months (after it was enabled in GENERIC) to notice that OSS didn't work, which I suspect is some kind of proof that almost no one is using it anymore. I also suspect it requires some re-engineering, because I don't think it can co-exist with our own in it's current form (it's a completely different audio sub-system after all, and not just a bunch of drivers). Anyway, if anyone wants it they can recompile their kernel. My opinion is that it's more important that everyone has working audio. I'm not a ports committer, but maybe your suggestion about requiring confirmation while installing the port is a good idea. Anyway, I'd be happy to contribute to such a solution here. :-) -- Joel From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 28 11:36:17 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 62C321065673; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 11:36:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from utisoft@gmail.com) Received: from mail-iy0-f182.google.com (mail-iy0-f182.google.com [209.85.210.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E9EDB8FC15; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 11:36:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: by iadj38 with SMTP id j38so27188374iad.13 for ; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 03:36:16 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-type; bh=1wp0ChKZdvyUkAaEYvq/WEpDGqni3LhBKcqwth/MZDo=; b=Aaxw4uKTTrciDd6nKsWPMhk0p4aea5M5K2RqiISypZIRWZrkAMF0sTfc13RqxSmjG9 RbpVkgvvsNGXcjRGSfGrgNck+vFDyAqg6Ov3CARutD23kC1U5UieaceshTiaZXpsAc1n 5VkW46fY5g5VKgHKstY9zfk4sorJNQHsXUttI= Received: by 10.43.51.69 with SMTP id vh5mr36979583icb.32.1325072176273; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 03:36:16 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.231.207.7 with HTTP; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 03:35:45 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <20111228072126.GH40260@goofy01.vnodelab.local> References: <20111228072126.GH40260@goofy01.vnodelab.local> From: Chris Rees Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 11:35:45 +0000 Message-ID: To: Joel Dahl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Cc: re@freebsd.org, rwatson@freebsd.org, multimedia@freebsd.org, Jung-uk Kim Subject: Re: Enabling sound by default (Was: svn commit: r222980 - in head/sys: amd64/conf i386/conf) X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 11:36:17 -0000 On 28 December 2011 07:21, Joel Dahl wrote: > On 27-12-2011 11:51, Chris Rees wrote: >> Hi all, >> >> While I can certainly see the strong argument for sound 'working out >> of the box', it unfortunately causes panics if one then tries to >> kldload osscore.ko from audio/oss. >> >> I've found that it's definitely due to the compiled in sound.ko; no >> panic if I remove those options from my kernel config (which >> unfortunately means I can no longer use freebsd-update for my kernel) >> >> I'm not overly concerned about my own position, but there are two >> options for how we could fix this: >> >> - Revert r222980 and go back to requiring people to kldload the >> correct drivers (ouch :() >> >> - Add a note to pkg-message (perhaps even require confirmation-- >> panics aren't good!) about the need to compile a kernel with no sound >> driver added > > I had to give this some thought before replying because I haven't used > audio/oss since 2007 (we've had our own audio sub-system for 15 years after > all :-). S'ok though, I'm learning how to hack kernel modules as we speak, so I'll talk to hackers@ on how to check for sound.ko before loading osscore.ko :) Chris From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 29 00:28:07 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4EF761065670 for ; Thu, 29 Dec 2011 00:28:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from julian@freebsd.org) Received: from vps1.elischer.org (vps1.elischer.org [204.109.63.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0B3BD8FC12 for ; Thu, 29 Dec 2011 00:28:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: from julian-mac.elischer.org (c-67-180-24-15.hsd1.ca.comcast.net [67.180.24.15]) (authenticated bits=0) by vps1.elischer.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id pBT02NFA056727 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO) for ; Wed, 28 Dec 2011 16:02:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from julian@freebsd.org) Message-ID: <4EFBAE38.9030309@freebsd.org> Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 16:03:04 -0800 From: Julian Elischer User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.2.25) Gecko/20111213 Thunderbird/3.1.17 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: multimedia@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: how do I work out what sound modules I need? This may be understood by removing case and inspecting connection points visually . If there are connections to the main board , but they are not recognized by pciconf , it means that they are not conforming to PCI definitions ( main board may be an old model , having ISA ports ) . If you know producer and model of the main board , its producer web site may contain main board definition . If such a definition does not exist in the producer site , searching internet may bring archived pages . If the main board is an old model , trying previous FreeBSD releases ( 7.x , 6.x , 5.x , ... ) may reveal what is on it , because it is very likely that previous FreeBSD releases will be able to identify their ports . Thank you very much . A heavily revised version can be found on http://www.rrr.de/~riggs/mplayer/m20111230.tar.bz2 Changes: - reduce the number of explicit --enable- where it seemed reasonable, hence deviate less from the intention of the configure script - remove patching and reinplacing homegrown tweaks whenever possible, hence deviate less from the intention of the configure script - fix the reported pthread issue - always use internal libass - adopt patches to support 24 bit OSS output and keep volume during seek - use newer gcc and binutils thus enabling significant speed-ups (and also, since most mplayer and ffmpeg development is done on newer gcc and binutils than we have in the base system, it's slowly getting tedious to ensure compatibility with older toolchain) Caveats: - bluray does not work right now -> keep it/turn it off in OPTIONS for now I hope the refactoring (removing mostly) of the tweaks to the configure and build environment does not impose noticeable changes for most users, but we may encounter difficulties in some configurations I couldn't check. Please give it a try! As always, comments, suggestions and especially patches are more than welcome. Haven't used the program in a while so this is all from memory, most of what i remember was from one year ago when i interacted with the author regarding freebsd compatibility and the x11-grabber module. i think hitting 'h' on the screen gives you the list of commands, and something like 'dial sip/user@ip-address' should connect to the remote party. you can configure the audio/video sources from the config file (which modules, file or device names, resolution, data rates). at the time, there was no good control on the video bandwidth (i blame the ffmpeg libraries, which have no well documented way to set rate limitations; there must be one, as vlc figures it our, but we haven't been able to find the right magic). given that baresip uses SIP, you should even be able to interact with other SIP softphones such as XLite (i am using it on a Mac), see www.coounterpath.org. cheers luigi > > in any case, thanks for yor help so far > > matthias > > -- > Matthias Apitz > e - w http://www.unixarea.de/ > UNIX since V7 on PDP-11, UNIX on mainframe since ESER 1055 (IBM /370) > UNIX on x86 since SVR4.2 UnixWare 2.1.2, FreeBSD since 2.2.5 From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 30 17:02:35 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 127A61065670 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:02:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from Mathias.Picker@virtual-earth.de) Received: from www94.your-server.de (www94.your-server.de [213.133.104.94]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C36B08FC14 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:02:34 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [92.230.74.117] (helo=[192.168.178.33]) by www94.your-server.de with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1RgfaM-0008LQ-3w for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:45:38 +0100 From: Mathias Picker To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Organization: virtual earth GmbH Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:45:31 +0100 Message-ID: <1325263531.4997.4.camel@localhost> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.32.1 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Authenticated-Sender: Mathias.Picker@virtual-earth.de X-Virus-Scanned: Clear (ClamAV 0.97.3/14211/Fri Dec 30 16:14:02 2011) Subject: M-Audio Oxygen 49: snd_uaudio cycles (loads, detaches, loads.... ad infinitum) X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:02:35 -0000 I just got an 3rd gen oxygen 49 midi master keyboard, which is class compliant. If the sysctl is not there you need to have "options USB_DEBUG" in your kernel config. --HPS From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 30 17:19:41 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 068661065672; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:19:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lichray@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ee0-f54.google.com (mail-ee0-f54.google.com [74.125.83.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 642508FC1B; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:19:39 +0000 (UTC) Received: by eekc50 with SMTP id c50so16586272eek.13 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 09:19:39 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=OYkPD/SbxydK9xI4vNSm4mn1UWmK1DR78hK8dJQ8jkw=; b=gJqhzYXWBRZPUYkjyERgwxpdWp9ZgjIbvnX0pAd7Zz7tDdBSmis6SELEVKd0ZWOwmk tWMXyKOHeYMO+apdqAICCd/FAXlCURtIgTixgqrV2O7WY35RsY9OclVtnQNHpInyyckJ uC5v/MQLBIM0Ghw0qD0AGi0F0lqCLAKOI7PTo= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.14.3.232 with SMTP id 80mr15866148eeh.2.1325265578968; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 09:19:38 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.14.99.70 with HTTP; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 09:19:38 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <1RgYky-000K9a-37@internal.tormail.net> References: <1RgRmj-000BMS-6c@internal.tormail.net> <1RgYky-000K9a-37@internal.tormail.net> Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 11:19:38 -0600 Message-ID: From: Zhihao Yuan To: Jan Beich Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: FreeBSD - Ports , multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: CFT: mplayer and mencoder updates X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 17:19:41 -0000 On Fri, Dec 30, 2011 at 3:27 AM, Jan Beich wrote: > Zhihao Yuan writes: > >>> Zhihao Yuan writes: >>> >>>> On Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 6:07 PM, Thomas Zander >>>> wrote: >>>>> Hi, >>>>> >>>>> thank you all for your comments on the first iteration of the ports. >>>>> A heavily revised version can be found on >>>>> http://www.rrr.de/~riggs/mplayer/m20111230.tar.bz2 >>>>> >>>>> Changes: >>> [...] >>>>> - use newer gcc and binutils thus enabling significant speed-ups (and >>>>> also, since most mplayer and ffmpeg development is done on newer gcc >>>>> and binutils than we have in the base system, it's slowly getting >>>>> tedious to ensure compatibility with older toolchain) >>> >>> So, with the new toolchain --disable-ssse3 is dropped but why >>> BROKEN_RELOCATIONS is still there? >>> >>>> >>>> GJ. Since it is still December 30 today, the URL stays the same, simply the content has been updated: http://www.rrr.de/~riggs/mplayer/m20111230.tar.bz2 Changes: - Remove the patch for BROKEN_RELOCATIONS (thanks Jan for the heads-up) - bluray actually does work with http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=163721 (not a real change, but noteworthy) Regarding the dependency on gcc46. I'll make some tests whether to keep supporting builds with the base system gcc for those who don't wish to install gcc from ports is doable. In other words it is not fully USB compliant. I'm not sure how we can avoid this. Remind me of this issue after New-year, and I'll see if we can make a patch! >=20 > And now: Godt nytt =C3=A5r! > (if that's not to early, my norwegian is non-existant ;) Thanks! Sets USE_GCC?=4.6 and depends on recent binutils so that all optimisations can be used. clang-friends can tweak that to their desire. If this switch is turned off, the Makefile assumes the base system gcc should be used and applies extra-patch-base_system_gcc to allow build (minus a few optimisations). Caveat: - It's late. I have tested this with some content on amd64 and i386 on 8/stable but YMMV. Please test and report problems. Best regards Riggs
