the notebook has twographic cards, - intel integrated graphics controller, identified as vgapci1@pci0:0:2:0: class=0x030000 card=0x397d17aa chip=0x01168086 rev=0x09 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller' class = display subclass = VGA - nvidia GeForce GT 520M card I've tried different combinartions (properly specifying BusID for each card), but - the intel card isn't recognized neither with x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel nor x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel29 - the nvidia card isn't handled by x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv (i suppose for noveau the result will be the same) - trying to install the x11/nvidia-driver gives no luck - the machine hangs on initialization, after Xorg logs stuff has appeared in the console, but before the videomode has changed (with GENERIC kernel, i've tried both the driver verson from the ports and manually updating the port to version 275.19) - VESA driver works both with Nvidia and Intel cards, but it gives the maximal screen resolution of 800x600, way to small. The display resolution is 1366x768, but the driver says there's "no mode for this name", same for the standard 1024x768. Did anyone try to make the same setup work? Is there any way to make nvidia drivers work for me? Or at least how to force VESA driver use 1366x768 mode for usable workspace? If so, it simply will not work with xorg. The Optimus version of nVidia graphics lack any frame buffer. They only do GPU off-load and still use the frame buffer of the Intel graphics. nVidia has clearly stated that they will not support Optimus for Linux, Unix or anything other than Windows. An attempt to develop open-source support for it is underway, but I have no doea when it might be available. If you have an "Optimus", you need to disable it on BIOS so you only have the Intel GPU and wait for GEM/KMS. I have had no luck getting VESA to provide any widescreen modes with the Intel GPU. --=20 R. How do they do that? I had a look in the .xkm files. They include a X font definition: -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 with ISO 8859-1 aka Latin 1. I have a UTF-8 locale! I also checked in the generated Postscript that xkbprint spits out, and sure enough, there are definitions to recode Latin 1 to Postscript's internal character set. So, as long as the characters I define on my keyboard are defined in Latin 1, I can work around the problem by providing a Latin 1 locale to xkbprint with: -lc en_US.ISO8859-1 I still have the problem trying to get 0x1d from pressing Control-Ã¥, though. -- http://hack.org/mc/ Use plain text e-mail, please. A friend pointed out that Control-5 generates 0x1d in the standard pc+se XKB layout. It does! This is what I want, but on another key. I've tried to look where this is defined but so far no luck. In symbols/latin all I find is key { [ 5, percent, onehalf, cent ] }; which doesn't explain the behaviour. The only image I see on loading the game is a 10mm sq box in the bottom lef= t corner of the wine window. As the game had worked flawlessly before I upgraded I thought I'd try nvidi= a 256.53 and nvidia 275.40.19, no joy. I then tried 6 or 7 versions of wine f= rom the mediafire repo, no joy. I installed wine via the chroot method per the freebsd wiki, no luck with t= hat either. On another HDD I installed 9.0-CURRENT, setup xorg+wmii via packages and ha= d the same result as above. Finally I put 8.2-RELEASE on another HDD, pulled in xorg+wmii via packages = and the game worked straight away. 8.2-STABLE and 9.0-CURRENT share the same xorg version 1.7.7_1,1 while 8.2-RELEASE has xorg 1.7.5_1,1 Games that can use OpenGL do work on 1.7.5_1,1 but don't on 1.7.7_1,1 Any ideas? Looking on xf86-input-mouse, I've found that it includes some code to support USB HID pointing devices directly using libusbhid library. But that code seemed like newer worked (at least on FreeBSD) and is quite limited. Same time that approach would allow us to override different limitation, now imposed by sysmouse protocol. For example, to support absolute coordinates, pressure force, multiple touches, etc. I've made a patch, rewriting it to support wide range of pointing devices. I've tested it with few mouses, digitizer and two touchscreens. To use it, you may: 1. Update installed packages to have x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse of the version 1.6.0. 2. Download patch http://people.freebsd.org/~mav/patch-zz-input-mouse8 and put it into /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse/files 3. Rebuild and reinstall the driver. 4. Release the pointing device of ums driver, if needed (build kernel without ums). Device should be reported as uhidX. 5. Add to Xorg configuration: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Panel1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "usb" Option "Device" "/dev/uhidX" EndSection ... Section "ServerLayout" ... InputDevice "Panel1" ... EndSection Some HID devices provide several first-level logical collections (subdevices), supported by the driver. In that case several of above devices should be added with different Identifier but same Device. For example, my Asus T101MT laptop's touchscreen has two usable logical collections: multi-touch touchscreen and it's mouse emulation. 6. In different operation modes device may report events via different of these collections. Due to present uhid(4) driver API limitation, it is impossible for the driver to switch them now. The only way now is to switch them directly via libusb with command line usbconfig -u 1 -a 3 do_request 0x21 0x09 0x0305 0x0000 0x0002 0x05 0x0Z where Z is value from 0 to 2, where 0 is a mouse emulation, 1 is a single-touch touch-screen and 2 -- native mode. And 05 is a feature report ID that includes the switch for my touchscreen. 7. Due to missing multitouch support in present Xorg (XInput 2.1 required), multiple touches are now mapped to right button press now. As any other button, it can be mapped to mouse wheel emulation by adding into the device section: Option "EmulateWheel" "on" Option "EmulateWheelButton" "3" <- right button Option "EmulateWheelInertia" "500" <- this may be tuned Option "XAxisMapping" "7 6" Option "YAxisMapping" "5 4" It allows to scroll with two fingers. 8. I was experimenting with a hack, mapping multiple touches into different pointers, using Multi-Pointer X technology, added from present Xinput 2.0. I indeed successfully had several separate pointers on screen, so multitouch touch screen itself is working fine. But I haven't found any practical use for it. If somebody heard about any application that has some useful support for MPX -- tell me please. I am not sure it will be the permanent solution and what are the chances to commit it upstream now. I am thinking about further changes at kernel level to implement it other way. But for existing systems I think it is an acceptable way to go. On any problems, send me Xorg.0.log and `usbhidctl -f /dev/uhidX -r` outputs. Thank you. Comments welcome. -- Alexander Motin From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 19 15:19:09 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 939521065679; Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kwm@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6AD8E8FC21; Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p6JFJ9Ij043930; Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 GMT (envelope-from kwm@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from kwm@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p6JFJ9n1043926; Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 GMT (envelope-from kwm) Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 GMT Message-Id: <201107191519.p6JFJ9n1043926@freefall.freebsd.org> To: wblock@wonkity.com, kwm@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org From: kwm@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: ports/157572: [patch] update x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati to 6.14.2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2011 15:19:09 -0000 Synopsis: [patch] update x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati to 6.14.2 State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: kwm State-Changed-When: Tue Jul 19 15:18:46 UTC 2011 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks. I don't think either of these addresses my use case, which is installing a port (or some ports) without a full checkout, but having those few ports individually checked out into one directory. I upgraded xorg to the latest port version, after updating the port tree with portupgrade -PRrvab. The laptop seems to have two graphics devices. See Xorg.0.log, below. The BIOS will not allow disabling either graphics device. With no xorg.config, startx fails, with error messages. Searching for this situation results in an indication that this device configuration is not supported. I created an xorg.conf.new with Xorg -configure. Xorg -config xorg.conf.new blanks the screen and the does nothing. Xorg -config xorg.conf.new screen='Screen0' fails with a blank screen Xorg -config xorg.conf.new screen='Screen1' fails with a blank screen I changed the driver to vesa in both sections. Xorg -config xorg.conf.new screen='Screen0' fails with a blank screen Xorg -config xorg.conf.new screen='Screen01 fails with a blank screen It appears the vesa driver will not support this configuration. I tried the vga driver without success. What may I do to help diagnose this problem? tomdean >From /var/log/Xorg.0.log (!!) Got answer from freebsd-x11@freebsd.org - use the vesa driver. It sort of works. Xorg -configure edit xorg.conf.new to use the vesa driver and the Radeon chip (BusId) copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf log in to ttyv2 as a normal user startx works using the default xinitrc Exiting from the login xterm sometimes causes the machine to freeze. The screen goes blank. No response to keyboard, does nothing I cannot ping it from another machine. The laptop is hung. I left it for 20 minutes no change. Cycle power. After cycle power, fsck takes a long time. Anything that requires a disk access takes several seconds to start. `vi .cshrc` takes 7 seconds before the file is displayed! I hate cycle power. After fsck completes, response is normal - no noticeable delay between time hit and the file being displayed. tomdean From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 20 19:49:12 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64E1D1065670 for ; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 19:49:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kwm@rainbow-runner.nl) Received: from fep22.mx.upcmail.net (fep22.mx.upcmail.net [62.179.121.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A71FD8FC0A for ; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 19:49:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: from edge01.upcmail.net ([192.168.13.236]) by viefep18-int.chello.at (InterMail vM.8.01.02.02 201-2260-120-106-20100312) with ESMTP id <20110720193203.LBFT1513.viefep18-int.chello.at@edge01.upcmail.net>; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 21:32:03 +0200 Received: from [127.0.0.1] ([178.84.137.57]) by edge01.upcmail.net with edge id AKY11h0171EUzH601KY2Lk; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 21:32:03 +0200 X-SourceIP: 178.84.137.57 Message-ID: <4E272D19.8060601@rainbow-runner.nl> Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2011 21:31:37 +0200 From: Koop Mast User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20110624 Thunderbird/5.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: pedrogaca@unimetro.ed.ao References: <6ab82e94aab0c7a56a19ba9bb9b7024f.squirrel@webmail.unimetro.ed.ao> In-Reply-To: <6ab82e94aab0c7a56a19ba9bb9b7024f.squirrel@webmail.unimetro.ed.ao> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Antivirus: avast! The chip is "(II) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile (GT2)" FYI. The good news is that the driver itself works, and i have 1366x768 resolution and GLX on my desktop. The bad news: 1) X starts with 640x480 resolution, adding Modeline in xorg.conf doesn't help. The sections look like Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "Unknown" HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0 VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0 Modeline "1366x768" 69.30 1366 1398 1422 1432 768 771 775 806 -hsync -vsync Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "IntelMainScreen" Device "IntelMain" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1366x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "720x576" "720x480" "640x480" "640x400" "400x300" "320x240" "320x200" ViewPort 0 0 Virtual 0 0 EndSubSection EndSection , but they are like disregarded. However, adding the mode after X is started works: xrandr --newmode "1366x768" 69.30 1366 1398 1422 1432 768 771 775 806 -hsync -vsync xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1366x768 xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768 , so i've just added it to ~/.xinitrc 2) The linux stuff is like too old. Particularly, GoogleEarth crashes on start: $ googleearth drm_i915_getparam: -14 Google Earth has caught signal 11. That would be nice if someone packaged the appropriate rpms to make it work too. 3) also, as a side note if someone will try to repeat the same trick with the same Intel+Nvidia Lenovo notebook: don't forget to uninstall nvidia-driver (useless) before trying the above procedure. The driver installer replaces the mesa library files and the X GLX extension module with its own, and those (especially the latter) won't work with non-nvidia stuff. The second issue is that GLX is unavailable. The line about it in Xorg.0.log is: (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) meanwhile the Nvidia card is completely switched off in BIOS and the Nvidia driver is unloaded From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 20 23:53:58 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A4BA4106564A for ; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 23:53:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kob6558@gmail.com) Received: from mail-yi0-f54.google.com (mail-yi0-f54.google.com [209.85.218.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64C9D8FC0C for ; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 23:53:58 +0000 (UTC) Received: by yic13 with SMTP id 13so421108yic.13 for ; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 16:53:57 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=ZktEoMT/mXfdBMe01aecmb6Z7t61muMldiQqyfDHgvA=; b=qOKGHkC6tRoqpEwkJnW/pagO0g0Jokewwh0NT3IS9nSoKGEQRCxD0VV+kuo5vdDUc9 EngXn90Pxt9n8Tyw+0hQqaeES1Wt3RCtwjnZsb6i7uEEbdBg113ze4RzYhR3rGG3pPvS eMC8lUrk8l/+18Z6hor6TVU/JVzsHb7jfATvM= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.150.210.2 with SMTP id i2mr4272577ybg.312.1311206037824; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 16:53:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.151.27.21 with HTTP; Wed, 20 Jul 2011 16:53:57 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: References: <20110717131723.GA64621@bsdpad.com> Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2011 16:53:57 -0700 Message-ID: From: Kevin Oberman To: m irya Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: freebsd-current + nvidia GeForce GT 520M X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2011 23:53:58 -0000 On Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 3:28 PM, m irya wrote: > I've tried the KMS patches, according to the procedure described in > http://wiki.freebsd.org/Intel_GPU (including MESA update) . If KMS worked on your machine, you probably can use the driver with 3D acceleration on regular basis. As I see the state of the effort right now, there are two most impeding issues that prevent wider testing of the driver. First is the non-working display port code, causing failure in KMS for some configurations. This will be eventually fixed. Second is the very laborous procedure to install the required usermode components. The http://wiki.freebsd.org/Intel_GPU lists the requirements. The port provided ddx and mesa cannot be simply updated, because kernel driver is not yet in src/ head, not mentioning the stable branches. Also, new libdrm and mesa may be non-functional on our old non-intel DRI drivers. Additional quirk is that in-tree Xorg server is old, and git head for intel ddx cannot be built against old Xorg API. For wide testing, the easy way to install fresh usermode graphics stack is neededi, while still allowing the most installations to use present outdated versions. Could ports/x11 people help me there ? I suspect this might cause problems for non-Intel cards or for those who use in-tree i915.ko. Keep in mind that this update isn't complete yet. Not all xorg ports are updated yet. And there is the issue, that the old intel driver doesn't work with the new xorg-server. If you using this driver and don't want to update to current for the new intel driver, please don't use this repo. I'm currently working on a update for the mesa ports (libGL*, dri etc) to a version that works with the sandybridge. Also note that currently only the xf86-video-intel-kms driver is currently tested. (since my ati card seem to have died) svn co http://trillian.chruetertee.ch/ports/browser/branches/xorg-dev A basic merge script can be found here http://people.freebsd.org/~miwi/xorg/xorgmerge just run portmaster -a, keep in mind to rebuild your xf86-* ports after the server update. -Koop > For wide testing, the easy way to install fresh usermode graphics stack > is neededi, while still allowing the most installations to use present > outdated versions. > > Could ports/x11 people help me there ? I only have a sandybridge intel card to test. The only issue currently know are the nouveau driver (which needs mesa 7.4.4 and doesn't work with 7.6.x), and the old intel driver. If it turns out other drivers don't work with the new setup, obviously we need to make it so that they will work. Although I'm currently got half a mind to just drop the nouveau driver. -Koop > > -Koop > > > > > For wide testing, the easy way to install fresh usermode graphics stack > > > is neededi, while still allowing the most installations to use present > > > outdated versions. > > > > > > Could ports/x11 people help me there ? First, I would like to tell about newer patch version: http://people.freebsd.org/~mav/patch-zz-input-mouse9 Second, I still would like to hear any comments from x11@ people about possibility to include this patch to the xf86-input-mouse port. Patch should not be invasive for existing users, as most of code it touches never worked on FreeBSD before. If with perspective of the port update you need patch for the newer driver version, I will gladly do it, it should not be difficult. Thank you. -- Alexander Motin
