It sounds like you can install using a USB keyboard? If so, once you've installed, could you please provide the output of the "dmesg" command? If you don't wish to go through the install, is there any chance you could press the scroll-lock key when the installer has loaded, press page-up, and with a digital camera take photos of each screen, pressing page up again and capturing them all? Hopefully we'll be able to determine exactly why it isn't getting detected. If I use ? at the panic screen and wait long enough, eventually the device and the label will appear, but not until then. That being said I've also seen the issue with a handful of physical media drives as well with earlier 9.0 BETAs and RCs. This issue no doubt also will occur with some USB media, given past experience with sysinstall. >How-To-Repeat: 1. Get access to the IPMI controller on a Supermicro box that's x86_64 capable. 2. Mount the 9.0-RELEASE-amd64 image via the virtual media manager. 3. Boot from the virtual CD drive. >Fix: There are a couple ways to either resolve or work around this issue. 1. Set kern.cam.boot_delay to 20 seconds on the install media. This should quickly hack around the problem. 2. Rewrite the installer to instead bootstrap from an mfsroot, like sysinstall, then 'pivot' the root over to the CD, USB, etc media once it becomes available (a dumb while loop with a timeout should suffice). A detection mechanism for PXE booters should probably be added as a special case as I'm sure someday someone will hack the 9.0+ media to PXE boot. 3. Some other ata/cam fix could probably be applied to fix the overall general case, but I'm not sure what the solution might be... >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 9 08:15:36 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 43EF01065675; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 08:15:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from brde@optusnet.com.au) Received: from mail08.syd.optusnet.com.au (mail08.syd.optusnet.com.au [211.29.132.189]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D5FC08FC16; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 08:15:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from c211-30-171-136.carlnfd1.nsw.optusnet.com.au (c211-30-171-136.carlnfd1.nsw.optusnet.com.au [211.30.171.136]) by mail08.syd.optusnet.com.au (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id q098FUp5009185 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Mon, 9 Jan 2012 19:15:33 +1100 Date: Mon, 9 Jan 2012 19:15:30 +1100 (EST) From: Bruce Evans X-X-Sender: bde@besplex.bde.org To: Warren Block In-Reply-To: <201201082105.q08L5EXm038909@red.freebsd.org> Message-ID: <20120109183017.T1220@besplex.bde.org> References: <201201082105.q08L5EXm038909@red.freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Cc: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org, freebsd-gnats-submit@freebsd.org Subject: Re: bin/163934: [patch] usbconfig(8) sends help output to stderr instead of stdout X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Jan 2012 08:15:36 -0000 On Sun, 8 Jan 2012, Warren Block wrote: >> Description: > usbconfig(8)'s -h option prints output to stderr. Other, older bugs in usbconfig in this area are: - its usage message is verbose - its usage message doesn't match its man page synopsis (since that is actually a synopsis, so it is not verbose) A verbose usage message is especially not needed when there is a help option. I recently noticed even a gnu Configure script written in 2009 sending output for --help to stderr. The gnu standard has been for help to be given by `--help' and not by some random flag, and to go to stdout, since long before 2009. OTOH, for FreeBSD, there is usually no help option, and you had better get used to typing "... 2>&1 |less" or scrolling back to see verbose messages, or better yet, reading the man page. The man page for usbconfig is only 2.5 times longer than the usage messages, but that is because it is too short. It gives some examples, but it doesn't give a summary of the commands like the usage message does. It doesn't even mention most of commands. Some other commands with very verbose, but useful, usage messages that go to stderr are: - newfs (30 lines). As for usbconfig, the usage message doesn't resemble the man page synopsis, and the man page doesn't give a summary of the options (except in the synopsis where the summary is too short and hard to read since it is still long but not in a bullet point organization, though unlike for usbconfig, it is complete). Use of this style in newer commands is a style bug. - atacontrol (14 lines). Now the usage message matches the synopsis. This makes the synopsis too verbose but is otherwise good in the man page. The commands are sorted in "logical" order and 14 lines is just short enough for them to be easy to find (by reading the whole list). Normal programs have options and not so many commands, and normal man pages sort the options alphabetically. The style of the usage message was churned back and forth. In some versions of FreeBSD, it is reduced to a normal-looking 1-line usage message. In the same versions, it doesn't match the synopsis, since the synopsis has a summary of commands. A command that handles this quite differently, and probably best, is gnu tar. At least in the version that used to be in FreeBSD, the usage message for this goes to stderr and is: tar: invalid option -- ? Try `tar --help' for more information. and `tar --help' goes to stdout. Well, this is not very good either: - this takes more typing than "2>&1" - if we're going to switch the option, then we may as well switch the command to "man tar". This takes even less typing than "tar --help". - `tar --help' s so verbose that things are hard to find in it. Its style is gnuish and the man page's style is BSDish, so these outputs don't resemble each other. The man page output provides highlighting and alphabetical sorting of options which may make things easier to find in it, although it is 2.5 times as larger as the help output. However, many ports/packages are now using Python 3.x. Calibre is not compatible with 3.x versions of python, and when packages/ports are added which use Python 3, the default scripts in calibre want to use python 3.2 (currently) which are hopelessly incompatible with code written for 2.7 as is calibre and likely others as well. Calibre is broken when 3.x version of python is in the environment. >How-To-Repeat: Install anything which adds Python 3.2 such as /graphics/blender and calibre no longer loads with dyntax errors in python 3.2. >Fix: Spoke to Kovid Goyal, developer of calibre and he *insists* that his /usr/bin/python scripts all have "#!/usr/bin/env python2" in the scripts that he generates. In BSD however, each script is marked with "#!/usr/bin/env python" instead, which by default will call 3.2 and break. Obviously "python2" was modified for BSD since "python2" will not call the 2.7 python which is shipped with this port/package. Kovid suggests the following: calibre uses #!/usr/bin/env python2 It has for a long time. How did you get a version that uses bare python? I'm afraid I don't maintain the BSD calibre packages, you should contact Rusty. I will say that having a python2 symlink pointing to the latest python2 binary is good practice and should be encouraged. See http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0394/ Attempted to edit the offending calls, and "python2" fails, however "python2.7" *works* and calls properly where that is in the header. Since python2.7 is shipped with the port/package, HIGHLY recommend modifying those files to call python2.7 in the header so long as PY27 is shipped WITH the port/package. Lovid has *NO* intentions of supporting PY3.x in the near future, so this would be a long-term solution for this port. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 9 09:40:16 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2662F1065675 for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:40:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDE538FC17 for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:40:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q099eFO1058107 for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:40:15 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q099eF0i058106; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:40:15 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:40:15 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <201201090940.q099eF0i058106@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Volodymyr Kostyrko Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56CB0106564A for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:36:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from red.freebsd.org (red.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::22]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 45D368FC19 for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:36:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from red.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by red.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id q099aZT8093649 for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:36:35 GMT (envelope-from nobody@red.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by red.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id q099aYmQ093648; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:36:34 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <201201090936.q099aYmQ093648@red.freebsd.org> Date: Mon, 9 Jan 2012 09:36:34 GMT From: Volodymyr Kostyrko To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.1 Cc: Subject: bin/163951: bundled openssl seems to miss fix for a CVE-2011-1945 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Jan 2012 09:40:16 -0000 >Number: 163951 >Category: bin >Synopsis: bundled openssl seems to miss fix for a CVE-2011-1945 >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-bugs >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Mon Jan 09 09:40:15 UTC 2012 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Volodymyr Kostyrko >Release: RELENG_9 >Organization: >Environment: FreeBSD green.tandem.local 9.0-STABLE FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE #0 r229848: Mon Jan 9 10:58:48 EET 2012 arcade@green.tandem.local:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MINIMAL_4BSD amd64 >Description: Recently I started to recheck usability of ssh keys and found that ECDSA keys are already available.
