Thanks for looking at this. In our case we where forced to do this to export a directory which nfs refused to export due to being too long path. To work around this we exported a shorter path via a nullfs mount. This in itself wouldn't usually be an issue but the source volume is zfs mount and there appears to be no other way to ensure the nullfs mount was done after the zfs volume was available than to mark it as late hence the resulting problem. One problem I found is different PID of running process and in PID file: # ps auxwww | grep -i vboxheadless root 61699 200.0 8.6 2228216 2157712 ?? I Wed11PM 10707:27.35 /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxHeadless --comment FreeBSD_four --startvm 14d0f837-bd84-432a-8a8b-ee48b247d3ef --vrde config # cat /var/run/vboxheadless_FreeBSD_four.pid 61275 rc script contains this check: /usr/bin/su ${vmuser} -c "/usr/local/bin/VBoxManage showvminfo '${vmname}' >/dev/null" 2>/dev/null if [ $? != 0 ]; then /usr/bin/printf "%20s %s\n" "${vmname}" "Unknown Machine" elif [ -n "${pid}" ]; then /usr/bin/printf "%25s %s\n" "${vmname}" "Running" else /usr/bin/printf "%25s %s\n" "${vmname}" "Powered Off" fi Is it really right way to check it? I'd argue that in an NFSv4 or CIFS/SMB world it's inappropriate to export file systems until after LOGIN. Fixing that would render this issue moot. The reason is that mounts for either of those systems may require working kerberos and directory services. -- Brooks --OZkY3AIuv2LYvjdk Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFP64rXXY6L6fI4GtQRAkDYAJ0W7dxNKG7frLneSlhf0FVl9TGr+QCeJD2x LPjKHzv4w2QiLvivAA9r3EA= =g8CH -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --OZkY3AIuv2LYvjdk-- From owner-freebsd-rc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 27 23:15:35 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-rc@freebsd.org Received: from mx2.freebsd.org (mx2.freebsd.org [69.147.83.53]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BD35106566C; Wed, 27 Jun 2012 23:15:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dougb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (hub.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::36]) by mx2.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D99241611C9; Wed, 27 Jun 2012 23:14:55 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: <4FEB93EF.8040709@FreeBSD.org> Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:14:55 -0700 From: Doug Barton Organization: http://www.FreeBSD.org/ User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20120615 Thunderbird/13.0.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Brooks Davis References: <201206242320.q5ONK5Gf001469@freefall.freebsd.org> <20120624234248.GA33644@DataIX.net> <20120627223608.GD243@lor.one-eyed-alien.net> In-Reply-To: <20120627223608.GD243@lor.one-eyed-alien.net> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.4.2 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-rc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: conf/169373: mountd starts to early when exporting fs marked as late X-BeenThere: freebsd-rc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion related to /etc/rc.d design and implementation." Yeah, I think that Rick mentioned that at some point as well. I'm certainly not opposed to moving it there.
