You have pros and cons (I don't want to start a debate about it) of closed-source. Nvidia using nv has quite poor performance, on Linux as well. AMD/Ati platform has a lack of support on FreeBSD (TTM not fully implemented or something like that). That means no OpenGL hw acceleration. Intel is on the way: it's usable in 9-STABLE or 10-CURRENT and using not-yet-released ports. I successfully used SandyBridge with hardware acceleration, IvyBridge is still using DRISWRAST (sw raster, no OpenGL hw acceleration) and I don't understand why/no time to investigate it. If you need a solution NOW, my personal and questionable suggestion is NVidia GPU with nvidia closed-source driver. In the near future, another solution is Intel integrated graphics with open-source driver. It depends how much powerful your GPU should be. I'm using Nvidia and I have no problem. Someone had ones and it was bad, because he couldn't fix, cause closed-source nature of the driver. A note: there is a debate about x11/nvidia-driver, because it renames a couple of openGL libraries and replaces them with NVidia's ones. Using pkg (the new package system) this is not allowed. I don't know how this is could be solved. Remember also, that when you update OpenGL library (via portmaster), a cleaner way to do it is deinstall nvidia-driver, update OpenGL libraries and reinstall nvidia-driver. So I would like to know about how you did it (if) and see your versions, including mesa, GL, libglut and glx rendering string. this thread was initiated by Warren's answer and in fact what is interesting here which version HE is running because his card is doing dri and I am pretty sure, soon he upgrade his xorg he comes to rasterizing mode --=20 Jo=E3o Martins (JoaoBR) Infomatik Development Team http://wipserver.matik.com.br +55 11 4249.2222 --Sig_/9LDGl3h1NFvg/Ypi4iSG2Gs Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=signature.asc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlAQ1v4ACgkQCmIEQLX9sjrw0QCeL1TVfU0gYiAMiKZS7Pr3FSWC /IAAoIjIfshjk8E3KN5H5W9SnwWBAkWK =mrAQ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/9LDGl3h1NFvg/Ypi4iSG2Gs-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 26 13:50:12 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B37E106564A for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB4F28FC18 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q6QDoBpJ043994 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q6QDoB6q043993; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:11 GMT Message-Id: <201207261350.q6QDoB6q043993@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org From: Hiroto Kagotani Cc: Subject: Re: ports/170108: x11-fonts/libfontenc: library in the package searches bogus dir for encodings.dir X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Hiroto Kagotani List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:50:12 -0000 The following reply was made to PR ports/170108; it has been noted by GNATS. Sorry, the reason was wrong. It is that x11-fonts/encodings creates encodings.dir file including *.enc and *.enc.gz files, while it installs only *.enc.gz files. When libfontenc searches for an encoding file, it fails on the first miss. -- Hiroto Kagotani From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 26 15:26:56 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 724181065670 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 15:26:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2E848FC12 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 15:26:55 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q6QFQs5l011216; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 09:26:54 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) with ESMTP id q6QFQrrn011213; Thu, 26 Jul 2012 09:26:53 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2012 09:26:53 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: joaoBR In-Reply-To: <20120726023449.0bb85746@pop1.hm.net.br> Message-ID: References: <20120725030004.52b1e8c2@pop1.hm.net.br> <20120725112622.24184266@pop1.hm.net.br> <5010064A.7030406@bally-wulff.de> <20120725165439.01c894e9@pop1.hm.net.br> <5010500D.4030109@ksu.ru> <20120725170817.5d6d1edb@pop1.hm.net.br> <20120726023449.0bb85746@pop1.hm.net.br> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; format=flowed; charset=US-ASCII X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Thu, 26 Jul 2012 09:26:54 -0600 (MDT) Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 2/3D rendering cards X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2012 15:26:56 -0000 On Thu, 26 Jul 2012, joaoBR wrote: >>> which xorg version is it? 7.6 ? >> >> xf86-video-ati-6.14.6_1 >> xorg-7.5.2 >> xorg-server-1.10.6,1 >> > > where comes this video driver version from, mine is > xf86-video-ati-6.14.3_1 for same xorg-server Sorry, I forgot about that. Nevertheless this (if) is originated by tons of information out there, but without versions, without facts and dates, simply saying it works and opinions, even people post as knowledge something they just read in another thread, without relating it to the used versions is not enough.=20 Unfortunately xorg for FreeBSD has very little good docs, even not on freebsd.org. So at this moment people are very much on their own to figure out how to configure xorg with their hardware. I think in this cases this technical talks should be said with a pinch of salt, because it is not only spent time to figure it out but also money when buying hardware which then does not work as aspected. > libXxf86dga-1.1.2 X DGA Extension > libXxf86misc-1.0.3 X XF86-Misc Extension > libXxf86vm-1.1.1 X Vidmode Extension > libdrm-2.4.31_1 Userspace interface to kernel Direct Rendering > Module servi libglade2-2.6.4_5 GNOME glade library > libglut-7.11.2 OpenGL utility toolkit > linux-f10-xorg-libs-7.4_1 Xorg libraries (Linux Fedora 10) > xf86-input-keyboard-1.6.1 X.Org keyboard input driver > xf86-input-mouse-1.7.1 X.Org mouse input driver > xf86-video-ati-6.14.6_1 X.Org ati display driver > xf86-video-vesa-2.3.0_2 X.Org vesa display driver > xf86bigfontproto-1.2.0 XFree86-Bigfont extension headers > xf86dga-1.0.3 Test program for the XFree86-DGA extension > xf86dgaproto-2.1 XFree86-DGA extension headers > xf86driproto-2.1.1 XFree86-DRI extension headers > xf86miscproto-0.9.3 XFree86-Misc extension headers > xf86vidmodeproto-2.3.1 XFree86-VidModeExtension extension headers > xorg-7.5.2 X.Org complete distribution metaport > xorg-apps-7.5.2 X.org apps meta-port > xorg-cf-files-1.0.4 X.org cf files for use with imake builds > xorg-docs-1.6,1 X.org documentation files > xorg-drivers-7.5.2 X.org drivers meta-port > xorg-fonts-100dpi-7.5.1 X.Org 100dpi bitmap fonts > xorg-fonts-7.5.1 X.org fonts meta-port > xorg-fonts-75dpi-7.5.1 X.Org 75dpi bitmap fonts > xorg-fonts-cyrillic-7.5.1 X.Org Cyrillic bitmap fonts > xorg-fonts-miscbitmaps-7.5.1 X.Org miscellaneous bitmap fonts > xorg-fonts-truetype-7.5.1 X.Org TrueType fonts > xorg-fonts-type1-7.5.1 X.Org Type1 fonts > xorg-libraries-7.5.1 X.org libraries meta-port > xorg-macros-1.16.1 X.Org development aclocal macros > xorg-server-1.10.6,1 X.Org X server and related programs >=20 > The glx rendering string was in the previous message. >=20 thanks, so no hidden magic ... so it is your card=20 Without xorg.conf your card shows up with the same rendering string? > >From make.conf: > WITH_NEW_XORG=3Dyes > WITHOUT_NOUVEAU=3Dyes >=20 If I am not wrong WITHOUT_NOUVEAU was removed? > xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log at > http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/radeon/ >=20 I believe that AIGLX and COMPOSITE is default and no need to enable. I also use dualhead and the only config I have actually only two monitor sections to define the position of each. If I do that the mousecursor goes crazy after some time, shows up as a scribbled block 1x1cm > None of this is new. I've been running this version of xorg since it=20 > was available in ports a few months ago. well, xorg got much much better in terms of misconfiguration in xorg.conf, seems it stands everything, even unused options and only setting the wrong card driver can make it stop ... so last question, kind of useless but do you use kde4? Is openGL (DesktopEffects) enabled and running fine? now it would be nice that more people show up to compile a list of ati cards which really can do direct rendering, that would be helpfull for all thank you for posting all this --=20 Jo=E3o Martins (JoaoBR) Infomatik Development Team http://wipserver.matik.com.br +55 11 4249.2222 --Sig_/_0pCM4qxh57_QzrAvVn1IJ9 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=signature.asc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlASMJYACgkQCmIEQLX9sjphwgCdEmYcq3E9SP49r2sx36kKUmlF w3cAoKDNIjo+GKxP9GuzSysjULeQjAgO =Wh7h -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/_0pCM4qxh57_QzrAvVn1IJ9-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 27 12:49:25 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 54AB5106566C for ; Fri, 27 Jul 2012 12:49:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1B5EE8FC08 for ; Fri, 27 Jul 2012 12:49:25 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q6RCnNR3016194; Fri, 27 Jul 2012 06:49:23 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) with ESMTP id q6RCnNe7016191; Fri, 27 Jul 2012 06:49:23 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2012 06:49:23 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: joaoBR In-Reply-To: <20120727030914.4bd55d30@pop1.hm.net.br> Message-ID: References: <20120725030004.52b1e8c2@pop1.hm.net.br> <20120725112622.24184266@pop1.hm.net.br> <5010064A.7030406@bally-wulff.de> <20120725165439.01c894e9@pop1.hm.net.br> <5010500D.4030109@ksu.ru> <20120725170817.5d6d1edb@pop1.hm.net.br> <20120726023449.0bb85746@pop1.hm.net.br> <20120727030914.4bd55d30@pop1.hm.net.br> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; format=flowed; charset=US-ASCII X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Fri, 27 Jul 2012 06:49:24 -0600 (MDT) Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 2/3D rendering cards X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2012 12:49:25 -0000 On Fri, 27 Jul 2012, joaoBR wrote: >>> well all ati cards are PCIe and are supported, question is what >>> capabilities they have with FreeBSD and new xorg-serevr >> >> UMS is used for cards up to the 4000 series, but the driver wants KMS >> for newer cards. For 5000- and higher series cards, KMS is required for either 3D acceleration (a few cards) or to work at all. Later versions of the driver may remove UMS support for all cards, which will make them useless until FreeBSD has ATI KMS support. > thanks, so no hidden magic ... so it is your card > > Without xorg.conf your card shows up with the same rendering string? The make fails in the configure step with -lpcre not found. PCRE support in x11/xterm need this: .if defined(WITH_PCRE) CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --with-pcre LIB_DEPENDS= pcre.1:${PORTSDIR}/devel/pcre .endif The LIB_DEPENDS is overwritten by this: .if ${OSVERSION} < 900004 LIB_DEPENDS= utempter.0:${PORTSDIR}/sysutils/libutempter .endif It looks to me like that might have wanted to be a += rather than = but I'm not sure the intent. The workaround is '( cd ../../devel/pcre ; make install )', then compile the x11/xterm port. The port maintainer is on the Cc. No bug report was filed. It only still works because the driver still accept UMS. what eventually means that ATI users should not upgrade to newer xorg until this situation change >=20 > > I think DontZap makes no sense anymore because it does not zap > > anymore with either setting ... does it work for you? >=20 > Yes, but only because 'setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp' is > in my .xinitrc. This gives me hdmi, dvi and vga, where I can use VGA as one screen and either HDMI or DVI as the other. Mine's a powercolor Go! brand, but it doesn't matter...should be around $30-40 USD. Do not enable KMS, and all is well. It does take a while to switch back to syscons, especially if you are using a high resolution mode. I can't wait to use newer cards when ttm is possible, but performance is not lacking with OSS drivers on the 4xxx radeons. Well, I meant amd64/arm/i386/powerpc/sparc64 in the above. I haven't been doing ia64 builds for a long tome. And, I am told FreeBSD runs on some arm-based laptops. OTOH my initial testing for arm has focused only on "interesting" ports for servers, so I'm just kind of throwing that change in for free while trying to get powerpc/sparc64 correct. I have not yet started testing mips builds, but I hope to in the near future. mcl From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 28 18:35:51 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5D4F3106566B; Sat, 28 Jul 2012 18:35:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: from mail.soaustin.net (pancho.soaustin.net [76.74.250.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 361768FC0C; Sat, 28 Jul 2012 18:35:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail.soaustin.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id E769756258; Sat, 28 Jul 2012 13:35:44 -0500 (CDT) Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2012 13:35:44 -0500 From: Mark Linimon To: Marius Strobl Message-ID: <20120728183544.GA3162@lonesome.com> References: <201207150512.q6F5CgPv026812@freefall.freebsd.org> <20120715184036.GC15308@lonesome.com> <20120715223716.GA635@lonesome.com> <20120727152638.GG58433@alchemy.franken.de> <20120727214732.GB32302@lonesome.com> <20120728090334.GI58433@alchemy.franken.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20120728090334.GI58433@alchemy.franken.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.20 (2009-06-14) Cc: kwm@FreeBSD.org, marius@FreeBSD.org, x11@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, linimon@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/169874: [patch] fix graphics/dri, graphics/libGL, graphics/libdrm on tier-2 archs X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2012 18:35:51 -0000 On Sat, Jul 28, 2012 at 11:03:34AM +0200, Marius Strobl wrote: > On Fri, Jul 27, 2012 at 04:47:32PM -0500, Mark Linimon wrote: > > Still trying to get things to work right on all 5 archs. > > I still think that it's futile trying to get the X server related > bits to build on arm/ia64/mips at this point in time as currently > there's no kernel support for that on these architectures.
