An example: newfs /dev/da0s1a mount /dev/da0s1a /mnt cd /mnt restore rf /dev/sa0 The above passage is confusing because first it is giving an omnious warning about bad effects that can derive from misusing the -r option, and then, immediately following that, it gives an example of _correct_ usage of the -r option. It has been suggested that the material begining with "An example:" should be placed into its own separate paragraph, and I agree with that suggestion. Furthermore, I think that it would be best to make the meaning entirely clear by changing "An example:" to "Here is an example of how to _correctly_ use the -r option:" >How-To-Repeat: man 8 restore >Fix: See above. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 4 21:05:06 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F2C9D698 for ; Mon, 4 Mar 2013 21:05:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from errors@mail10.futurewins.com) Received: from mail-88-91.rm0001.net (mail-88-91.rm0001.net [216.55.88.91]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B970F14F2 for ; Mon, 4 Mar 2013 21:05:06 +0000 (UTC) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; s=k1; d=rm0001.net; h=From:To:Reply-To:Subject:Date:Message-ID:List-Unsubscribe:MIME-Version:Content-Type; bh=NS/kdfyEmvB8XWiGstjJDBybtwo=; b=FwTlR4hW9UZgSaM7bwH7YR8u9NrP1lTUaySm9H2Hahkbdcuh1TtTsWTqt3t7rzyysCwDZV2zzKns 23aU3JTg5Gy/rej6KQfnVuAh/71iDQXVeZs31408RI4nEeztc/o/DFxblECnrc+lbMdLMxPiCt7y 1KZM5psyZTZQOJyPJBA= From: "Freedom Disc USA" To: "doc@freebsd.org" Subject: CD's, DVD's, USB's Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2013 15:34:37 -0500 X-BPS1: 1794963 X-BPS2: 3299 Message-ID: X-Mailer: RM Mailer (v5.4.158.0) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.14 X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: info@freedomdisc.com List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2013 21:05:07 -0000 Click here to unsubscribe or update your email address. http://go.rm0002.net/r.asp?l=325221&ee=3299;doc%40&s=1794963 Good Day, Your company probably outsources its needs for CD, DVD, and USB Thumb Drive duplication, printing, and packaging. Part of this update will also allow users to build update servers, as the code for the freebsd-update-server was in the projects repository in CVS that is no-longer available. The changes are as follows: * Add copyright for 2013 * Point users to new source of software. (location name and source have changed). * cvs -> svn * freebsd-update-server -> freebsd-update-build * Add instructions how to get software, as download via tarball is no-longer an option. * Role change for Security Officer * Drop tip for rst packets as this is no longer an issues with all supported versions of FreeBSD. * Drop two tip comments as they have been merged into document. (one previously, and one for this diff) Any comments, suggestions and feedback are welcome. My documentation skills are not the greatest, so pardon any whitespace or placement issues and feel free to slap me with an editorial fish! Before running it, I checked to see if the password format was the one I was expecting to be with vipw(8) and I saw that the root password was empty. I understand that this is the case with "make installworld" and that it is also the case when installing a system from CLI; it's not the first time I noticed it, and I suppose there is a reason for root's default password to be empty and not starred out -probably to prevent someone from getting locked out from the machine accidentally before setting a root password-. Furthermore, I know that this is documented in jail(8)'s man page, but due to the security risk imposed when someone forgets to set a password for root, I see no reason why a reminder for setting the root password should not be mentioned in the Handbook's jail section as well, with bold fonts or in a warning-box. Thank you all for your time in advance, George Mamalakis. In short, I think it would be EXTREMELY helpful to consolidate all of the pages into two. 1. Booting to ZFS 2. Advanced ZFS partitioning The long story is that I have just spent several days documenting my efforts to get multiple systems to boot from ZFS. First, thank you to all who have contributed to the wiki, I would not have been able to get it done without you. That being said these are 11 pages I have found on the wiki: /RootOnZFS, /RootOnZFS/UFSBoot, /RootOnZFS/ZFSBootPartition, /RootOnZFS/ZFSBootSlice, /RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot, /RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/Mirror, /RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/RAIDZ1, /RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/RAIDZ2, /RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/9.0-RELEASE, /ZFSOnRoot, /ZFSOnRootWithZFSboot I have read all of those, plus another half dozen on the internet. While the steps are largely the same, they all seem to have their own little differences. I have copied and pasted the commands from more than one of them into virtual machines, and they would not boot. My overall experience was extremely draining. I expected that when I am copying and pasting commands from a wiki, and it does not boot, the problem is not with the commands. When there are different commands being run on one example from the other, I have to go research which one is right. I spent a lot of time chasing my tail. I don't want to just complain that it should be better, I would like to share the internal documentation that I put together from all of the web pages, man pages, and server testing. I am not 100% certain I am doing everything the "right" way, but I am 100% CERTAIN that I have COPY/PASTED each and every one of these commands into a FreeBSD-9.1-RELEASE LiveCD shell and then successfully booted. These commands cover all of the information that I needed to know that was spread out across the internet. Hopefully someone can find this information useful who has the time, inclination, and write access to the wiki. Cheers, Cody ###### Boot to LiveCD on 9.1-RELEASE media ###### ## -- I like copy/paste accuracy, so I enable sshd on the liveCD dhclient em0 mkdir /tmp/etc mount_unionfs /tmp/etc /etc sed -i '' 's/#PermitRootLogin no/PermitRootLogin yes/g' /etc/ssh/sshd_config service sshd onestart passwd ###### GPT INSTALL ###### gpart create -s gpt ada0 gpart add -s 122 -t freebsd-boot -l boot0 ada0 gpart add -s 2048M -t freebsd-swap -l swap0 ada0 gpart add -t freebsd-zfs -l disk0 ada0 gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ada0 zpool create -R /mnt -O canmount=off -o cachefile=/tmp/zpool.cache zroot /dev/gpt/disk0 ###### MBR INSTALL ###### gpart create -s mbr ada0 gpart add -t freebsd ada0 gpart create -s bsd ada0s1 gpart add -s 51G -t freebsd-zfs ada0s1 gpart add -s 8G -t freebsd-swap ada0s1 glabel label disk0 /dev/ada0s1a glabel label swap /dev/ada0s1b gpart set -a active -i 1 ada0 gpart bootcode -b /boot/mbr ada0 dd if=/boot/zfsboot of=/dev/ada0s1 count=1 dd if=/boot/zfsboot of=/dev/ada0s1a skip=1 seek=1024 zpool create -R /mnt -O canmount=off -o cachefile=/tmp/zpool.cache zroot /dev/label/disk0 ###### ZRAID/MIRROR GPT INSTALL ###### gpart create -s gpt ada0 gpart add -s 122 -t freebsd-boot -l boot0 ada0 gpart add -s 2048M -t freebsd-swap -l swap0 ada0 gpart add -t freebsd-zfs -l disk0 ada0 gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ada0 gpart create -s gpt ada1 gpart add -s 122 -t freebsd-boot -l boot1 ada1 gpart add -s 2048M -t freebsd-swap -l swap1 ada1 gpart add -t freebsd-zfs -l disk1 ada1 ## -- repeat for adaN gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ada1 gmirror label -b load -F swap /dev/gpt/swap0 /dev/gpt/swap1 zpool create -R /mnt -O canmount=off -o cachefile=/tmp/zpool.cache zroot mirror /dev/gpt/disk0 /dev/gpt/disk1 ## -- zpool create zroot [mirror|raidz1|raidz2|raidz3] /dev/gpt/disk0 ... /dev/gpt/diskN ###### COMMON INSTALL COMMANDS ######### zfs set mountpoint=/zroot zroot zfs set checksum=fletcher4 zroot zfs create -o mountpoint=legacy zroot/ROOT mount -t zfs zroot/ROOT /mnt tar -C /mnt -xppf /usr/freebsd-dist/base.txz tar -C /mnt -xppf /usr/freebsd-dist/kernel.txz zpool set bootfs=zroot/ROOT zroot zfs set freebsd:boot-environment=1 zroot/ROOT cp /tmp/zpool.cache /mnt/boot/zfs/ echo 'hostname="host"' >> /mnt/etc/rc.conf echo 'zfs_enable="YES"' >> /mnt/etc/rc.conf echo 'zfs_load="YES"' >> /mnt/boot/loader.conf echo 'vfs.root.mountfrom="zfs:zroot/ROOT"' >> /mnt/boot/loader.conf ###### GPT INSTALL ###### cat << EOF > /mnt/etc/fstab # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass# /dev/gpt/swap0 none swap sw 0 0 EOF ###### MBR INSTALL ###### cat << EOF > /mnt/etc/fstab # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass# /dev/label/swap none swap sw 0 0 EOF ###### ZRAID/MIRROR GPT INSTALL ###### echo 'geom_mirror_load="YES"' >> /mnt/boot/loader.conf cat << EOF > /mnt/etc/fstab # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass# /dev/mirror/swap none swap sw 0 0 EOF ###### CHROOT INSTALL COMMANDS ###### chroot /mnt passwd root tzsetup cd /etc/mail make aliases exit reboot ###### DISCUSSION ###### ## -- notes on swap -- swap can go on ZFS filesystem but can no longer be used as a dump device. ## -- mountpoint=legacy for zroot/ROOT release/9.1.0/tools/tools/zfsboottest/zfsboottest.sh "Dataset's mountpoint property should be set to 'legacy'" I would imagine this protects you against importing the pool on another system, and forgetting the altroot command. I don't think you could have summed up what I hoped could happen any better! I do hope that you will also consider keeping the MBR boot code in there. I don't know if this is intentional or not. A quick grep reveals the following ("-" means not documented anywhere): GEOM_AES - GEOM_BDE Documented in gbde(4) manpage GEOM_BSD - GEOM_CACHE - GEOM_CONCAT - GEOM_ELI Documented in geli(8) manpage GEOM_FOX Documented in geom_fox(4) manpage GEOM_GATE Mentioned in hastd(8) GEOM_JOURNAL - GEOM_LABEL - GEOM_LINUX_LVM Documented in geom_linux_lvm(4) manpage GEOM_MBR - GEOM_MIRROR - GEOM_MULTIPATH - GEOM_NOP - GEOM_PART_APM Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_BSD Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_EBR Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_EBR_COMPAT Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_GPT Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_LDM Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_MBR Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_PC98 Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PART_VTOC8 Documented in gpart(8) manpage GEOM_PC98 - GEOM_RAID - GEOM_RAID3 - GEOM_SHSEC - GEOM_STRIPE - GEOM_SUNLABEL - GEOM_UZIP Documented in geom_uzip(4) manpage GEOM_VIRSTOR - GEOM_VOL - GEOM_ZERO - Both the gpart(8) and geli(8) manpages have kernel options in the SYNOPSIS, which probably isn't correct for section 8 manpages. Some options are already documented in section 4 manpages (GEOM_BDE, GEOM_FOX, GEOM_LINUX_LVM and GEOM_UZIP) but what do we do with the rest? What about using the SYNOPSIS in the geom(4) manpage?
