I was a able to fix the original issue without any special hacks and http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=3Dgajim&stype=3Dall&sektion= =3Dall now shows up-to-date information. I'm going to babysit this update for about a day or so before considering it "done", so please let me know if you see anything strange. Note that the updates are to happen every 2 hours UTC time, so if something is not reflected within 10 minutes, do not panic. This is still running on the old system, so I have yet to do the other magic to move things around. On the second page ( http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/solid-state/kernel.html), the instructions say to add "options MFS", "options MD_ROOT", and "pseudo-device md" to your kernel configuration. I've been searching briefly (very briefly) and came across a fairly old post ( http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2005-May/015115.html) claiming that pseudo-device is no longer used or is at least deprecated. Trying to add that option gave me a syntax error; so, I'm going out on a limb to say that the option isn't supported? I later found in the generic kernel that the line "device md" is already in place with the comment "Pseudo devices." Another issue (this may or may not be a fault of my own) is regarding "options MFS" as a suggested addition to the configuration. Attempt to include the option and build the kernel yields an unknown option error. I'll be digging around, but if this is blatantly no longer the correct option, please let me know! The final option regarding MD_ROOT was already included in the generic kernel; so, I guess that's fine to still reference. I haven't taken a look at the later pages since I wasn't able to build the kernel. Since I'm not very familiar with FreeBSD, I wouldn't know what to look for in terms of outdated material. If this page is indeed out of date, it might be worth adding to the backlog to take a look at the rest of the SSD material to ensure it isn't old. Generally, we include links in this area when there is somewhat conclusive proof of FreeBSD usage in such areas. Unfortunately, in this case Phoronix article and the screenshots are not enough. That is exactly the problem with old information. gvinum still works, but there is little reason to recommend it over the newer solutions. Rather than just removing this chapter, it could be converted to a separate article, along with an added introduction about when it was removed from the Handbook and why. Off list here - Couldn't agree more! In fact the whole disk mirroring thing still confuses me, as there are too many options and no guide for choosing between them. As far as I understand it, gmirror is the way to go in most cases because you end up with two identical drives, either of which can be salvaged from the wreckage after a crash, stuck in to another PC and booted. ZFS is the solution if you want to spread lots of data across lots of drives. Actually, in practical terms, I don't see why ZFS is better than pairs (or threes) of gmirrored drives mounted on to one file system in the traditional way. Perhaps I just don't get it, or perhaps I'm just too traditional to give up on the idea that it's good to know which drive a particular file is on. And then there's are the options for striping, which I avoid in favour of mirroring because disks are big and cheap now, and a RAID-5 crash is a PITA. So yes - please do anything to help make sense of this. It needs someone who knows about all the options to compare them properly. I'm sorry to say that I've only ever bothered with what works for me. Regards, Frank. So I would advise this: gmirror(8) for data safety on machines with relatively limited memory. graid(8) for software BIOS RAID. It's RAID, so you get more space than mirrors, and possibly better performance for some things. ZFS RAID-Z1 (and -Z2, -Z3) have a lower vacuum coefficient than RAID-5. There are lots of nifty features, like being able to add storage without reformatting. There are other options, but I suspect the three above cover most of the needs and are what we should be suggesting to new users in the Handbook. Hmm, I seem to recall there being desire to keep the documentation around the last time this question came up, but don't remember why. Let's go rooting around in the archives... It seems that as of 2009, gvinum was still useful enough that I was happy to have documentation fixes for it (http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-doc/2009-May/015913.html), though just two weeks later this thread (http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-hackers/2009-May/028730.html) sees to indicate that it was dying already. The documentation is always behind on the times... I thought there was an attempt to remove gvinum or the documentation thereof since then, but cannot find any record of it. That means we don't get to re-analyze the arguments presented then, and can just do it. -Ben From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 26 02:20:11 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 211FABC8 for ; It won't be first-line information in the Handbook, but can still be found. Hi Rui, It seems that http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/network-wireless.html does have some documentation on the configuration of host access points, which could benefit from adoption to this new configuration mode. Were you proposing that you make these changes? I find that articles are less often - updated - translated so I think that "downgrading" the content to an article is a good step if we think the information is not useful in the general case. However, if the information is obsolete we already have http://docs.freebsd.org/doc/ and it should be removed entirely. -- Eitan Adler From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 26 23:29:41 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 083486FD for ; Wed, 26 Jun 2013 23:29:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C01221688 for ; Wed, 26 Jun 2013 23:29:40 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.7/8.14.7) with ESMTP id r5QNTcSj094257; Wed, 26 Jun 2013 17:29:38 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.7/8.14.7/Submit) with ESMTP id r5QNTcZI094254; Wed, 26 Jun 2013 17:29:38 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2013 17:29:38 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: Eitan Adler Subject: Re: Handbook obsolescence scan: "The vinum Volume Manager" In-Reply-To: Message-ID: References: User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.4.3 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Wed, 26 Jun 2013 17:29:39 -0600 (MDT) Cc: doc@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2013 23:29:41 -0000 On Wed, 26 Jun 2013, Eitan Adler wrote: > On Wed, Jun 26, 2013 at 4:23 AM, Warren Block wrote: >> Moving it to an article should cover all the bases. I kind of wish you had pointed that out earlier today, before I made an article version of the vinum chapter. It's ready to commit, but even easier to delete.
