Of particular interest is the section at the end of the emacs chapter: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/psgml-mode.html There is also a vim configuration shown in the Writing Style chapter on indentation, currently 12.3.3: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/writing-style-guide.html That also looks outdated (sgml rather than xml). The proposal is two parts: First, remove the "Using sgml-mode with Emacs" chapter altogether. Teaching users to use an editor is out of scope of the FDP Primer. (And reputed to be outdated, but so far emacs users have not volunteered to update it.) This may have been a big deal back when it was added, but there are multiple XML-capable editors now, and their documentation will be more helpful to the user than a rarely-updated section in the FDP Primer. Second, move the small configuration file entries for both editors into a new "Editor Configuration" appendix. This will be easier for users to find and easier to keep updated. So: emacs users, please provide a modern configuration for emacs. vim users, provide an updated configuration for vim. Thanks! One renderer will be dblatex, which doesn't depend on Java but doesn't give such high quality output. The other one will be FOP, which is written is Java but produces better quality. Here are some PDFs for review, rendered with Apache FOP: http://kovesdan.org/files/fop/ I need suggestions for royalty-free print-quality Bengali, Greek and Cyrillic fonts since these are still not customized and the default fonts lack non-Latin glyphs. Apart from this, any comments are welcome. I know some parts still need improvements but feel free to comment on anything you think that should be changed. It should instead say "(size-1)'th > character" (which is last in the buffer). I think one could argue either way. The character with index (size-1) gets the NUL byte, but if one says that the first character is the one with index 0, then it is in fact the size'th character which receives the NUL. -Ben Kaduk From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 23 21:11:47 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 94786FF for ; Tue, 23 Jul 2013 21:11:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4C2BE257C for ; Tue, 23 Jul 2013 21:11:47 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.7/8.14.7) with ESMTP id r6NLBjx0060581; Tue, 23 Jul 2013 15:11:45 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.7/8.14.7/Submit) with ESMTP id r6NLBjSV060578; Tue, 23 Jul 2013 15:11:45 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2013 15:11:45 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: Gabor Kovesdan Subject: Re: CFR: documentation rendered in PDF with FOP In-Reply-To: <51EE8750.7040208@FreeBSD.org> Message-ID: References: <51EE8750.7040208@FreeBSD.org> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.4.3 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Tue, 23 Jul 2013 15:11:45 -0600 (MDT) Cc: FBSD Doc project X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2013 21:11:47 -0000 On Tue, 23 Jul 2013, Gabor Kovesdan wrote: > I'm working on new rendering solutions for our documentation. There is something weird about bulleted lists and sub-lists, starting on page 35 of the PDF Handbook (page 7-9 of the content). Some entries in the first list are blank, the ones in the second list have an extra linefeed after the bullet. Examples: filename "fromboz.c" printed as from- boz.c "/usr/share/mk" printed as / share/mk "Option -o" printed as Option - o From the english version: "" printed as Plus, in some paragraphs nearly all lines end with a hyphen; I think that makes the whole hard to read. If possible, I would turn syllabification off altogether. It is a known issue and is actually the result of misplaced indexterms, not a bug in the rendering. I've already fixed some of them in the English docs but translations still has to be fixed and there may be slightly different cases, which I haven't caught yet. We should document in fdp-primer that indexterms should be put right inside of the text after the referred word. Not between paragraphs, not into , not into but right inside after the referred word without leaving a single a space. If they are not in , it can cuase such problems. And if you put a space before the indexterm, there may be a page break and you get a wrong page number in the index. But the probability of this latter is very low, the former thing is more important. > The line-wrap characters are very welcome! They still need some tuning > (see PDF page 26). Or maybe that's in the source XML, but it's good > to see a start on that! Yes, I've also noticed that that page is quite weird. The line-wrap part should be easy to fix, we just have to add the comma as a possible wrapping character. It is stranger why the text overflows instead of causing a page break. The good thing is that the output of the renderer is very clean and we can clearly see which pages have overflows. Hyphenation can still be improved and actually it is a requirement for printed publications. With hyphenation, justification works better and text should have a more pleasant outlook. We can tweak the dictionaries to avoid hyphenating the word FreeBSD and such. And as a last resort, we can still easily turn it off if we are not satisfied with the result. The rendering is still a work in progress. I'll see what I can do here. That's my fault, Gabor had user input in bold but I felt it had so much contrast that it distracted rather than clarified. Our screen elements are not separated from other text, either. The current programlisting elements are better, in a box with a gray background. We could make screen elements identical, but there is some value to the reader in making them look different. I checked various web documentation pages for other projects, and most did not distinguish between system output and user input. In some cases, that is likely to prompt a user to type a prompt. The best-looking example I found was some Slackware documentation, which uses plain text for system output and bold for user input, but put it on a gray background which helped tone down the contrast. Putting this all together, I've been trying this experimental addition to doc/share/misc/docbook.css. It makes the userinput bold, draws a box around screen elements, but uses a sort of medium tan background so it does not look like a programlisting. The color is questionable, and there may be a better choice. Lighter colors seemed too bright. But I do find this easier to read. Comments welcome. I'm unsure about the actual conventions, probably we should consult some bibliography. I'm thinking of some hints on what to index. We currently index company names. Should we do it or just technical terms? Shall we index acronyms or the full term and add a see entry for the former ones? How should we use secondary terms? As for translations, I think that indexterms should be translated if the term is translated in the body text but currently it is not always done. We should clarify these questions. My name is Jiya as a Business Development Consultant with Seo, Web Designing and Web Development firm. I would like to discuss a business opportunity with you. This is a Search Engine Optimization firm, with over 3 years of experience. We have been partnering with various digital agencies over U.S., UK, Australia and Europe. Did you know? Over 80% of online searchers focus on the 1st page of search engine results. If your website does not make it to the first page, you can lose on potential traffic on your webpage and consequently revenue for your company. Higher Traffic = Higher Sales I took the liberty of browsing through your website and realized that despite having a good design it is not ranking on any of the search engines for most keywords pertaining to your domain. This calls for an Action! Our Search Engine Optimization (SEO) service provides you with up-to-date and ethical techniques based on recent algorithm changes done by Google. YOU need OUR high-standard SEO for your business because: * Our approach to content syndication as per Google website * Websites are audited and filtered for duplicate contents * One way link for client through quality websites * Serviced 2000+ client across various domains through a team of qualified and dedicated professionals * All SEO professionals are Google Ad words certified. Kindly revert back if you are interested. I would be happy to share our Work Portfolio, Client testimonials and Service Packages. I look forward to hearing from you! Is the named file a specific file that might have a man page entry (like rc.conf)? Is it a file whos name the user will likely want to change?
