The old OpenFirmware needs an Apple Partition Map to boot but will boot over USB, which I've tested. My plan is to carve the required Apple Partition Map on a 'minimalist' USB flash stick, with pivot to the 'real' FreeBSD system on a hard disk. That disk will use a GUID table and ZFS. It's external too (USB or FireWire). There is no internal disk at all. My notion is to rig the thumb drive just for (1) APM and (2) fast bootup. Reads are fast...writes horrible. The min would be GRUB I guess? But it could hold a kernel, and maybe more. What's best? I may just need a good fstab, but I'm unacquainted with ZFS, and so open to advice on it; /tmp will live in RAM; there will be no swap space. I want to run a lot from RAM, with sync to disk at intervals or shutdown. $HOME lives in RAM and syncs. It's only for dotfiles and prefs. Big data (vids/pics/docs/etc) live elsewhere. Putting $HOME in RAM is odd but speeds a system and saves the day in power crashes. I'd like nightly auto upgrades if possible. Can v10's new packaging system do them? Does FreeBSD have an app for that? Thanks for any tips you can lend. -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Access all of your messages and folders wherever you are From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 3 03:04:07 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 134AC927 for ; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 03:04:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (wmauth3.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.226]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D3DC01EF1 for ; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 03:04:06 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Oracle Communications Messaging Server 7u4-27.01(7.0.4.27.0) 64bit (built Aug 30 2012)) id <0MYT00F001UGH500@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Thu, 02 Jan 2014 21:03:59 -0600 (CST) X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-3, Version=6.0.3.2322014, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.2107409, Antispam-Data: 2014.1.3.21814, SenderIP=0.0.0.0 X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=0.0.0.0 Received: from wanderer.tachypleus.net (pool-72-66-107-173.washdc.fios.verizon.net [72.66.107.173]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Oracle Communications Messaging Server 7u4-27.01(7.0.4.27.0) 64bit (built Aug 30 2012)) with ESMTPSA id <0MYT00BII1U8NB00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Thu, 02 Jan 2014 21:03:46 -0600 (CST) Message-id: <52C6288F.7050106@freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 02 Jan 2014 22:03:43 -0500 From: Nathan Whitehorn User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.2.0 To: precutcolours@mailcan.com, freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Install Tips for Newbie with FreeBSD 10 References: <1388713046.8058.65995889.43FA6F1D@webmail.messagingengine.com> In-reply-to: <1388713046.8058.65995889.43FA6F1D@webmail.messagingengine.com> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.6 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.17 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2014 03:04:07 -0000 On 01/02/14 20:37, precutcolours@mailcan.com wrote: > I'd like tips for installing FreeBSD 10 on a PowerPC G5 + 2 GiB RAM. > > The old OpenFirmware needs an Apple Partition Map to boot but will boot > over USB, which I've tested. > > My plan is to carve the required Apple Partition Map on a 'minimalist' > USB flash stick, with pivot to the 'real' FreeBSD system on a hard disk. > That disk will use a GUID table and ZFS. The only restriction is that the kernel must be on UFS for the time being. You could use GPT, but that will only complicate things and provides no particular benefit. The easy thing is to make a relatively small / partition (UFS) from the installer, install to that, and then set up ZFS on the rest of the disk(s) once you've rebooted into the installed system for home etc. You'll want the 64-bit PowerPC disks to get decent performance out of ZFS, by the way. > I may just need a good fstab, but I'm unacquainted with ZFS, and so open > to advice on it; /tmp will live in RAM; there will be no swap space. > > I want to run a lot from RAM, with sync to disk at intervals or > shutdown. $HOME lives in RAM and syncs. However, due to some in-progress infrastructure adjustments, the FreeBSD project is not currently providing prebuilt PowerPC packages, so it won't work in your case. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 3 09:32:20 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 69BC7F1E; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 09:32:20 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freebsd-stable.sentex.ca (freebsd-stable.sentex.ca [IPv6:2607:f3e0:0:3::6502:9b]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 424D11A3A; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 09:32:20 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freebsd-stable.sentex.ca (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freebsd-stable.sentex.ca (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id s039WJuW033161; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 09:32:19 GMT (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: (from tinderbox@localhost) by freebsd-stable.sentex.ca (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id s039WJrG033160; Fri, 3 Jan 2014 09:32:19 GMT (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2014 09:32:19 GMT Message-Id: <201401030932.s039WJrG033160@freebsd-stable.sentex.ca> X-Authentication-Warning: freebsd-stable.sentex.ca: tinderbox set sender to FreeBSD Tinderbox using -f Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Subject: [releng_9 tinderbox] failure on powerpc/powerpc Precedence: bulk X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.17 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2014 09:32:20 -0000 TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:46 - tinderbox 2.20 running on freebsd-stable.sentex.ca TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:46 - FreeBSD freebsd-stable.sentex.ca 8.3-STABLE FreeBSD 8.3-STABLE #0: Tue Oct 16 17:37:58 UTC 2012 mdtancsa@freebsd-stable.sentex.ca:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/server amd64 TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:46 - starting RELENG_9 tinderbox run for powerpc/powerpc TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:46 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:46 - /usr/local/bin/svn stat /src TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:52 - At svn revision 260218 TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - building world TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - CROSS_BUILD_TESTING=YES TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/obj TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - SRCCONF=/dev/null TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - TARGET=powerpc TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - TARGET_ARCH=powerpc TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - TZ=UTC TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - __MAKE_CONF=/dev/null TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - cd /src TB --- 2014-01-03 07:03:53 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Fri Jan 3 07:03:54 UTC 2014 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything [...] cc -O2 -pipe -I/src/usr.bin/kdump/../ktrace -I/src/usr.bin/kdump -I/src/usr.bin/kdump/../.. -I. -std=gnu99 -fstack-protector -Wsystem-headers -Wall -Wno-format-y2k -W -Wno-unused-parameter -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Wreturn-type -Wcast-qual -Wwrite-strings -Wswitch -Wshadow -Wunused-parameter -Wcast-align -Wchar-subscripts -Winline -Wnested-externs -Wredundant-decls -Wold-style-definition -Wno-pointer-sign -c kdump_subr.c cc -O2 -pipe -I/src/usr.bin/kdump/../ktrace -I/src/usr.bin/kdump -I/src/usr.bin/kdump/../.. -I. -std=gnu99 -fstack-protector -Wsystem-headers -Wall -Wno-format-y2k -W -Wno-unused-parameter -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Wreturn-type -Wcast-qual -Wwrite-strings -Wswitch -Wshadow -Wunused-parameter -Wcast-align -Wchar-subscripts -Winline -Wnested-externs -Wredundant-decls -Wold-style-definition -Wno-pointer-sign -c /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c: In function 'ktrsyscall': /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c:1034: error: 'SYS_procctl' undeclared (first use in this function) /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c:1034: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c:1034: error: for each function it appears in.) /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c: In function 'ktrfault': /src/usr.bin/kdump/kdump.c:1632: warning: format '%jx' expects type 'uintmax_t', but argument 2 has type 'vm_offset_t' *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/usr.bin/kdump. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/usr.bin. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. I should clarify. The whole point of the flash stick is to isolate the Apple Partition Table problem. I need GUID tables on all other disks. These must be used by other machines. The flash stick can stay put on its assigned box. (For booting that alone, there's no particular benefit to GUID tables, as you say.) Next, I gather at least one UFS partition holds the BSD kernel. OK. So I can't boot FreeBSD straight from ZFS on PowerPC? Am I correct that the min install on the flash stick would be GRUB2 pointing to a boot kernel on a UFS partition someplace else? Since I can't use ZFS for the kernel anyway, would it be better to put the UFS-kernel partition on the flash stick itself, with the rest of BSD on some ZFS partition? I would already have the partition tables made, it's just a question of populating and filesystems. I do not see a need to ask FreeBSD to make the partition tables. I could have the filesystems already done, too, so the installer could just populate. I dislike the notion of installing one place, then divvying up. On Linux there is usually a menu-driven scheme to assign /tmp, /var, /home and such wherever during install. I assume FreeBSD 10 has something equivalent. > FreeBSD project is not currently providing prebuilt PowerPC packages Thanks for that sad tip. I was waiting on v 10 binary packaging. I was aware of all the meltdowns in recent months. So even with the new v 10, I must build all packages on PowerPC from source, like Gentoo Linux? Has the BSD team any ETA/plans on binary package support for PowerPC (weeks/months/years/never)? I'm still not quite sure why you need GPT -- if you are sharing the disks with other FreeBSD, Apple, or Linux machines, they can all read APM no matter the platform. And APM and GPT have essentially the same features. But you are of course free to use GPT for non-boot disks if you like. > Next, I gather at least one UFS partition holds the BSD kernel. OK. There are a number of directions you will find on the web for setting up ZFS systems or ZFS + UFS boot partition. They are x86 focused, but the same instructions -- aside from ZFS and GPT not being bootable -- apply perfectly well to PPC. > >> FreeBSD project is not currently providing prebuilt PowerPC packages > Thanks for that sad tip. OSX support died with 10.5. A bunch of Linux distros totally dropped building for ppc/32. I'm starting to really get attached to running FreeBSD and would like to install it on my powerpc equipment. I attempted to load the LiveCD in my powerbook, and maybe 2 seconds into bootup (with tty output on screen) the entire system abruptly shuts off. Any hints? GPT allows the hard disk to boot other systems. They have their own BIOS/firmware needs. Also, I've dealt with APM on *nix, and it's too much pain and suffering. Never mind Windows or end users. Newer Macs use GPT too. I suppose with $HOME and /tmp and caches in RAM, I could install BSD wholesale to the 12 GB flash stick, though upgrades would be an all-day chore given the awful writing speed and compilation. I had the impression ZFS support was more mature? It sounds like much in BSD still doesn't quite work with ZFS, if the fs itself works fine. Almost to a point of best avoided for exotic setups like mine on odd CPUs like mine? Do you have tips for UFS on the flash stick? I know exactly what to do using ext4 on Linux, but not really with UFS. Matter of fact, for ext4 I do e.g. mkfs.ext4 -v -t ext4 -b 2048 -i 16384 -I 128 -m 1 -O ^has_journal -L MyDiskName /dev/sdxN with /etc/mke2fs.conf features = extent,flex_bg,uninit_bg,dir_nlink,extra_isize auto_64-bit_support = 1 Thanks -- http://www.fastmail.fm - One of many happy users: http://www.fastmail.fm/help/overview_quotes.html From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 4 02:27:50 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C15279B2 for ; Sat, 4 Jan 2014 02:27:50 +0000 (UTC) Received: from smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu (wmauth4.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.145]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8B98E170E for ; Sat, 4 Jan 2014 02:27:50 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Oracle Communications Messaging Server 7u4-27.01(7.0.4.27.0) 64bit (built Aug 30 2012)) id <0MYU00L00UOZFG00@smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Fri, 03 Jan 2014 20:27:48 -0600 (CST) X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-4, Version=6.0.3.2322014, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.2107409, Antispam-Data: 2014.1.4.15714, SenderIP=0.0.0.0 X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=0.0.0.0 Received: from wanderer.tachypleus.net (pool-72-66-107-173.washdc.fios.verizon.net [72.66.107.173]) by smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Oracle Communications Messaging Server 7u4-27.01(7.0.4.27.0) 64bit (built Aug 30 2012)) with ESMTPSA id <0MYU00L4BUUA3I00@smtpauth4.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Fri, 03 Jan 2014 20:27:48 -0600 (CST) Message-id: <52C771A1.9080207@freebsd.org> Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2014 21:27:45 -0500 From: Nathan Whitehorn User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.2.0 To: precutcolours@mailcan.com, freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Install Tips for Newbie with FreeBSD 10 References: <1388713046.8058.65995889.43FA6F1D@webmail.messagingengine.com> <52C6288F.7050106@freebsd.org> <1388742923.13075.66094133.4ECA9B2B@webmail.messagingengine.com> <52C6C6A5.1020404@freebsd.org> <1388799661.21741.66383497.2BE461E1@webmail.messagingengine.com> In-reply-to: <1388799661.21741.66383497.2BE461E1@webmail.messagingengine.com> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.6 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.17 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 04 Jan 2014 02:27:50 -0000 On 01/03/14 20:41, precutcolours@mailcan.com wrote: > Nathan you are helpful, prompt, and appreciated. > > GPT allows the hard disk to boot other systems. That said, my work desktop is a G5 machine, which boots off a UFS / partition and then has a large fraction of the remaining data on ZFS (partially on APM, partially on GPT), so I can at least guarantee that works. If you are feeling adventurous, what I would suggest you do is the following. It's a little baroque, but I can promise you it works. Other people on the list could probably provide a pure-ZFS solution if you would prefer. 1) Install to the USB stick with the regular installer so that you have a bootable read-write system to play with. Just pressing enter repeatedly should do the right things. Then reboot from the stick. 2) Format the internal disk as you please. Typical setup to dedicate the whole disk to ZFS with a GPT partition map would be something like: gpart destroy -F ada0 (removes old formatting) gpart create -s gpt ada0 gpart add -t freebsd-zfs ada0 zpool create tank ada0 zfs create tank/usr zfs create tank/usr 3) Copy (cp -pRP) the contents of /usr to /tank/usr, and the same with /var. You could probably reextract the distfiles as well, but cp is easier. 4) change mountpoints on the ZFS file systems to be /usr, /var, /home, etc. for whichever bits you want. For example: zfs set -o mountpoint=/usr tank/usr 5) set zfs_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf Now you're all done. Of the system directories, I'd only put /usr and /var on ZFS. Moving, say, /bin, will make single-user-mode less friendly and cause weird and unpleasant things to happen. The setup instructions seem not very baroque. Thanks. I'm glad to hear you use a G5 too. I guess I want the powerpc64 download when 10 final ships. My real frill is putting $HOME into RAM-based fs. Having volatile $HOME auto-populated from disk at boot is a script job, unless BSD has something, maybe some kind of unionfs. I prefer basic rsync, myself, as the point of RAM is to bypass disk activity.
