It looks like someone uploaded an older version of the Handbook to Amazon. = That version has since been removed and we have asked the uploader to impro= ve the quality of the Kindle version and use their own name, rather than th= e FreeBSD Documentation Project, if they upload it again so as not to confu= se readers. Currently, we're not generating an epub or a Kindle version of the Handbook= . We spent a lot of time last year getting the Handbook up-to-date and have= a bit more work to do on that front. The plan in doing so is to have a mod= ernized, dead tree edition available through the FreeBSD Mall, as the last = published version was over 10 years ago, as well as an epub version availab= le for sale where the proceeds go directly to the FreeBSD Foundation.=20 At one point there was a mechanism to automatically generate the Handbook i= n various formats, but it's my understanding that we are only doing HTML at= this time. This is something we'll be discussing at the doc working group = and sprints during BSDCan in June. If you happen to be attending that confe= rence, feel free to join the doc sprints each evening :-) Cheers, Dru From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 24 22:46:25 2015 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher AECDH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 1F74772A for ; Tue, 24 Feb 2015 22:46:25 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-ie0-f170.google.com (mail-ie0-f170.google.com [209.85.223.170]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E0550760 for ; Tue, 24 Feb 2015 22:46:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: by iecvy18 with SMTP id vy18so143509iec.6 for ; Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:46:18 -0800 (PST) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to :subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=Z7AgOlnK40GKa1RW0IC81uL4H6fz6unt42ZACWkDLMA=; b=IOWKHceBwbJKdmjKYbjFf/ngz7nAKQMnKZ/0RO6HwWyG2TiV/oZWWiQAh9M4NUnN3d /NmZtc2sHo1Z3159yARDzp/1XrzqWA1gAzoM+2atx3A05NYK97PRbcLYIAln1RjJFMBk DJGt78N++3LmgJomRAit65PAUjiWk13h7QTtJSI3tTR6uHtXEoGzlWpyeiQUt0BtWEqZ ZX2xVpWHBhFEYcnysr5yNs0hhH142lPBO7g8E8AoujD8iKIwjkof3/2lbHhF12MipxgO HaXyvGnPmMwSPSoGnX/R92oJnkgs0vCD4M5gOwKwFSdSrqWbPtWRoH6orAtecILSwsmb GMTA== X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQkF/CMAKasH6O0pVRNWZ3CiYHVPlww0bIxD5NKehO5VQDdT0h02yt9h2CwP991lNbQhRyFw X-Received: by 10.42.64.197 with SMTP id h5mr692595ici.12.1424817978449; Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:46:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from [150.156.210.202] ([150.156.210.202]) by mx.google.com with ESMTPSA id ig15sm8708970igb.10.2015.02.24.14.46.17 for (version=TLSv1.2 cipher=ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 bits=128/128); Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:46:18 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <54ECFE2B.7020609@sunyit.edu> Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2015 17:41:47 -0500 From: Rob User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/31.4.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Pages regarding IDS configuration Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18-1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2015 22:46:25 -0000 To whom it may concern, My capstone project is installing and writing documentation for installing Snort and or Suricata on FreeBSD 10. My partner and I are interested in knowing if this can be published to the FreeBSD handbook. Our goal is to write generic documentation regarding what we have learned, possible pitfalls and to create a standard installation procedure. Currently we are weeding through several tutorials some have conflicting directions. Our write up will hopefully prevent others from entering these configuration loops. Thanks, another point to freebsd (not yet user, thoough), but I found a section which could be missing one paragraph, maybe? here https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/zfs-term.html#zfs-term-vdev ...is RAID-Z2 description missing? /"RAID-Z/ - ZFS implements RAID-Z, a variation on standard RAID-5 that offers better distribution of parity and eliminates the "RAID-5 write hole" in which the data and parity information become inconsistent after an unexpected restart. ZFS supports three levels of RAID-Z which provide varying levels of redundancy in exchange for decreasing levels of usable storage. The types are named RAID-Z1 through RAID-Z3 based on the number of parity devices in the array and the number of disks which can fail while the pool remains operational. In a RAID-Z1 configuration with four disks, each 1 TB, usable storage is 3 TB and the pool will still be able to operate in degraded mode with one faulted disk. If an additional disk goes offline before the faulted disk is replaced and resilvered, all data in the pool can be lost. In a RAID-Z3 configuration with eight disks of 1 TB, the volume will provide 5 TB of usable space and still be able to operate with three faulted disks. Sun^(TM) recommends no more than nine disks in a single vdev. If the configuration has more disks, it is recommended to divide them into separate vdevs and the pool data will be striped across them. A configuration of two RAID-Z2 vdevs consisting of 8 disks each would create something similar to a RAID-60 array. A RAID-Z group's storage capacity is approximately the size of the smallest disk multiplied by the number of non-parity disks. Four 1 TB disks in RAID-Z1 has an effective size of approximately 3 TB, and an array of eight 1 TB disks in RAID-Z3 will yield 5 TB of usable space." I wanted to assure that pkgs dependent upon the php5 pkg were also updated. So I read the man page for pkg-install and saw the option -R, --from-root When used with -f, reinstalls any packages that require the given package. When I saw the mention of -f, I scratched my head, what was the man page trying to tell me. Not liking to force anything, I ran the command without -f. Here's what I saw: # pkg install -R php5 Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue... FreeBSD repository is up-to-date. All repositories are up-to-date. The following 8 packages will be affected (of 0 checked): Installed packages to be UPGRADED: php5: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 php5-gettext: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 squirrelmail: 20140420 -> 20141107 php5-session: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 php5-xml: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 php5-openssl: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 php5-hash: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 php5-mbstring: 5.4.30 -> 5.4.37 The process will require 14 KiB more space. 3 MiB to be downloaded. Proceed with this action? [y/N]: y [lots of installation output removed] That is exactly what I wanted to happen, i.e., install php5 and install all the pkgs that are dependent upon it. So now I wonder, what is the purpose of the -f option, if I the dependent packages were installed by just specifying -R. Obviously, I'm confused and may not have read the intent of the -R documentation correctly. Maybe it can be clarified to better explain what happens with and without the -f being specified? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
