The command in FreeBSD wiki page, "A_Brief_Guide_To_Cross_Compiling_FreeBSD" (https://wiki.freebsd.org/A_Brief_Guide_To_Cross_Compiling_FreeBSD) seems to be wrong. In the "Build World" section of the "Building and Installing World" part, it says; % make buildworld TARGET=arm TARGET_ARCH=armeb MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/home/bob/obj But, for some reason, setting MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX as a command line argument should not be done as that is described in man page build(7). The correct one is below; % MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/home/bob/obj make buildworld TARGET=arm TARGET_ARCH=armeb or exporting it as a persistent environment variable, % export MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/home/bob/obj % make buildworld TARGET=arm TARGET_ARCH=armeb This problem of failing cross compiling is reported a few times. https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-bugs/2015-January/059735.html http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.os.freebsd.stable/91829 https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2014-January/255447.html I encountered the same problem as the last one. I don't know why the original author wrote such a command and if it works in some particular environment or not. It has been sanctioned in the category of best server OS. Some other sites sanctioned together with FreeBSD.org are OpenBSD.org for providing a desktop OS, NetBSD.org for powering toasters, and nginx.org for an engine with an X (not sure what that means, anyone?). http://We.Are.Sanctioned.RU/ Regardless, everyone, please keep up the good work! And feel free to nominate other web-sites with #SanctionedRU! Cheers, Constantine. perks into a question rather than its own section - stop directing people to email me directly and instead direct people to email the liasion alias [eadler] fonts: modernize - remove dead links - document vt style fonts (barely) [eadler] fbsd-from-scratch: remove it - it references sysinstall, which is gone - the scripts used to install the system use pkg_add not pkg - and are rotted in other ways - the limitations of sysinstall have been somewhat mitigated by bsdinstall (which can install into a new directory) - it warns of outdated stuff (acroread8 doesn't exist anymore) - package building takes place on runnning system and not on poudriere - many of the packages referenced don't exist or are vastly changed - it incorrectly installs the base system - and more Discussed with: Yes. xorg-server does not use HAL by default any more. I'm tempted to just remove the HAL/DBUS part of the quick start. Really, the whole Xorg installation section needs a rewrite. I'd like to see that happen as well, mainly because of my dislike of the extra HAL dependency. Warren, maybe we can work on this on Phabricator? If you can provide your outline we can get it moving towards a handbook patch sooner. Maybe involving the ports people as well is also helpful because they should know what needs to be in there (dependency-wise) and what not. At present, that is for Gnome and KDE. For that matter, Gnome not automatically installing HAL as a dependency is a bug that should be reported to the Gnome port maintainers.
