It turned out that there was some kind of breakage in my /usr/src, which I verified by exporting r279520 to /usr/src_279520 and then compiling and installing a new kernel from there. This kernel then worked correctly. BUT! I *must* set dma_bits in xhci.c to 32, otherwise enumeration fails miserably. I suspect that the problem reported recently in a 10.1 (?) PR is also due to dma_bits being set to 64, since IIRC the reporter has the same JMicron USB3 bridge chip in his box. So, HPS, how about an option or quirk to force dma_bits to 32 for us poor users stuck with this brain-damaged JMicron chip? -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 2 16:23:02 2015 Return-Path: Delivered-To: usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher AECDH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4D84B754 for ; Mon, 2 Mar 2015 16:23:02 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail.turbocat.net (mail.turbocat.net [IPv6:2a01:4f8:d16:4514::2]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 1066EDC5 for ; Mon, 2 Mar 2015 16:23:02 +0000 (UTC) Received: from laptop015.home.selasky.org (cm-176.74.213.204.customer.telag.net [176.74.213.204]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mail.turbocat.net (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id F1AC71FE022; Mon, 2 Mar 2015 17:22:59 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <54F48E94.7030200@selasky.org> Date: Mon, 02 Mar 2015 17:23:48 +0100 From: Hans Petter Selasky User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/31.4.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: gljennjohn@gmail.com, usb@freebsd.org Subject: Re: enumeration failure of disks in external box redux References: <20150302164907.3ab2eac6@ernst.home> In-Reply-To: <20150302164907.3ab2eac6@ernst.home> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18-1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 02 Mar 2015 16:23:02 -0000 On 03/02/15 16:49, Gary Jennejohn wrote: > I spent most of the day doing a binary search to find out which > commit broke enumeration of the disks in my external disk box, > which is using the JMicron USB3 bridge chip. > > It turned out that there was some kind of breakage in my > /usr/src, which I verified by exporting r279520 to > /usr/src_279520 and then compiling and installing a new kernel > from there. I currently study masters in Embedded systems at KTH Royal Institute of technology. I have around 4 years of experience in Embedded system and 2 and half years of experience in Embedded Linux board bring up , Device drivers and Linux Applications developement after my bechelors degree in Electronics . I have the working knowledge of USB stack implementation in Linux kernel and reasonably good understanding of their major USB device classes classification with transfer types and commands and their data structures . So I am interested to do this project , I kindly request you to provide more details on what are the expected deliverables i need to contribute and some documentation links for open source para-virtualised drivers for FreeBSD . So I will come up with Milestone tasks and tollgate design decisions in my subsequent mails for this project to prepare a project plan. thanks and best regards gokul From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 7 13:06:35 2015 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher AECDH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 43170EB9 for ; Sat, 7 Mar 2015 13:06:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 29199A79 for ; Sat, 7 Mar 2015 13:06:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.14.9/8.14.9) with ESMTP id t27D6ZlH017378 for ; Sat, 7 Mar 2015 13:06:35 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 196323] Thinkpad usb keyboard with integrated mouse requires a usb quirk Date: Sat, 07 Mar 2015 13:06:34 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: usb X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: linimon@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Target-Milestone: --- X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: assigned_to component Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18-1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 07 Mar 2015 13:06:35 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=196323 Mark Linimon changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Assignee|freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org |freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Component|misc |usb -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Do you have any links to some previous USB work you've done? The FreeBSD USB stack is I/O-vectored while the Linux USB one is not. Also the FreeBSD USB stack is dual-mode, both Host and Device? If you want we could arrange a time to talk a bit about a GSoc 2015 project involving USB and FreeBSD. I believe I am on 10 stable - as noted in my uname below (FreeBSD 10.1-STABLE #0 r279138) - which has me a bit confused when you ask me to "upgrade to 10-stable". When I download the patch to xhci.c and replace the existing one - it does not build. I put the old xhci.c back and svn updated /usr/src and rebuilt+installed the kernel - which I presume picked up the change you listed right before this message.
