When it came to partitioning I choose to install to a mirrored ZFS pool. FBSD seemed to install fine but when I rebooted out of t= he installer and removed the memory stick I installed from I got the error sho= wn in the attached screenshot. Boot doesn't even get as far as the Beastie bootloader menu. Note that I only used standard partitioning and installati= on options that are available within bsdinstall - I didn't drop to the termina= l to run extra zfs commands etc. I noticed that there were three gptzfsboot errors being highlighted so I wondered what would happen if I re-inserted my installation USB drive and t= ried booting again? Lo and behold, FreeBSD 11 boots from my mirrored ZFS pool but only if I have my USB drive inserted. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Mon Jul 18 11:10:43 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 31533B9A84A for ; On the first boot with the new kernel I began experiencing problems with the USB subsystem -- specifically, neither my USB keyboard nor USB mouse work anymore. Instead I get several warnings in the logs (and on the console): Jul 18 12:16:47 ren kernel: usbd_setup_device_desc: getting device descript= or at addr 1 failed, USB_ERR_TIMEOUT Jul 18 12:17:19 ren last message repeated 3 times Jul 18 12:17:30 ren kernel: usbd_setup_device_desc: getting device descript= or at addr 1 failed, USB_ERR_TIMEOUT Jul 18 12:17:30 ren kernel: ugen0.2: at usbus0 (disconnected) Jul 18 12:17:30 ren kernel: uhub_reattach_port: could not allocate new devi= ce When I boot without keyboard and mouse the machine boots as quickly as it usually does and I see no obvious error messages. I completed the upgrade process by calling "freebsd-update install" again to install the userspace stuff. Rebooted. Did another fetch and install to m= ake sure I was up to date. I searched online for the problem and found this thread: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2016-February/059767.ht= ml and tried the suggested solution (tweak to /boot/loader.conf). It had no effect, so I removed it. I have attached dmesg output of two boot cycles -- the first with the keybo= ard (and the errors), and the second without. In both cases, the XHCI and EHCI controllers appear to be recognized without error. usbconfig confirms: ugen1.1: at usbus1, cfg=3D0 md=3DHOST spd=3DHIGH (480= Mbps) pwr=3DSAVE (0mA) ugen0.1: at usbus0, cfg=3D0 md=3DHOST spd=3DSUPER (5= .0Gbps) pwr=3DSAVE (0mA) ugen1.2: at usbus1, cfg=3D0 md=3DHOST spd=3D= HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=3DSAVE (0mA) I want to emphasize that the keyboard and mouse are the same units as prior= to the upgrade and were working with 10.2 without issue so this isn't strictly= a hardware compatibility issue. Something changed in the 10.3 USB subsystem = that breaks select (low speed in this case) USB device instantiation. Note also that I am plugging the keyboard and mouse into the rear ports of = the NUC, which I believe are USB2 only. The Superspeed ports are on the front.= I tried plugging the keyboard into the superspeed ports and I have the same problem. The devices won't instantiate. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Mon Jul 18 18:43:03 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E70CDB9D008 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:43:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D7147137C for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:43:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u6IIh3NG045214 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:43:03 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211186] Cannot boot mirrored zpool under 11.0 BETA1 Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:43:04 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: misc X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.0-BETA1 X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: allcoms@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:31:38 +0000 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.22 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:43:04 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D211186 --- Comment #2 from Dan MacDonald --- Hi Steven I ran: gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ada0 gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ada1 and that fixed booting w/o having my USB drive inserted for the next boot b= ut unfortunately it was for the next boot only. When I had Arch installed to a mirrored ZFS pool and booting with grub on t= his same machine I was able to unplug either drive and have it successfully boo= t so its not a hardware prob. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Mon Jul 18 18:49:52 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 38885B9D16A for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:49:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 1E1FA16F1 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:49:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u6IInpra053729 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:49:51 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211205] USB_ERR_TIMEOUT errors after upgrade from 10.2 Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:49:52 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: usb X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.3-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: hselasky@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: cc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:52 +0000 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.22 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 18:49:52 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D211205 Hans Petter Selasky changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |hselasky@FreeBSD.org --- Comment #1 from Hans Petter Selasky --- Hi, If you copy sys/dev/usb/controller/xhci*.[ch] from 10.2 to 10.3 and build a= new kernel - does the problem go away? --HPS --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Mon Jul 18 19:24:26 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99589B9DDA5 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:24:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 892B01488 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:24:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u6IJOQk6062514 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:24:26 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211186] Cannot boot mirrored zpool under 11.0 BETA1 Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:24:26 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: misc X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.0-BETA1 X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: smh@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:49:08 +0000 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.22 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:24:26 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D211186 --- Comment #3 from Steven Hartland --- If that worked are you sure that both disks are configured as the boot devi= ces in the BIOS? I've seen it before that attaching a USB boot device messed with the BIOS b= oot options rendering it unable to boot the next time. Another potential issue is if the BIOS has a RAID option that's enabled it could be corrupting the boot blocks somehow, but that's a long shot. On final interesting thing would be to compare the boot blocks to see if something has corrupted them, that and output from gpart show. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Mon Jul 18 19:48:07 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5CC9B9D388 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id B5BD81337 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u6IJm7OA009330 for ; Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:07 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211205] USB_ERR_TIMEOUT errors after upgrade from 10.2 Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:07 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: usb X-Bugzilla-Version: 10.3-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: dwvcfii@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 20:12:52 +0000 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.22 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:48:07 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D211205 --- Comment #2 from Doug --- Not sure I want to just blindly copy the entire 10.2 USB subsystem inside a 10.3 tree. Even if it works, it doesn't tell me much other than someone ho= sed the 10.3 USB subsystem....which is pretty much what I know already. This is not a hardware fault. Therefore it must be a software problem. In any case, the original 10.2 tree was deleted during the upgrade so I'd h= ave to seek out that source and build a custom 10.3 kernel with the USB subsyst= em replaced with 10.2 stuff. Not work I have time for at the moment, but I wi= ll put it on my list. My BIOS doesn't have any RAID features. I can basically enable/disable individual ports, choose the SATA gen (1,2 or 3) or disable onboard SATA entirely. To clarify the errors a bit, the BIOS drives bit of the error screen varies between 3 and 4 drives depending on if I have the USB drive inserted but it shows 3 gptzfsboot lba errors every time. I'd imagine the 4th 'BIOS drive' = is the memory card reader that's integrated into the case. For example, the comma= nds # pw user add someuser -g somegroup -d "/home/someuser" -s "/usr/sbin/nolog= in" # pw user del someuser -r Won't core dump. /home/someuser doesn't exist, and the problematic code nev= er runs. In your example the home directory was "/dev/null", which *does* exist even though -m wasn't specified. The program uses openat(2) with the O_DIRECTORY flag to open "/dev/null" which is not a directory. openat() returns an unchecked error, and the program crashes when it tries to open the invalid descriptor. I was able to reproduce this in the master branch on the Github repo. I attached a patch for the rm_r() function to check the return value of opena= t(). It looks like openat()'s return value isn't checked in a couple other locat= ions in the code as well. Those code paths may not be accessible though. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Wed Jul 20 22:39:53 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 820EBBA0426 for ; I can con= nect to wireless network, obtain IP address, and usually transmit a few bits bef= ore I start to get timeouts. Ping works even when other types of traffic don't = (e.g pkg update or fetch). Is there some ifconfig knob I could tweak? Or something else in order to ma= ke it work reliably? Any help appreciated. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Sat Jul 23 10:20:05 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BDF97BA19D6 for ;
