IEEE Spectrum just published an article regarding new inter-core communications hardware developed by researchers at UNC funded by Intel: http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconductors/processors/breaking-the-multicore-bottleneck The article doesn't go into great detail, but suggests that the new hardware might be useful to accelerate network packet processing -- perhaps especially in FreeBSD, whose unique Netgraph drivers are already set up to handle packets in a similar fashion. Could this be fodder for a future FreeBSD Foundation-sponsored coding effort? --Brett Glass
