I saw this thread on the forums: https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/13998/ and while I am not really willing to leave FreeBSD to go anywhere. I just got here; even though I am having apple specific hardware issues. I really like the simplicity of FreeBSD and plan to stick around. I am a meddling developer whose made some games, and apps as well as some other larger software projects. With all of that out of the way. I would like to make Midi and synths work on FreeBSD but it seems like they are pretty much all tied to Jack or ALSA which kinda sucks in FreeBSD land. I don't need complicated tools to make music and don't mind building more complicated tools as I go but to be honest I don't know where to start. I really liked seq24: http://www.filter24.org/seq24/ but it has a license that, well.... Anyways if I could start with something as simple as that, which would allow me to record midi data. I have an Akai mpk mini mp2 that I can use. This could touch on a lot of different aspects from writing device drivers up to writing programs and then actually composing music. Which I think would be really awesome. even with something as simple as something like seq24 up and running and zynaddsubfx up and running I could start making music but as it stands right now I cannot, why? Because they both rely on JACKD and even though I've installed jack and run it as root user and all applications as root user they just don't seem to see each other and are able to connect. I am willing to do the heavy lifting here, if I can get some guidance from this list from time to time. Is this list active, anyone here with experience who might see some flaws in what I've already written above and can point me in the right direction? I've already looked at the oss development guide v4 and while I am not a sound programmer, I can follow what's going on. So, any feedback to get started? If nobody else should be able to help you, the following might help you, to decide using another operating system. Back in 2012 I installed FreeBSD, because I experienced issues with a RME HDSPe AIO sound card running Linux. On FreeBSD I got audio working with too much latency for real-time usage. IIRC I didn't tested MIDI, however, it's possible to experience an amount of MIDI jitter, that renders MIDI unusable for making music, since MIDI jitter already is an issue for real-time capable PCs. BSD and Linux are niches and audio for making music is a niche inside the niche, or words to that effect said by one of the more prominently Linux audio developers about Linux. Consider to dual-boot/multi-boot FreeBSD and Linux and to use Linux for MIDI applications, using the Linux kernel with boot option 'threadirqs' or using linux-rt, a patched kernel. Hi, Most people will not notice or care about delays less than 1-2ms for MIDI when playing a MIDI piano or MIDI organ. BTW: A good organ player should be capable of handling up to several hundred milliseconds of delay in big rooms when doing live performances. Delay is sometimes good and realistic. Sound waves are not like radio waves exactly :-) --HPS From owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Sun Oct 2 22:54:27 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8695AAF2423 for ; Sun, 2 Oct 2016 22:54:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm29-vm8.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com (nm29-vm8.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com [212.82.97.77]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id F1176F39 for ; Sun, 2 Oct 2016 22:54:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s2048; t=1475448858; bh=gT1SLVttKLY337g833zLtRz6Siiw1MsmMHxCUB3NNlo=; h=Date:From:To:Subject:In-Reply-To:References:From:Subject; b=HCHP2ZicbDVAG0QHi7MUbAkmzD7hZuet5fcjipztIRWLa+KVNtand5U+1N5QWRB+k9go4aicdnCeWS6gj+tAGlznq/pp7KsWtHF7LyfR1OOjWvqFzTU7qZ7YIG7GA4L9Ld7j/PZsjEnKp9+ufCH8Ru0pCIP6i9P3bS+vjChh1KN1DPJg500w0gGqShpmdEuaEAS7qUZ/AF6TyP6OhOApDxX8yF6ek270OSQh7XSc/7GOHeKlTXJ2GxriY+7UqJcCn6OQAJlNBg6IJj48SvNN6HkDvilwTxU32g9gt492usj5WlsYDJzG++IKtfpPye6dicgILrB+uz0lw7CaFGJlsQ== Received: from [212.82.98.124] by nm29.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 02 Oct 2016 22:54:18 -0000 Received: from [46.228.39.93] by tm17.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 02 Oct 2016 22:54:18 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp130.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 02 Oct 2016 22:54:18 -0000 X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 261977.33217.bm@smtp130.mail.ir2.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: L7kszlIVM1kXGwXMV6C.tuQ4aQtYu_rLf2kGMUjHud0MZjG cfxgZ2bda4atqo6t92RpDjQU2TOjskjLGCJWTvaIl3_C40u.jlZZ_OtdwwLT 7FrdC3OVrqzICGjENjPQevC296.VeAbK6ggn8_VVsxtBlpIWwZu2_EFCOAeA uw52C6eTmoo6qiLrxKYkrwLxr5ES.CnsP.0HPdd2DY7TWqRebctwPJZ1a4g3 YA7e4m8vxDzoMC.D9ggHKCqMH3WMC18w5qPTTN9vT1HfAy5u3vfsmL3vbH2_ SDWpFLglj0CXlWeO38o6uA5xO0z_oCz4UJ1ElS7Kz0u.Csvfr0J3Cc5JqpUq M5px4OmsOGEOciUBMqNLdZfXzej6Kd_apxXNsbMOMrIMkO7IU2puPH4heysp T0ggh8pEjG3yCSFbs4XlljhDL_BbEhaT0Pu5vT5AAd79tMEYJl2PdOTBClf6 Bu1q4KtoAlmH4Yje4THWhkG5NDbLJrMRD_V31M6VYmdWJuBzl0bBJf3CY0xs iqqFUNg1TfovhEA7M_e6VrzgfriO6q38w2e.RhDT204X10I8wtDSLulaxMRA vBqrIpMMFuSOd2JqTxe_8fVeU9jkOHv4- X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- Date: Mon, 3 Oct 2016 00:54:15 +0200 From: Ralf Mardorf To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Midi and Music Composition on FreeBSD Message-ID: <20161003005415.03e3edda@archlinux.localdomain> In-Reply-To: References: <20161002165348.0600b4d3@archlinux.localdomain> X-Mailer: Claws Mail 3.14.0-2-ge48b739 (GTK+ 2.24.31; x86_64-arch-linux-gnu) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 02 Oct 2016 22:54:27 -0000 On Sun, 2 Oct 2016 22:21:22 +0200, Hans Petter Selasky wrote: >Most people will not notice or care about delays less than 1-2ms for >MIDI when playing a MIDI piano or MIDI organ. I'm not talking about delay, but MIDI jitter. Indeed as long as you won't record percussive sounds by one external synth after the other, playing those percussive sounds in unison, then 2 ms jitter are tolerable. >BTW: A good organ player should be capable of handling up to several >hundred milliseconds of delay in big rooms when doing live >performances. Apart from this, the time required from the sound source to the ears is something to add where ever and whatever you are playing, this is not the latency caused by the used gear. Computer musicians usually require a latency <= 11 ms caused by the gear. I don't know what tendencies FreeBSD has got regarding MIDI jitter, but the audio latency I experienced IIRC was > 100 ms, such a latency caused by the gear makes live playing impossible. A latency of several hundreds milliseconds caused by the gear is grotesque and it's still absurd, if you add the travel time of a large hall, http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-soundpath.htm , let alone that in most cases the musicians are close to the sound source, but even in a church, where the organist is far away from the sound source. Does this mean you haven't tried again with more recent software, incl. updates to audio and USB, mostly by hps@ ? Perhaps with your expert knowledge of audio, and MIDI, you could help with development on FreeBSD, rather than saying 'use something else'? cheers, Ian From owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Mon Oct 3 08:44:59 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2826CAF3C57 for ; Mon, 3 Oct 2016 08:44:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm21-vm1.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com (nm21-vm1.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com [212.82.96.252]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 47F21B71 for ; Mon, 3 Oct 2016 08:44:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s2048; t=1475484173; bh=XXUXby0TXKF6VDmijvUmYQXutdhL1wXIZEyhFuWAoQQ=; h=Date:From:To:Subject:In-Reply-To:References:From:Subject; b=G4A2rQF1chVY6MJEkqKHwdFVntt4h+eqMBOfqfm36gi5ClN4d+FvKXZsvp6fjkN3UKcGCWCKbDiEBvHDchi2E8Er8Vxvrw2BiVOtFctSIC+Zoo35pDOZbvOl+LNzRMArsH+kqtrw5itpVAhW+JSgIN0zBT2DwLnv1PU/BElBTlLMlXrRdLFEU6cNutAxuV52uJW5BTABHPWqG8roDeHp9Ig22V39GT1+N0+uGGwpsy4EpzI6KDbVOu5wjMMihQa3iRujujiiNOAv7gKmdgbqFobUXIHmiZHOZLqm9eK6WyPXl3hYxDGS9Sj81BzNjpa3fwsLU1gdK9bdLxiqs+t3KA== Received: from [212.82.98.125] by nm21.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 03 Oct 2016 08:42:53 -0000 Received: from [46.228.39.76] by tm18.bullet.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 03 Oct 2016 08:42:52 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp113.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 03 Oct 2016 08:42:52 -0000 X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 542589.49265.bm@smtp113.mail.ir2.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: Wdo0WgYVM1mDaxEcTwT.r6.uztCCoihTd7_lMttcyuwRpvS YFB1XMlq0.c_RVwTwqd8nahOzCBI50aFsJukc3HQIyTQXLIsNHhZ9Gn5Mg2e eZkplZ3FKI8nEVcabGoVOl7TxbN5OanqJFQwiEC47oLr9FsjQ6L2D97NO8_G YjaEJpxjgX4bLpAmt3WPowRpxvsS7c0PsiROMaXpnoKVcE.M5PT7bcqBcNrb 0z8Y8BbC7m8SQBlrbW8DU44u6oeELTyTi08pdMhmZCqw08j7lY7vh6xoqmqG TspPPNVjjAXzM19Jf2g5kOmBQN_490P8Wqep2pid1srObjqjWLZSc1mSk7.Y DKXcBxuwaLaGh8O8N61fbM5t9NgDd9Vf5x0ax3JYADfWODWyQ.60YXvoT3Yu ew3OKyT9yUduAMCLo1M93doJ1Wich9PNY3_UhEcy5XRSu2OMAO6smjiCjLLB yVIDV_buyZ38Jo5dToS4PwbYp9gqo2xmrNeGMS4J39a09p8wRIDtrHz25D71 .WZa9IksM16yXshpMw61xf46Bq.P3sCakaZobJH9lehbDtty9BGCO6lJ4pcV 8vJ7P0OFNFpUadxZWuly0fJrl5ILBLq0- X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- Date: Mon, 3 Oct 2016 10:42:51 +0200 From: Ralf Mardorf To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Midi and Music Composition on FreeBSD Message-ID: <20161003104251.15edd955@archlinux.localdomain> In-Reply-To: <20161003181205.S6806@sola.nimnet.asn.au> References: <20161002165348.0600b4d3@archlinux.localdomain> <20161003181205.S6806@sola.nimnet.asn.au> X-Mailer: Claws Mail 3.14.0-2-ge48b739 (GTK+ 2.24.31; x86_64-arch-linux-gnu) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 Oct 2016 08:44:59 -0000 On Mon, 3 Oct 2016 18:23:31 +1100 (EST), Ian Smith wrote: >Seems you're quite often trying to steer people towards using linux >instead .. Yes, but only in regards to music. CNC machines might be affected, too, but I'm not a CNC user. One reason for his is "hard real-time" for audio, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_operating_system_kernels#Featur= e_overview . In regards to MIDI "hard"-real-time anyway isn't granted for a PC what ever OS you are using, since it requires direct access to the ports, as we had programming Assembler on old non-multi-task computers, such as the C64. However, some people have good look and their PC provides good MIDI abilities. Another reason are the missing mixers for prosumer and professional sound cards. Already the Linux version of totalmix, named hdspmixer, is completely outdated, but at least it works, to e.g. make usage of latency free hardware monitoring. There are several mixers, such as the envy24 mixers, too. Those mixers are part of ALSA. Something like hdspmixer, https://ccrma.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/user/nando/hdspmixer.png , can't be replaced by software mixers, since it enables all the possible hardware routing, including latency free hardware monitoring. If somebody has got a question in regards to e.g. firefox, you might see that I try to help solving a problem and perhaps post Linux output, because music is my domain, I'm usually not booted to FreeBSD and it's also not a maintained install, for the very same reason, but I try not to steer away a firefox user from FreeBSD. Anyway, is somebody is able to help the OP to use FreeBSD for the mentioned needs, I welcome it and I'll care a lot about such information myself, but Linux already isn't that easy to use for audio, while if for sure has got the better infrastructure for this purpose. The OP's needs using a simple sequencer and a virtual synth make much more fun when using at least a second-hand prosumer audio device, e.g. an Envy24 based card from a well known auctions website for 35,-=E2=82=AC. = Such a card is not as good as an expensive professional card, but already provides useful features a consumer device doesn't provide, but you need the hardware mixer for the device, to benefit from those advantages. We get both Linux and FreeBSD for free as in beer, both are more or less similar in regards to an UNIX, POSIX, FLOSS approach and by a dual-boot/multi-boot you can run them side by side. As an audio engineer and musician I'm using what is able to do the job, if possible FLOSS, but on a tablet PC I even use a fruit orientated proprietary operating system to make music.
