I have found out from using my haswell 4600 hd graphics, if I use xorg
server version 1.17.4 I must use a modeline in the monitor section of my
xorg.conf file (I actually split up the sections into different files and
stuck them in the xorg.conf.d folder). I think the driver from xorg is too
old to recognize my monitors 1600x900 mode and so xorg doesn't start.

The other option is to consider taking xorg server 1.18.4 out for a test
drive. If you scroll down the freebsd graphics wiki to the section titled
Ports development repository, it contains hyperlinks to the git repository
and instructions how to clone it and create a patch to apply to your ports
tree. The xorg server 1.18.4 repo has an updated intel driver that works
well for me, although of course YRMV.
