I could confirm this observation, but it seems to be working again now (22:30 CET). For example: https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/releases/amd64/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/11.1/ This contains a file listing. The "corresponding" FTP site also has the files: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/ISO-IMAGES/11.1/ > Observations suggest the infrastructure is working but all files were deleted. Comparable performance can be achieved by turning= it back on, which leads me to the conclusion that our regex(3) is the source of slowdown in this instance. I think this leads me to two conclusions: 1.) Our regex(3) implementation needs optimized or replaced 2.) We need to improve our usage of regex(3) These are both important, but #2 is something we've been needing to do anyw= ays and probably the lower-hanging fruit. I think this would be accomplished by calling regex(3) less with larger chunks of text, rather than breaking up t= ext line-by-line. This would allow us to take advantage of the optimizations to= be had with larger subject strings and reduce the overhead (in most cases) by = no longer having to search for all newlines. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Wed Nov 15 01:25:19 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 82060DBB37B for ; If stage* is run with multiple processes the order of entries in the mtree file may be nondeterministic, and the resulting package tbz also had nondeterministic file ordering. The mtree file generated by -DNO_ROOT builds consists of one line per file, with the filename starting in the first column, so is easily sorted. There's one exception: the first line of the mtree file is a comment, but the # character sorts before the filenames anyhow and needs no special treatment. When doi= ng routine zfs setup testing (pulling a disk to verify pool integrity), while a write operation is in progress to the storage pool, a kernel panic is experienced. I assume that would allow ZFS to realize that something is wrong. Retrying forever is not always a rational = or useful behavior. no_path_retry: A numeric value for this attribute specifies the number of times the system should attempt to use a failed path before disabling queuing. A value of fail indicates immediate failure, without queuing. A value of queue indicates that queuing should not stop until the path is fixed. I just set up a new FreeBSD server with dual HBAs, dual SAS expander backplanes, etc., using gmultipath. I am on the verge of migrating the serv= er to Ubuntu and ZFS on Linux just to avoid this issue - particularly seeing t= hat it was reported years ago and there has been no movement. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Fri Nov 17 20:04:54 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E131CDE245D for ; Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:04:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C4FA573A7B for ; Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:04:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vAHK4soL008982 for ; Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:04:54 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 223722] update linsysfs to include /sys/class/net data Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:04:54 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: new X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: cneirabustos@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: bug_id short_desc product version rep_platform op_sys bug_status bug_severity priority component assigned_to reporter attachments.created Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:04:55 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D223722 Bug ID: 223722 Summary: update linsysfs to include /sys/class/net data Product: Base System Version: 11.1-RELEASE Hardware: Any OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Only Me Priority: --- Component: kern Assignee: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Reporter: cneirabustos@gmail.com Created attachment 188080 --> https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=3D188080&action= =3Dedit Changes to add /sys/class/net nodes Trying to install Minecraft using https://gameservermanagers.com/ in a Linux jail, the software expects data in /sys/class/net which at the moment is not implemented.(https://dongqixue.blogspot.com/2017/05/linux-kernel-documentat= ion-for.html). This is quite interesting. I think the problem started with r322369 wh= ich changed libutil / pidfile_open() to keep the directory fd (rather than the pidfile fd) so it could unlink the pidfile in capability mode. That appears to conflict with chroot now, because you can't chroot if you've got a directory fd open to somewhere outside the new root. I don't think this patch is right, because it'll break the pidfile_remove()= in routehandler(). I'm not at all sure how this should be fixed though. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sat Nov 18 14:09:02 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C02C2DBBC06 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 14:09:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9C61670BE4 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 14:09:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vAIE92hg085771 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 14:09:02 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 223732] mmap(2) causes unkillable denial of service with specific flags Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 14:09:02 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: new X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: aksyom@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: bug_id short_desc product version rep_platform op_sys bug_status bug_severity priority component assigned_to reporter attachments.created Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 14:09:02 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D223732 Bug ID: 223732 Summary: mmap(2) causes unkillable denial of service with specific flags Product: Base System Version: 11.1-RELEASE Hardware: Any OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Many People Priority: --- Component: kern Assignee: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Reporter: aksyom@gmail.com Created attachment 188093 --> https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=3D188093&action= =3Dedit mmap(2) local denial of service with MAP_STACK|MAP_ALIGNED(N) flags I have found a set of flags that will cause a process to saturate an entire execution unit at 100% median while the process becomes unkillable even with kill -9. Sometimes the process might go under 100% CPU usage, but it gets b= ack too 100% after a while. The process state stays "running". This is effectiv= ely a perfect local denial of service, which cannot be undone by administrators= or counter-intrusion software. The only way to get out of this DoS is to reboot the entire system. Furthermore, if you the process a number of times greater than the number of physical CPU cores available to the system (at least on amd64), the system becomes totally unresponsive, and then only a forced power down from a power button is effective. To reproduce this denial of service, compile the following source code with clang and execute it: #include int main(int argc, char** argv) { void *stack =3D mmap(0, 1<<12, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_STACK|MAP_ALIGNED(12), -1, 0); /* Never reached. * Process will saturate one entire execution unit! * ALSO THIS PROCESS CANNOT BE KILLED!=20 *=20 * DoS manifests when the value of 2nd argument (len)=20 * is less than or equal to 1< Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EE2AEDBDCF8 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:32:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id DC97473945 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:32:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vAIFWrDn022831 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:32:53 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 223732] mmap(2) causes unkillable denial of service with specific flags Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:32:54 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: aksyom@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:32:54 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D223732 --- Comment #1 from Arto Pekkanen --- (In reply to Arto Pekkanen from comment #0) Also an important note (which might not be obvious) is that the user need n= ot be a super user. The open directory allows full access= to the / that dhclient was started from, defeating its chroot to /var/empty. In capability mode where ".." is disallowed, there is still full access to /var/run. It looks like the status quo is that the pidfile will not be removed when dhclient aborts after chrooting. The pidfile_remove() call will always fail. Before r322369 this was the case because of the chroot, and after r322369 t= his was the case because dhclient limits the pidfile descriptor to no rights (so that pidfile_verify() will fail). If this status quo is acceptable, the fix is to close the directory file descriptor using a newly added pidfile(3) function. If the status quo is not acceptable, it could be fixed by adding a not chro= oted non-capmode intermediate process to do the remove or by moving the dhclient pidfile into its own directory and fixing the rights on the pidfile and directory descriptors. The latter also requires an addition to the pidfile(= 3) API. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sat Nov 18 22:30:08 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 11B43DDDFD5 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 22:30:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E6A277FDD4 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 22:30:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vAIMU7sb070536 for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2017 22:30:07 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 223327] dhclient: close the pidfile before calling chroot(2) Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 22:30:07 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: cem@freebsd.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 22:30:08 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D223327 --- Comment #3 from Conrad Meyer --- (In reply to Jilles Tjoelker from comment #2) > In capability mode where ".." is disallowed, there is still full access to > /var/run.
