Bug ID: 236466
Summary: [sendfile]: panic when VOP_READ returns an error
Product: Base System
Version: CURRENT
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Many People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: asomers@FreeBSD.org
sendfile will panic if it can't read the pages it wants to send. This pani=
c is
easily reproducible using FUSE. I've seen the error when the fuse filesyst=
em
returns either EOPNOTSUP or EIO for its read, but presumably it can happen =
with
any sort of read error.

Interestingly, only one other location in tree asserts VM_PAGER_OK, and tha=
t's
when we're swapping a *kernel* stack back into memory (vm_thread_swapin).=20
Panic probably makes sense for that case =E2=80=94 and putting swap on a ne=
twork
filesystem (or FUSE) probably doesn't make sense anyway. If your swap disk
EIOs the kernel stack, at least that thread is hosed. You might be able to
zombie it and limp the system along (Linux approach) but maybe not, either.
Obviously, sendfile(2) is not an appropriate place to assert on the success=
of
vm_pager_get_pages.

Bug ID: 236472
Summary: [FUSE] fuse(4) ignores the max_readahead parameter
Product: Base System
Version: CURRENT
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Many People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: asomers@FreeBSD.org
A FUSE filesystem can request a max_readahead value from the kernel. The
kernel isn't supposed to readahead by more than that many bytes. In
particular, if max_readahead=3D=3D0, then the kernel is supposed to complet=
ely
disable readahead. But fuse(4) currently ignores this value.

You could probably also reproduce fairly easily with a small test case
involving md(4) and gnop(4).

I'm throwing bapt@ on the CC, as the committer of r284881 that
(semi-)intentionally broke this.
Would it make sense to throw in a sanity check that doesn't do the
short-circuit if the path relative to the destination doesn't exist/isn't a
file? It seems we could do this and the bypass would still be just as
effective.

This is a PITA when you have to upgrade multiple jails hosts, I had to apply
the patch in order to continue with our upgrades.
This should be prioritized as it's affecting multiple users.

Bug ID: 236473
Summary: [FUSE] fsync never syncs metadata on fuse(4)
Product: Base System
Version: CURRENT
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Many People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: asomers@FreeBSD.org
The FUSE_FSYNC operations has a flags parameter. If bit 0 is set, then the
filesystem should do an "fdatasync" instead of "fsync". Oddly, FreeBSD's
fuse(4) driver _always_ sets that bit. I suspect that the original GSoC
student didn't understand what it meant. The consequence is that an fsync(=
2)
will not safely sync a file's metadata to disk, if that file is on fuse.

Bug ID: 236474
Summary: [FUSE] fsync returns asynchronously on fuse(4)
Product: Base System
Version: CURRENT
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Many People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: asomers@FreeBSD.org
fuse_internal_fsync() returns immediately after sending the FUSE_FSYNC mess=
age
to the filesystem daemon. It doesn't wait for a response. That kind of
defeats the whole point of fsync. Also, it ignores any errors that the dae=
mon
might return.

I will look into this report.
The lack-of-handling with regards to the BAD_USER message is indeed entirel=
y my
fault. I have some not-ready-for commit code that handles these messages
either by treating the found username as "known to be bad" and immediately
blacklists the remote address. The missing code is where the bad username
isn't on the list and needs to be treated like a regular failed login attem=
pt.

>From inspection I can see that vdev_file_io_start provides invalid options =
to
VOP_FSYNC. The only valid options are MNT_WAIT, MNT_NOWAIT, and MNT_LAZY, =
but
that function uses FSYNC | FDSYNC. This bug has been present ever since the
first import of ZFS.
