The caveat that I have are dynamic IP addresses (server (I have DDNS) + clients (roadwarriors; mobile, tablet, etc)). How should one configure the if_ipsec interface? The Strongswan part is relatively straightforward as it takes variables that indicate "%any". I found some guides for road warriors with Ubuntu VTI;, they configure it as such: * ip tunnel add ipsec0 local 192.168.0.1 remote 0.0.0.0 mode vti key 42 * Reference: https://wiki.strongswan.org/projects/strongswan/wiki/RouteBasedVPN So the first address I assume is the left side of the external header (so NAT-T is needed) and the remote is a match all policy for the right side. Can this be copy pasted on FreeBSD? In other words, is the Ubuntu command equivalent to "ifconfig ipsec0 inet tunnel 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0" for FreeBSD? The if_ipsec of FreeBSD also takes the inet configuration, which is if I'm correct the internal headers of the packets. This is where Ubuntu has to add a static route, although for FreeBSD this would be set up automatically as we define this on our ipsec0 interface. Thanks for shining some light on this! We use if_ipsec(4) with Strongswan between offices. But our configuration is specific. All if_ipsec(4) interfaces are preconfigured via rc.conf. I.e. all interfaces has configured IP addresses and tunnel endpoints. Strongswan is used to install security associations. I think you need to write updown script that will create corresponding if_ipsec(4) interface on demand and configure it, i.e. set tunnel addresses and some internal if needed. Note, you need to use the same reqid for if_ipsec(4) and for "conn" option. --=20 WBR, Andrey V. To reproduce it one needs to send a non negligible amount of traffic towards the system under test so I cannot provide the exact script but I hope my instructions are clear and I=E2=80=99m happy to provide as much details as = I can. To reproduce a problem configure the system in the following way: ifconfig ue0 up # Or any other ethernet interface that you have in the syst= em ifconfig bridge0 create ifconfig bridge0 addm ue0 ifconfig bridge0 inet 192.168.0.111/24 vhid 1 advskew 100 pass mekmitasdigo= at pkg install iperf3 iperf3 -s >From some other machine send traffic towards system under test: iperf3 -c 192.168.0.111 -u -t 120 -Z -b 100m=20 In all of my tests this resulted in immediate (within 2 seconds) lockup of = the network stack on the target system. Excluding bridge interface from the pic= ture and configuring CARP directly on top of ue0 (also tested with rl0) eliminat= es the problem. I will try to look more into this problem but I'm not familiar with locking= in the kernel. Are there any documents/exmaples/kernel options which can help = find where deadlock happens? Also, https://reviews.freebsd.org/D3133 had no attention for over a year. I= 've not yet tried your setup, but I'm confident it'll also work. I think I understand the problem in general terms (but I need to look at details for the full story). Basically, carp and bridge deadlock against ea= ch other because carp calls into bridge which calls into carp (or vice versa). I believe the patch in D3133 is not correct. (See also ae@'s comment there.= ) It removes locking protection where it should be present, and this is what see= ms to fix the problem. This issue is still on my todo list, but I can't promise when I'll get the = time to look into it. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Tue Apr 30 14:45:44 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6F5215940A8 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F8AE75408 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 4144D15940A6; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:43 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: net@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F01115940A5 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D433F75404 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 283D88BA2 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id x3UEjgGF097453 for ; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:42 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from bugzilla@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x3UEjgqb097452 for net@FreeBSD.org; Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:42 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: bugzilla set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: net@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 195191] rtadvd(8): Retry on NET_RT_IFLIST sysctl failure like getifaddrs Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2019 14:45:40 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: needs-qa X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: commit-hook@freebsd.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: net@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: mfc-stable11? mfc-stable12? The kernel syncache code calls syncache_respond just before syncache_insert. If the ACK to the syncache_respond is processed in another thread it may run before the syncache_insert and won't find the entry. Note that this affects only t4_tom because it's the only driver trying to insert and expand syncache entries from different threads. - Do not leak resources if an embryonic connection terminates at SYN_RCVD because of L2 lookup failures. - Retire lctx->synq and associated code because there is never a need to walk the list of embryonic connections associated with a listener. The per-tid state is still called a synq entry in the driver even though the synq itself is now gone. Yes, and the point is to make it not use them *ever*, no matter what the MTU is. 9k clusters are Bad News; given the choice I would just as soon rip out all the code for greater-than-page-size clusters, but that would be way more divergence-from-upstream in my source tree than I can reasonably manage. -GAWollman From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Fri May 3 20:14:33 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E1DC1599AE2 for ; Fri, 3 May 2019 20:14:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) Received: from kib.kiev.ua (kib.kiev.ua [IPv6:2001:470:d5e7:1::1]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A478886D14 for ; Fri, 3 May 2019 20:14:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) Received: from tom.home (kib@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by kib.kiev.ua (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTPS id x43KEJkn015982 (version=TLSv1.3 cipher=TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 3 May 2019 23:14:22 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) DKIM-Filter: OpenDKIM Filter v2.10.3 kib.kiev.ua x43KEJkn015982 Received: (from kostik@localhost) by tom.home (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x43KEJ1w015980; Fri, 3 May 2019 23:14:19 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) X-Authentication-Warning: tom.home: kostik set sender to kostikbel@gmail.com using -f Date: Fri, 3 May 2019 23:14:19 +0300 From: Konstantin Belousov To: Garrett Wollman Cc: freebsd-net@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Disabling 9k jumbo clusters on mce(4) Message-ID: <20190503201419.GC2716@kib.kiev.ua> References: <23756.29338.729453.227593@khavrinen.csail.mit.edu> <20190503174715.GB2716@kib.kiev.ua> <23756.39015.553779.526064@khavrinen.csail.mit.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <23756.39015.553779.526064@khavrinen.csail.mit.edu> User-Agent: Mutt/1.11.4 (2019-03-13) X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.0 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,BAYES_00, DKIM_ADSP_CUSTOM_MED,FORGED_GMAIL_RCVD,FREEMAIL_FROM, NML_ADSP_CUSTOM_MED autolearn=no autolearn_force=no version=3.4.2 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.4.2 (2018-09-13) on tom.home X-BeenThere: freebsd-net@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 May 2019 20:14:33 -0000 On Fri, May 03, 2019 at 03:37:11PM -0400, Garrett Wollman wrote: > < said: > > > On Fri, May 03, 2019 at 12:55:54PM -0400, Garrett Wollman wrote: > >> Does anyone have an easy patch to keep mce(4) from trying to use 9k > >> jumbo mbuf clusters? In fact I was wrong, I forgot that code, sorry. It does not use clusters at all, instead the revision I mentioned loads a chain of mbufs of the MCLBYTES size for receive. Jumbo size only defines the number of mbufs. The stats suggest to me that you've fragmented the mbuf cluster memory pool. 9K mbuf clusters are known to be a serious problem, see this recent post: http://docs.FreeBSD.org/cgi/mid.cgi?23756.39015.553779.526064 Some net interfaces have a setting that tells them to not use 9K mbuf clust= ers even if the interface is using 9K jumbo packets. If that exists for this net driver, I'd suggest you try it. For some reason, the stats show large numbers of both 9K and 4K mbuf cluste= rs. (The 4K mbuf clusters aren't nearly as bad w.r.t. fragmentation, but mixing them with the 9K ones seems likely to cause fragmentation.) Alternately, I'd suggest you turn of jumbo packets and try it with ordinary 1500 byte ethernet packets.
